Traveling the world to get pampered, this was my first street barber shave experience. Mr. Udin, a Yogyakarta local, is 52 years old, and has been a barber for 17 years. Today, I only ordered a shave, since I didn't need a haircut. He used an old style safe-T shaver, instead of a straight razor.
Central Java is one of my favorite places to travel in the whole world. The lush jungles, active volcanoes, amazing food, and the beautiful people, all make it a great stay each time.
Yogyakarta, the arts and cultural capitol of Java, is a great place to begin your travel of Central Java.

I have worked on a cruise ship with many Indonesians. After a hard day of work, some of the crew set up their own barbershop somewhere in the ship to make some extra bucks. Really friendly and hard working people.

its a bit expensive for only shaving, if you cut hair its normal price but only shaving its normaly cost 5 thousand rupiah especially in yogya (yogya has a lower price than Jakarta so if you cut your hair 15 thousand rupiah in yogya you can get it like 10 thousand rupiah) but maybe its bule price and he didn't really overprice you like 20 thousand or something, i just want to tell you that you can get lower price if you cut your hair in street barbershop. I learned to shave with one of those old razors. Every day when grandpa got home from work he would have a shower and then come out and get me. I was around 3 when he started and he would have me take off my shirt and would stand me on a stool next to the sink. After he made the lather he would brush it on our faces and give me my razor ( Without blade) and he would grab his and I would mimic his motions as we shaved. Thanks for bringing back some memories with this video.

As Jason says, it's the "experience". It may not be the best ever shave, but it's cheap and you have an authentic encounter with great local folk. And in spite of any shave-related shortcomings Jason looked great afterwards.

I went to live to Mexico almost twenty years ago. It was the opposite. I was born in Los Angeles ( Chicano ), raised part of my childhood here and raised a few years out there. I went to their schools and I experienced a lifestyle that although I didn't appreciate at the time as a kid a few years ago I've come to appreciate the memory given how we live out here in the States.
