Wow, I will be 200 in 2171 as well! Personally, I plan on being cryogenically frozen to await the time when I can be revived and given a cybernetically enhanced body. Great backstory, I used to think the Kelvin was a small cramped ship with 800 crewmembers onboard before seeing a scale reference that she was much bigger than originally thought. Made me wonder how Starfleet got such a ship that scale before the Constitution class. This story makes sense given it was a deep space vessel but before dubtronicas to greatly advance space exploration and ship design.

Excellent video. In the prime timeline, specifically TNG all good things wasn't there a class with a globe mounted at the front that appeared to be a spiritual descendant of the Daedalus class? That would be an interesting one to follow up with. I want to say it was the Pasture class but that's a complete guess

I had always pictured this class doing five year missions. I had actually submitted an idea back in the day and in my notes, I even came up with a biography for Captain robau that mentioned several five year missions for the Kelvin. Glad someone else had the idea too. Love it.

What I really like about your videos is that you are one of a very few who keeps Starfleet the Federation seperate, which is as it is, Starfleet is a different organisation but is the primary one used by the Federation as you know, but also Starfleet is a human organisation first and then later as it became the coalition of planets and then I assume the Federation Starfleet vessels would have mixed crews, forgive me I am already telling you what you know, I feel as though I am babbling, but sufficed to say you are one of the top Trek channels I love to watch. What bothered me about the Kelvin was the 0 on the registry as hough to make it a four digit registry UNLESS there was a ship with the registry NCC 514 already, but still it really makes no sense to have one with an added 0 in front of it, but then again its the Kelvin verse. I wonder if there is a production reason why they decided to plonk a zero at the start of the numbers...

Taking a guess here…but considering the designs seen of a very similar pair of ships from beta canon sources (aside from the single frames in early film monitors) those being the akula/Apollo classes…which were basically the same, except with the traditional two nacelles, mounted vertically Conceivably, with the upgrade and revolution of duotronics etc meaning the secondary hull on the top side was then no longer need, replacing it with a nacelle rendered it sufficiently different to warrant reference of a new class name?

I'm curious sir what you could come up with regarding Starfleet Academy. In both Alpha and Beta canon so many ships are lost due not to ship limitations but crew failure which I'm sure would lead to an overhaul of training programs. In your recent Constitution vids you pointed out how the Enterprise survived situations that destroyed other ships of the class. This could of been what lead Spock to become an instructor and Checkov to becoming Comandante.

TriAngulum, Your Beta Cannon, 'bits of star dust' are more informative, and creative, than most Alpha Cannon sources... and far more entertaining. Enough so, that I check this site every few days for more, after my initial bumping into the site during a random search on Star Trek ships and lore. I too want to see the Olympic Class given this kind of attention. I also would like to see another class given a short overview as well... from the same episode where we see the USS Pasteur, there was a three nacelle version of the Galaxy Class, captained by a rather frazzled William Riker. What could have caused Star Fleet to go full up military? So much so that that particular 'Enterprise' would have over 3,000 Marines aboard?

I wasn't a huge fan of the JJ Trek movies and I'm saddened that most the new Trek seems to be based on it these days. That said the new JJ movies did do a few things right. The first was the USS Kelvin and its casual but great updated design. Its one of the best designs of the three movies and its very 'Prime Universe' in its appearance. That design isn't new to the Star Trek universe, but I think the update for that movie was pretty good and added a lot of details. I'm also a fan of the uniform updates, their basic gear, and the USS Franklin -an obvious nod to the NX class. I always enjoyed the Daedalus Class and while I liked the NX class (upside down Akira or not) I feel like a modern take on the Daedalus would've been great for Star Trek: Enterprise. I haven't heard of it being called an Einstein Class ship before, but I like it. That hull design did have a Kirk Era designation that escapes me -but it could be a different class and not a refit. Overall, this was a good video and I will watch the others. :)

i always wondered why instead of decommissioning ships like this, they didn't "fix them up" and use them as secondary support ships and maybe system defense ships. you dont need warp 8 to make phasers and photon torpedoes go should some creepy aliens decide to do bad things to you, and your "connies" are out on a mission 6 months or more away at high warp.

Maybe in the earlier days of the Federation and before mass industrial replicators they needed to recycle a lot of the old ships for raw materials. It would serve as a good excuse as why we don't see these new old designs in the shows that came "after" them.

Always love your videos and presentation. Your fan fiction is very enjoyable fillings to the gaps to the canon property. The only thing I would change would be that Starfleet wouldn't choose between designs based on their looks (e.g. clunky vs beautiful) but would choose based on function and capability. There would be plenty of ways make up why the dish was chosen over the ball. Keep up the great work!

Im sorry, but then you dont understand humanity very well.... Why do cars get sleeker and more advanced looks as time goes on? Why can the same be said about airplanes and boats? After all, a box on wheels with an engine system would work just fine? Or a cone with wings would work just fine for flight... Humanity is a mixture of vanity and functionality, thats why Trek starships look as they do, as the designers understand that concept. And I too understand it, which is why I stand behind the fact that they WOULD choose designs not on function alone, but on the look as well... And canon, through ALL the starship designs we've seen, supports this! Take care!

I suppose I look at the Starfleet ships from a more military view than a cruise ship view but I appreciate your take on Starfleet approaching it from that angle. Aircraft are also designed based on capability (on the outside for sure) while the inside is a mix between form and function (passenger aircraft at least). Thing is, a sphere is a superior design to a saucer. It has _a lot more_ internal space with smaller external dimensions at the widest point, and is more robust and better armoured for the mass used.

Im sorry but that is kind of a myth... For example,With the Daedalus Class, some people make that volume excuse saying that it would have more internal volume then the saucer of the 1701 and thus would make a great hospital ship... BUT if you do the math for the spheres size, you'd quickly discover that the internal volume of the sphere is MUCH smaller then the internal volume of the saucer of the Enterprise 1701. Like all things in life, it would just depend on the size of the sphere, so in order to be a true statement, the sphere would have to be quite a bit larger then the one we see on the Daedalus. So in the case of Starfleet Spheres, you are incorrect that they are superior!

You are correct, however, as it says in my video introduction "this story does not take place in the Kelvin Universe, but rather this is the classes history from the Prime Universe." Meaning the events that happened in the Kelvin Timeline have no bearing on this video! Hope that clears it up for you :)

Hmm not too sure how I feel about the idea of Starfleet choosing a saucer based starship design based on aesthetic preference or the desire to make a visual statement. That's definitely why I'd pick it hehe. But in engineering, form follows function. So I'd tend to think that Starfleet would have more practical and technical criteria and the saucer simply best suited their needs. It's a nice middle ground between the arrowhead and the sphere. The sphere has the most internal volume that can be used for decks and equipment. But it presents a large forward profile that obstructs the warp nacelles and deflector dish. Both are reduced in their effectiveness as a result. The bussard collectors can't gather as much interstellar gas and the deflector has a larger area that it needs to deflect space debris away from. The arrowhead on the other hand is exactly the opposite. It presents a very narrow forward profile that makes the job of the deflector and nacelles much easier. But it has very limited internal volume. This might not be as much of a problem for a more combat oriented vessel. But Starfleet's ships were never meant to be just military vessels. Defense of the Federation and it's worlds was of course an important part of their mission. But their primary functions were scientific, exploratory, and diplomatic. All things that required their own dedicated space and equipment. The saucer, having more internal volume than the arrowhead and a smaller forward profile than the sphere, proved to be the best of both worlds. It fit Starfleet's design criteria perfectly. Or at least that's how I imagine it. Other than that though I really like the lore you've come up with. Really makes the Einstein class feel like it makes sense and belongs in Starfleet's lineage of ships. I never thought much about how different the technology from the four founding Federation species would be and just how much effort and extra equipment would be needed just to make it all play nice together. Keep up the good imagining hehe.

Except that canon, and real life science tells us otherwise... First we know there were "ball" shaped primary hulls like the Daedalus and Olympic Classes. There are also plenty of arrowhead designs like the Intrepid, Nova Classes etc. There are also many Square designs, the Huron, Antares and other cargo vessels etc. And based on the stats given for each of these design in Star Trek, there is no difference in Engineering performance! And so, with no difference, by process of elimination or as Spock would say, "when you eliminate all other possibilities, whatever remains, must be the truth," so it was simply an aesthetic choice! Second, real life science tells us there is no difference to account for hull shape in space, again pointing to aesthetics... So you may not like it, but it's the only thing that makes sense and actually fits with how humanity operates, making visually pleasing items, rather then just functional ones!

As you say they do have a variety of others that they've used over the centuries. I just meant that it must meet their needs very well since the majority of Starfleet ships are designed that way. And while I'd definitely agree that the saucer design is appealing I would argue that there must be some practical in universe reason for it as well. The form that a tool takes must serve the function it was designed for first and look good second if at all. And spacecraft are no different. The shape of spacecraft even in the real world is important for a variety of reasons. Aerodynamics just usually isn't among them. The James Webb space telescope and Parker Solar Probe are designed with specific shapes that shield their sensitive equipment from the sun. The International Space Station looks the way it does because it had to be assembled from pieces that could fit in the space shuttle. Habitable sections on spacecraft are usually round because round shapes are better at holding pressure. It's far from arbitrary. For Starfleet ships there could be any number of technical reasons why the saucer design is so prominent. Maybe it makes them easier to refit since you can just slide individual sections out of the saucer and swap them out with others. Maybe it's to limit the total number of decks in the primary hull so that crew members don't have to climb as many ladders when the turbolifts don't work. Maybe the saucer shape helps the sensor systems since it's basically a giant dish. I could come up with any number of possible reasons for it. And maybe I am wrong about it being a compromise between arrowhead and sphere designs. But I don't think it's unreasonable to guess that the thin saucer might be an efficient shape to maximize the internal volume of the ship and minimize the hazards of warp travel. The vacuum of space is incredibly diffuse. It's almost completely empty. But not entirely. If it was completely empty then ships in Star Trek wouldn't need deflectors and navigational shields. There must be stuff out there that they need to push out of the way in order to make sure that it doesn't hit the front of the ship at warp speed. So it doesn't seem unreasonable that having a smaller forward profile of the ship would make the job of the deflector and navigational shields easier. A smaller surface that can be hit by space debris means a smaller area in front of the ship that those devices have to keep clear.

One other thing: was the Kelvin really that big? 800 crew complement is double the size of the Constitution class, isn't it? I always thought the Kelvin was a smaller ship than the big E, not the other way around...

Well to replace it's circuitry with duotronic systems would require a MAJOR refit, not a minor one... Think of it this way... What you're asking is couldnt you just add a new computer chip to a Commodore 64 and make it a Pentium 3 Computer? The answer is no, you'd have to replace every component in the computer to do so!

Good analysis but the problem with your analysis is it contradicts with the deflector dish and interior of the ship. I never thought of the nacelle as a nacelle but rather a big massive engine that could replace nacelles on starships. I was thinking that most Starfleet ship designs was still like the NX class by 2335 and that the so called Einstein class and one other starship class were supposed to carry Starfleet/UFP into the future but then Starfleet captured a bunch of adrift 20th century Romulan birds of prey and use the technology from those ships to construct the smaller constitution class, giving Starfleet the perfect starship class to have a more scifi retro feel so that the starship class could look like a ship of peace but ready for battle at a moment’s notice, Starfleet integrated some NX class tech into the constitution class but you can only see that behind the scenes. Starfleet also created hybrid starship classes that are a combination of the Einstein class technology and the 20th century Romulan technology, I would have the ares from Axannar as an example of that hybrid starship class design. The Einstein class with being a starship class with no nacelle and instead have a big massive engine that looks like a nacelle be reduced to a colony ship and retired in 2270. As with Discovery and SNW supposedly set in the prime timeline which doesn’t make sense, well I would have that be a separate timeline where Starfleet didn’t capture the 20th century Romulan birds of prey until 2260’s, so starfleet not capturing the birds of prey in 2335 created the discovery/snw timeline and it is appropriate to have the discovery 31st century be part of the discovery/snw timeline. The only thing that I would have the prime timeline and the discovery/snw timeline share is the style of the TNG uniforms. As with St: Picard, I would say is 23rd century technology and 31st century technology found its way to the prime timeline in 2380 and that created a turn of events that wiped out the Star Trek Countdown future where Data is captain of the Ent-E, how did that technology from the discovery/snw timeline made its way to the prime timeline in 2380, well you would have to create a storyline with that. The creation of the Kelvin timeline is self explanatory. Also, I’ll have the 22nd century Romulan birds of prey continue to be labeled that but label the 23rd century Romulan birds of prey as 20th century Romulan birds of prey instead, the Earth-Romulan War forced the Romulans to bring back the 20th century Romulan birds of prey due to shortage of ships during the war and several were lost and later captured by Starfleet to then be used to construct the constitution class, and other starship classes and starbases. The Romulans continued to use the 20th century Romulan birds of prey until 2274 when it was replaced by new Romulan starship designs or a refitted version that you see in St: Picard.

Jim, there is NOTHING in the story which contradicts ANYTHING in canon. What you've done here is create your own head canon and are trying to play it off as canon, even though your story completely contradicts whats already been established IN canon... IE DSC and SNW takes place in the Prime Timeline. You may not like it, but that has been told to fandom and thus blows your story out of the water... You're welcome to have your own head canon, we all are, but what you're not welcome to do is make up facts in a silly attempt to put someone elses work down. Thats why you're the ONLY person to make this outlandish claim, because it's simply that, outlandish! Cya
