@@michaelmorris589 many many episodes of TNG were spent talking about feelings. In fact the majority. You're allowed to move on from TNG. Not all Star Trek has to be a remake of TNG. Change is okay. New things are okay. You don't have to eat the same thing for every meal your entire life. I love TOS, TNG DS9 Voyager Enterprise, but the writing and acting were hokey and unnatural by design. And filled with plot contrivances and conveniences that don't make sense. We don't have to emulate that forever.

It was done in the era of 30 Something, Moonlighting, Murphy Brown, various Lawyers in Love shows so the writers used many of those contemporary tropes. If you watch mid 60s popular: 12 O'clock High, The Big Valley and Daniel Boone...you'll see a lot of similar writing and character interplay with Star Trek 1966-69... You'll also here the not so original music on Star Trek....including the opening fanfare theme.

I'll just say this: I'm 45 and one of the first projected fi[ms I saw was The Wrath of Khan. I was hooked, immediately. I have since consumed all things Trek, literally (and not the way my daughters use the word). Over the years, Star Trek has brought me JOY! Good or bad, it's always been joy, and that seals the deal for me. I'll eat this up with a spoon, and I will throw money at every version, again and again, because I am, at heart, a realist and a scientist at heart. Growing up on a rural, non-light polluted 165 acre cattle farm looking at constellations with your dad, eagerly awaiting the next VHS rental of Carl Sagan's "Cosmos"...you just can't beat that, folks. It's Trek...bring it on.

Being one of the persons that watched the pilot many centuries ago (yea, I am old) I sat there with my father. He passed away 2 years ago but there are many fond memories. As a child & teenager we watched Star Trek, Buck Rodgers, Battle Star Galactica (both versions) & many other series over the past 5 decades. To watch The Cage & The Menagerie with my father places it in a special place for me. That started my adventures into Sci-fi. Well, I was propped up on pillows from what my dad told me. I was only 2 I think. I would have to look up when it actually aired. '65 I believe. Even my mom says I would stare at the console until the show was over.

Aside from my being the 1981 model-year, pretty much the same story here. Itty bitty me watching TOS with my pa, too young to understand why the "green guy" had pointed ears, but glued to that screen all the same. Then came TNG, and my pa was one of those "not my captain" people up until season 2. At that point, he was finally willing to accept Picard and the gang as "part of our religion" (a joke about the fans who declare their fandom is like a religious experience). Our "religion" also included a healthy Star Wars obsession, Reeves' Superman, Red Dwarf, all built on a solid foundation of Doctor Who (classics, of course).

One thing I think they really got right in addition to the structural design is the lighting. It's just so warm and it all blooms without the need for lens flare. It's just cozy and happy. I love it.

I disagree, what made star trek "cozy" was the carpet. The shiny floors and reflective screens and spot lights everywhere is just bad. They have to go back to what made us all fans, get the focus off the environment and let us focus on the actors/charactors. For some reason they LOVE reflections and glossyness in the new star trek shows. It was not like that before. One thing I did notice is they got rid of the sparks everywhere in battles now its replaced by flickering screens and fog machines.

J.J. Abrams’ over usage of lens flares, became his “signature” (not in a good way). Lighting is tricky (I did theatre lighting in college and for professional shows in 1970s), especially when TOS lighting varied with new usage of color in TV (1960s).

@@cranbers I thought both of the first two episodes were incredibly character focused. I mean they spend about 10 minutes in Pike’s quarters getting to know Uhura alone. Discovery was terrible at it because I still don’t know everybody’s name but on a strange New World I already know all the characters names and more about them than I ever did on Discovery. So I think they’re moving in the right direction.

If you compare TNG to strange new worlds, that is what were used to and allowed you to focus on the characters instead of the distractions that is the sets, all those glossy floors and reflective surfaces. And a fireplace? Seems like a waste of oxygen on a star ship so very strange.

My stance on this new Enterprise is this: Given all that we have come to know about in-universe starship design since the 1960's, this version makes a lot more design sense. Her design language is closer to the NX-01, which is a nice bridge between eras, and also makes her later 2270 refit make more sense as well. It's a modern take on an iconic design. I love it.

It was Neelix on Star Trek:Voyager who turned Captain Janeway's Private Captains dining hall into a mess hall for the crew and it stayed that way all the way through Voyager's journey through the Delta Quadrant.

First, let me say Pike's Enterprise looked a lot more spiffier that Kirk's in TOS. (Of course, they didn't have the budget back then.) Also, Pike's Enterprise has a larger crew complement than Kirk's. In the 2009 reboot, the number was said to be between 700 and 800. I doubt we will get to see the Enterprise under Kirk's command, since this series is ten years before the 'Holy Trinity.' So far, I'm loving the series!

The Kelvin timeline Enterprise was MASSIVE. Based on scaling of the shuttlebay, it was about the dive of the Enterprise D. Of course, this could just be because JJ Abrams has shown to have difficulty with distances and sizes.

The Kelvin time line of the movies has a very scaled up Enterprise. All the ships are bigger in the movies. This being in the Prime timeline you have to go with the info in the tv shows. When Kirk is in charge the Enterprise has 438 crew members on it, iirc. Right now when Pike is in charge that number is around 200. I think by Kirks time they felt more comfortable taking more people out into deep space so he has a larger crew. They could also have added different scientific teams then which aren't on Pikes crew.

The thing is, it's not like the Enterprise (original 1701) hasn't been retrofit multiple times! Come the movies, the hallways became narrow and more submarine-like than the more expansive halls seen in the Original Series. I've really enjoyed Strange New Worlds so far, and I can't wait to see more of this legendary Vessel - hopefully, it can get more seasons than the original did!

Very true. Plus, under Kirk the crew size of the enterprise doubled, so it’s likely that the ship would have had a big interior refit where extra rooms like lounges were converted to more crew quarters and perhaps more science labs and work stations.

Even within SNW, the scaling is really inconsistent; just look at the size of the room Uhura and Hemmer were trapped in when fighting the Gorn in S1… yet the scale of the windows would imply a much smaller ship. I honestly wish they’d just ignored Discovery and said it’s the same size as TOS, it wouldn’t really affect anything in the show. For me, the Enterprise is and always will be 289 meters for the original and 305 meters for the refit, and if SNW says otherwise I will simply ignore it because it is wrong lol.

The walk area behind/around the transporter could be for when a large number of people need to be beamed up or down in an emergency. For instance: Without it, people on the back pads would need to cross over the front transporter pads to get off of it, whereas in an emergency where you are beaming up as many people as possible, people can just hop straight off the pad they beamed up on and then have a convenient corridor for them to get out of the way while the next group is being beamed up. Whether we'll ever see it used or if it's just a fun little design thing, who knows.

@@jkbughunt If you want to play the canon game, site-to-site wasn't common until TNG and later. Scotty used it all of once in TOS, suggesting it's not exactly a common-place ability pre-TOS, so extra space around the transporter pads would be useful until site-to-site becomes more common. But let's be real here, this is all speculation around a small design decision. Do you really think a corridor surrounding the transporter pad is a huge problem? No. It's a detail that may have no impact at all.

In 1968 (I think) a book companion to the TV series was published which lots of useful information that seems to have been changed over the years. One of these was that Federation ships usually are made up of one specicies from the same planet. The reason Spock was on the Enterprise was because he was half human. Also, food was real food, not synthisised, kept in storage and served seemingly fresh. Wish I still had that book.

IMHO some people are stuck in 20th Century set design that was cheap low budgeted...but worked for its time on early tv...to be relevant in the eyes of the 21st century audience Star Trek had to evolve as tv evolved over the years...that's why changes happen....even the ship has been jacked up in looks and style from the 1960s...it's STILL that starship Pike commands now and Kirk gets years from now...it's all good...no need to adhere to primitive standards of old television....LLAP!!🙂

If by some chance that this ship design does become a reality, then we as a people and a society have to give our future the best chance for the best result. Who always wants to walk backwards? Moving forward and taking it to the next level is our best choice in my opinion. I'm for the first time in years I am excited to see where this is going. That could be the case, I've read that Gene always wanted to use holo tech as far back as TOS but there was no right way to do it at the time. Someone said there's early TOS era Enterprise design diagrams where they've left space for basically mini holodecks. The thinking being that the crew stuff in deep space for 5 years and who never actually leave the ship could go in and relax a bit. Not till TNG did they have the budget to put the idea to use, and also scale it up.

I love the new design of the Constitution Class. It's very functional in many ways and just looks awesome. Some diehard fans of the original Constitution design may complain that it's not "canon" but to me, I love all the Star Treks and fundamentally, all the different designs, layouts, uniforms, technology, etc., etc. encompasses IDIC: Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. If one today were to dramatise the USS "Constitution" frigate bombarding the Tripoli pirates of two centuries past, would it serve to install aboard the CGI model the gunnery of a later period because of the difference in time during production? Another point: I shall distill this to basic maths; the Starship Enterprise of Captain Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) in "The Cage" was approximately 289 metres long. The Starship Enterprise of Captain Pike in this new version is 442.06 metres long. How can one reconcile those? What do we not understand? In the end, fact and logic--savour that word--must have precedence.

@@DavidRLentz I've been watching Star Trek since TOS was all there was. I still love the old show. But you can't make a sci-fi series in the 2020s using 1960s sets. It wouldn't be credible. To be brutally honest, it would look ridiculous. It didn't look ridiculous back then, but it would now. If they had had today's technology back in 1966, TOS would have looked something like this. I think this is a reasonable update that draws upon the 1960s source material but makes it look credible for today's audiences.

In TOS there was a transporter pad just for cargo, in the after section of the saucer for bulk supplies and stores. Tech manual stated in an emergency situation it could handle 24 personnel but at some risk to crew using it.

Robert April was only ever just a name during TOS’s early development. Roddenberry changed the show’s lead’s name to Christopher Pike sometime when working on the pilot, and then another writer decided to use it as the Enterprise’s first captain for an episode of the animated series. Adrian Holmes also plays Uncle Phil on the new Fresh Prince reboot-I’ve heard that show’s not great, but nothing bad about the actors themselves. Not sure why it’s evidently worth derailing a review to imply negative things about someone who’s essentially a guest star.

I agree. It is a much better design then the New Trek movies for honouring the past. Even the bridge controls feel that way, still lots of buttons and "dumb" screens but also a mix of what we have now with touch screens and such. The designers in this show really looked carefully at the original series and pulled out things that they could tweak and update, or just leave as is.

This is the first "modern" version of the original Enterprise I have actually liked. The JJ version from the recent films is downright fugly. This one? It looks credible. The proportions are right. In spirit, it very much honors the TOS Enterprise. If Roddenberry were still around, I think he just might approve of this particular redesign.

I know everyone here has a story about Star Trek TOS as a kid. I just wanted to share mine, as around the time Strange New Worlds was released my grandpa has passed away, I've already watched the show a few times, as well as a majority of all the other media but find myself still searching the Strange New Worlds intro and this was the second result. I already knew he absolutely loved Star Trek, it's what even got me into it in my late teens, as when I was a kid I thought it was kind of boring. Due to some legal issues with wills and stubborn family I only recently was given access to a few of the things my grandpa left behind after he passed and deep at the bottom of a bag of much random odds and ends there was a little wooden Enterprise, carved out of wood with the gaps between the saucer/nacelles/secondary hull painted black so it has held together fairly well..as much as I loved my grandpa he definitely wasn't a craftsman but it's clear he made it with a lot of love and care. I recently propped it on a model stand and have it sat on my desk and aside from a pin hole to attach the stand, I'd never dare modify it in any way. I really wish he got to have seen atleast the intro to Strange New Worlds, I'm sure it would have blown him away seeing the original ship looking so good.

In my mind, this is how the Enterprise has always looked. It's just that back in the 1960s, they didn't have the budget and special effects were as sophisticated as they are today, but they got the job done. This is a beautiful rendition of the Constitution-class Starship and in fact, my all-time favourite picture of my own Starship from Star Trek Online is the Discovery/Strange New Worlds-era Constitution-class U.S.S. Jupiter NCC-1734, with TOS colours.

I like that it actually feels like the size it's depicted. That was always my issued with the older shows when you'd see the interior, the halls were always cramped, the rooms small. With this one, the halls seems massive, the rooms crazy big, like engineering actually seems like the proper size you'd expect it to be in a star ship.

@@OpenMawProductions There's honestly no issue with this having bigger spaces in it. People want to tag some in-universe/canon reason to everything, but the real world reason is that the older shows don't have anywhere near the budget the new shows get. Plus the CGI abilities of today allow for you to digitally expand a set beyond what you've built, like with this version of engineering. If they had this ability back in the TOS time, they'd have done it. Hell in Genes original notes there were ideas for doing the holodeck and holo communication areas back in TOS, pretty sure the old TOS Enterprise design diagrams have "holo spaces" shown in them. It only took until TNG and a bit of a bigger budget for them to finally add that idea in. As far as in-universe, this time period the ship only has around 200 people on it, Later when Kirk takes over that number has doubled to over 400. This is canon, as far as I've read and SNW hasn't said how many people are on it, so doesn't look like they've retcon'd that little bit. It's easy to see how adding more crew and space for other things (for the next 5 year deep space mission), means you have to shrink/re-design the inside to accommodate twice as many people.

The Enterprise in the original series was a major departure from spaceships from previous science fiction shows and movies. All previous ships were the classic ‘rocket ship’ or ‘flying saucer’ in appearance. And here comes this unique shape. Absolutely beautiful. The lens flare was overdone but the Abramsverse Enterprise was lovely, too. Strange New Worlds is a great update of the classic original style given the better detailing 50+ years of modeling and computer graphics permits. As for how the nacelles mount, I can see the cutouts as possibly an improvement in structural integrity while reducing overall mass. The paired pylons might offer better resistance to applied force from the nacelles being used compared to a single, solid mount. If nothing else, they look lovely.

I have been a Trekker since the show was first shown and have loved the all the improvements and upgrades to the ship over the decades. My favorite though is 1701-A. But this beautiful version for Capt. Pike's Enterprise just might sway me to make it my favorite. Its a terrific redo. Of course ALL the upgrades and redo's over the years have a lot to do with budgets and technology. Still, the people responsible for the new looks did a great job.

The cut outs increase the overall strength of the pylon. In the original style, saying bending out word you would have just the edges to strengthen it, 2 edges. By adding the cutouts, there’s an additional 2 edges that increase its rigidity.

Possible In-Universe explaination: Temporal cold war time shift under Capt. Archer's Enterprise NX-01, made April's/Pike's Enterprise more advanced, but tech constraints, duotronic vs. experimental positronic made tech really large and space consuming. Modern day Example: Radio tubes vs. Transistor Circuits. Analog vs. Digital. Tech advances; gets more compact, does more, safer to operate, you don't need to dedicate as much space for it. Thus, why Scotty was so amazed at the size of crew quarters on the Enterprise D. In that sense the larger spaces were not due to tech constraints, but for crew comfort/morale.

The sickbay transporter is a great addition as site-to-site transport wasn't a thing in this era. The process of transporting from one area to another without the use of a transporter pad was considered very risky during Kirk's tenure as Captain, so using it on sick or injured people would probably be frowned upon.

@@connorm200 No it hasn't. We've had movies based on the franchise that were action oriented to appeal to larger audiences, while Discovery has been nothing like trek. Very drama driven, a dearth of moral and scientific quandry, it's nothing like Enterprise, Voyager, TNG, or the TOS. Picard hasn't been good, and is missing the vital elements that made Picard a likable captain, as well as the feeling of optimism and curiosity TNG embodied. I appreciated the movies for what they were, tried to enjoy Discovery, lost interest after a few seasons. When I watched SNW, I cried. Everything that was missing from "Nu Trek" was present in SNW. The episodic format, the scientific quandry, the moral dilemmas, likable characters, and most importantly of all: Spock's brain. SNW is the most Star Trek the series has been since Enterprise.

@@talyn3932 Ratings don't lie, Nu Trek has not fared well. If it's so great and a natural evolution of the series itself, then Strange New Words wouldn't exist in the first place. I didn't dismiss Discovery the moment it aired. I watched two seasons and gave it the college try, like the majority of people, it wasn't for me. The languishing of the next ST movie, the middling ratings of Discovery and Picard, Pine's comments on actually making a show/movie people want to watch is emblematic of that. It's not the fans fault for not "evolving" to meet the vision the show runners have for the show, it's up to the show runners to make something that the fans want to commit their money to, and Strange New Worlds is knocking it out of the park.

Best I could come up with -- and it's a stretch -- is that it's a reference to Will Decker who captained the Enterprise during its pre-TMP refit and was first officer during TMP. He was played by Stephen Collins who turned out to be something of a wrong 'un to put it mildly. I can't imagine it's a direct reference to April himself, who to the best of my knowledge has only ever been played by James Doohan (voice only) and now Adrian Holmes, so if it's not a dig at Collins then I'm stumped. Off the top of my head I can't think of another Trek captain who was played by a "dodgy" actor, but there have been a few over the years (captains, not dodgy actors) so it's possible I've forgotten someone. Maybe Kelsey Grammer depending on your definition of "dodgy", but that's even more of a stretch than Collins. And the Bozeman wasn't the Enterprise.

I'm not sure who is behind this show yet, but it is already leaps and bounds ahead of Discovery. I think the forward lounge is a mix between the old and new. Financial constraints, along with tv technology kept the original trek from having such graphics but I'm sure the lounge is an attempt to combine the future 10 forward with what passed as the lounge in the original series. Can you Imagine the Cheron preaching, or the space hippies playing music in such a room? Kirk and Spock playing 3D Chess? Yep. Somebody in production is ACTUALLY a fan of the original show and it's giving SNW a great start.

All I can say about Pike's Enterprise was pretty much put forth in the TOS pilot and later on, again in "The Menagerie pts. 1 and 2. Spock went mental, Pike disagreed, of course he would, but it ended up well more or less. As far as the Enterprise goes... I wish people would quit messing with it. Yes I know bigger budget and better SX, But leave things be. I actually like the Enterprise how it was not any of these upgrades or re-imaginations.

I'll bet having that crew lounge at the front of the saucer section of the Constitution Class both the original configuration and the 2270's Refit is what gave the designers of the Galaxy Class the idea for 10 forward at the very front of the saucer section of the Galaxy Class Starships like the Galaxy Class U.S.S. The original 6 foot model of the Enterprise D built by ILM did not have the distinctive windows of Ten Forward until the model was refurbished for Generations in 1994. However, the later 4-foot model built by Greg Jein that was used for season 3-onwards did incorporate Ten Forward into it's (much thicker) saucer rim.

I know some people don't like new trek, and think it doesn't fit with established lore. But I heard an interesting theory that due to the temporal war in Enterprise, it spawned a separate timeline. So I personally think that Discovery, and Strange New Worlds are this new timeline outside of Prime or Kelvin. That way you don't have to worry about every time some little thing doesn't match TOS, TNG canon etc, makes it much more enjoyable. Picard is actually the Prims timeline as it mentions events which occurred in TNG and First Contact, and Voyager.

I really hope as the seasons pass it keeps getting changed more towards Kirks Enterprise. Conflicts with the Gorn, and Kligons are on the horizon so removing weak spots like the bridge window, the hole in the nacelle pylons etc can be explained away saying they need to be armored up. This would also make the nacelles more round and less curved like the JJ and the color of the ship could be changed to the original shade too. The screens and computers can be made bulkier to counter some new EMP-type/hacking weapon, and generally make them sturdier for expected prolonged combat. The big quarters now and exposed piping on the OG can be explained by saying the revamped systems simply need more room.

I think the idea is supposed to be that the ship always looked like this and what we saw in TOS represents an imperfect rendering. If they were going for the TOS designs being detail to detail canon, there's already on screen reference for what the Enterprise looked like in Pike's time and it wasn't this. I get that some fans wanted an absolutely faithful TOS design, but it seems clear that's not the aesthetic they are going with.

I'm an 'old-school' Trekkie, and have played SFB for over 45 years. The STOS is ICON. This, while having a few, um, 'inconsistencies' with that, Is FAR Better than the Movies have been. I always believed that STAR TREK ships had untapped, under-written, un-used , unreported even, convergent Tech that Plot-Writers ignored. Here, we see it Deployed, much as we saw firing a weapon at Warp-speed was in 'Enterprise'. This changes things, in the 'Universe', but also the scripting. It also means the Star-Wars fanboys need to FEAR fights at Warp-Speed, and Transporters! Sub-light battles are akin to a Dog-fight to an F-22 pilot; Taking the Bad-guy out while Turning & burning at Warp is the true battle-space. But, tricks of Nature can be used to confuse, at the Tactical level, as Spock proves with a little extra 'heat' added. That, made me an instant fan, right there.

Those worked well against the Romulan projectiles in the final battle but why were they ineffective when they dropped out of warp at Vulcan? I think Pikes Enterprise looks more realistic up close. This just looks likes the apex of what the constitution should look like. Like what the 60's ship should look like. And honestly from an internal perspective it is probably the only Starfleet ship other than the Enterprise D that genuinely looks like a nice place to live and work and not just a drab beige and grey hellscape of interior design. Yet the work spaces like the Bridge and engineering still look practical and the way the crew quarters and living spaces have metal beams and sloped walls and ceilings really lends to that feeling of being on a ship. I've seen a lot of people say the lighting still looks too harsh but I couldn't disagree more than that. The lighting is bright but on a deep space mission you're gonna want people to feel like they are in a bright space. Give them a day/night cycle. Keep up normal living as much as possible.

It is absolutely his quarters. On the opposite side of the room from the kitchen you can see a large frosted glass wall with what might be a sliding door in it. Through the frosted glass you can see a bed and other things. So it seems that this is just a living area and his sleeping area is separate.

It’s a ready room. As you said, the captains sleeping quarters are in a seperate area. This is an area that the captain can use for meetings, able to accomodate large groups of people. Pike himself is fond of cooking, and wines, and likes to use these as a team building exercise for his crew.

You have to take our current tech and the trend it's going on into account if you're going to do Trek now. Like, did people complain when the Enterprise tv show used small flat screen monitors all over the place? Because they didn't have those anywhere in the old TOS sets. It makes sense that the bridge would have touch screen controls, we're using that stuff today, let alone 200+ years from now. Using the old TOS sets just the way they have them then makes zero sense, just from a pure technology standpoint.

Correct. The complete structure of the pylons becomes more stable and resistant. Plus you remove some weight. You can see this in nearly every aircraft as soon as you remove the outer hull. The whole "skeleton" is full of cutouts and holes.

The first ,,new,, ship that looks realy cool and Star Trek ! I love the Design. ITS the best of the original Constitution ,Movie Refit (1979)and the new Era. The Main Engine Room and the Warpcore looks fantastic . Now JJ Enterprise looks a lot more like a ugly rapper/ gangsta tuning car

I love this ship, this one should of been used in the star trek reboot. Gene Roddenberry wanted the tos enterprise to look like this one except for the swept back pylons, but everything else was what he wanted. The swept back pylons does go with the pylons from the NX-01. HONESTLY I think Paramount should re-design the space / star ship scenes of the tos episodes with this ship and so. At least have the option. That's how much I love this ship.

As a 50+ year Trek fan, consider: the TOS Enterprise reflected the "muscle car" of the 60s. Looked fast, mean, and not terribly comfy. Today's ships reflect the same... but set in today's tastes. More room and creature comforts. Still fast and mean!

Are there, by any chance, blueprints of this new ENTERPRISE design? Or is there gonna be an issue of the interior sets not being able to fit inside the volume depicted on the exterior shots?

Please note that in TOS the Enterprise shields were shown to be far more powerful than we see in any of the other shows. 10 Romulan ship could not get thew the shields at all. Nomad shoots were equal to 90 photon torpedos, they were hit with three if I recall.

TOS enterprise had plot armor installed when kirk took over as captain. I'm sure pike will get some installed this season too.

@@sirrickardjameses This Enterprise's shields seem pretty good. They were facing a ship with superior armament and took many, many hits. Not once did I see the over-head steam ports blow on the bridge (maybe they rerouted them, lol).

@@michaelmorris589 they really need to do something about the exploding consoles. There's no reason your computer should explode in the middle of a battle. Especially on the first shot.

I'm a bit of a mid-century modern fan so the look of Pike's quarters, with those exposed, angular structures, looks cool. The fire in that sweet pad could, I'm guessing; be safely contained in a force-field. :)
