Nice of Mike to send this along. I haven't seen any new videos from Mike in a while. Has he quit the business? 73 from K9POW in eastern Tennessee.

LOL. You found my magnetic test lead adapter. Still have my black one but noticed the red one grew feet. Looks like it was a hitchhiker. :) I have more of them. Feel free to keep it. So you know what its for, one side just slips on the end of a normal test lead tip and then you can just use the magnetic end and stick it on the chassis. Makes a convient way to hook up to chassis ground.

I have been watching your videos over the past week and I am super impressed with the quality of your repairs. I am an amateur radio operator and have been in radio repair for a short time as a young man, The care and skill you provide is just astounding. I may send some of my boat anchors to you, I wish I wasn't so broke I would send them all to you!!!N5FJK

Be VERY careful with using epoxy on that choke! In the 1980s, when I was a radio/tv engineer for KUAT, a choke (wound on a foot long, 3 in diameter, phenolic tube), in the output of the 50 kW AM (1550 kHz) xmttr got "roasted," I tried to repair it. I removed the darkened surface and applied a thin coating of "corona dope." A few days later, the choke burned up. I think it was due to the phenomenon of "dielectric conduction." Many materials, which are very good insulators for DC, conduct at RF. It's also the way capacitors work. I think epoxy may be a material that behaves that way

The B&K VTVM looks very similar to an RCA Senior. Nice Yaesu cabinet that Mike sent you. You don't know of a good matching green paint for the Yaesu? 👍

Buddy, I know you will be glad to change out the white "chicken head" knob. Lol! That sticks out like a sore thumb! I've had a 101E and 101EE, and still have my 2100B linear amp. Nice radios. 73...Dan w4mnc

Thought you would like the meter. Have several of them and thought I would share the B&K wealth. That was actually one of my daily drivers for several years. Hope it is as reliable for you as it was for me.

That BK sure looks like the old RCA Senior VoltOhmyst I used to have...having at least one analog meter on the bench is always useful (hard to see a swing on a DMM!). BTW, AO7 is still alive and kicking up there! 73 - Dino KL0S

I love an analog meter. And this 177 will fit right in. Love the big scale on it. Been a year since I have been on AO-7. Had a regular sked on it for quite some time. There were a few operators I chatted with a lot on there. Fun times and using the 736 made it easy.

Does that coil have HV across it in operation? I generally don't mess with RF coils unless they are open or damaged.
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 8 жыл бұрын
Around 800 volts. And is why it has to be replaced. As burnt as it is will change the inductance quite a bit. Will not be long before it catches on fire or becomes a straight conductor. This is what happens to RF chokes when the tubes are constantly on and turning cherry red.

If it is in fairly good shape and the price is right I say get it. Probes are not a problem. Find them on ebay all the time and very easy to roll your on. Not difficult at all.

I have a dumb question for you...when using coax/BNCs and such with your scopes, sig gens, and other test equipment, do you use 50 or 75 ohm material?
@TheRadioShop
@TheRadioShop 8 жыл бұрын
Hi Philip. Not a dumb question at all. I actually use both. 50 and 75 ohm cables. Depending on what I am doing at the moment.

Much appreciated. My poor old FTDX-560 is an eBay find too. The good tubes had been removed. The sideband carrier oscillator crystals were both gone. The 100kHz oscillator crystal was gone. I had Quartzlab make me new ones. They made 2 of X-301, the 100kHz oscillator crystal for some reason so I have an extra. I recently rebuilt the power supply board with higher wattage resistors and higher voltage diodes. I'm still going to switch the HV transformer tap over to a good bit lower voltage to save the sweep tubes. I'm pretty much following your lead on the rebuild even though it's a different radio (sort of).I'll fix the PSU first then start working my way through it section by section. Hayseed Hamfest made me a real nice set of HV electrolytics cans. They don't look original but they'll work and I don't have to try to stuff caps in the already crowded power supply bay. The radio had ben scavenged a little. I'm missing one parasitic suppressor but I'm a long way from needing that. I'll be happy if it will learn to talk again 73 NE5U Mike

Sounds like it is in good hands Mike. You follow it just like you said and all will be fine. One stage at a time. Good deal on the HH capacitors. Cannot go wrong with them. Sure they cost a little more but many miles will be added to the outcome. Keep us updated on it and thanks for sharing.
