I owned one of these in South Africa. Ended up using it on an episode of Come Dine With Me. Genuinely cool vans. Sadly deeply underpowered with the 2l air-cooled engine and getting parts was a lesson in patience and hard work....at least in South Africa.

I bought myself an earlier model, 1973. The cab over models came out in 1975 ish, in 2012 I paid next to nothing for it back then. It had a bit of rust on the dog legs and nose which I repaired. I sold it for peanuts in comparison to what they are going for now. Glad to see this one is getting a second life in the UK. The article is, as someone mentioned somewhere in the comments, in Afrikaans. Looks like a lot of retro fitting went on in this Autovilla as the interior looks nothing like an original except for the wood veneer. Oh yes, and mine was super rare with an automatic gearbox! I've had people hounding me for ages looking for an auto box since I sold it.

I love Brian .. betta come out ..Brain even has eye lids .. love it My old Datson Homer van also had a front vent (that let in the rain)

The news article is in Afrikaans, not German. The Autovilla was made in South Africa by the Jurgens company. I own one(older model) that's still in its original condition.

The coolest vehicle ever made!!. I really wish I could see this accelerating from a stand still. Is it a LOT slower then the Westfalia campers that are stock?. Can this move without overheating on the long haul?. How does it handle and corner?. I would love to see a road test. What an amazing VW fantasy!.

I am the owners brother, and have spent many hours in Brian. Its a twin carb with electronic points conversion. It motors very welland is no slouch. Sits happily at 60mph on the A roads. We’ve had 5 people round the rear table drinking and eating all night on a few occasions. As for handling, lets just say he doesnt slow down for corners…I normally follow behind in my T5, and am always surprised by the speed it keeps up.

These vans are the "Original" motorhomes of Southern Africa. Even today people in South Africa and Namibia use the word "Autovilla" when referring to any motorhome.
