I'm an event videographer. The Pro Res recording for me is essential for fast turn around. The Pro Res files are much easier to edit. Recording on an SSD that I can plug directly into my computer and start editing without transferring the files is a big time saver. My GH5's also record internally so, I always have a back up.

Thanks for making me feel normal about my film work. I've had a Ninja for a year and have been frustrated. It seems harder to operate than it should be. Last Friday, I recorded a stage show with two tripod cameras, one walk-around camera, and a digital audio recorder. The setup (by myself) was a lot of work. The Ninja gave me problems. After 15 minutes of trying to solve it, I was out of time and put it away. My Canon R5 was perfect without it. Your video helped me see the light. Thanks

I agree lighting and other fundamental principles matter the most for iq, but for some cameras example gh5, external recorders make it possible to record 10 bit image even at 4k60p. And thats really important because gh5 cant handle v-log colorprofile in 8 bit. You will get green&purple "macroblock" artifacts in the picture very easily even at base iso. So if you want to film vlog with gh5 and have slowmotion in your project, the only realiable option is to go with external recorders..

I'm in a similar boat as you. For the most part, I don't use my Monitor for when I'm running around. Its the difference between needing a cage vs not in my case. But when the project is very sensitive and I need to make sure its bang on, I love my monitor option for that!

The atomos recorders are fantastic and have soooo many advantages. Yes they're not for everyone but a couple of bits not mentioned are: -The record time is limited by drive size and you can use spinning disk drives in hd so you can get enormously long recordings recorded onto exceptionally cheap media -an extra 2 channels of audio (theoretically more). -pro res is almost an industry standard for editors -hdmi sdi cross conversion -atomos sync adapters for multi cam shoots Having said this though, the review does highlight that one day, atomos recorders like this may well not have too much point to them when camera manufacturers start using decent codecs and removing record limits across the board.

Best reason to use the Ninja V is cost. If you price out 1TB of XQD cards or UHS-II SD cards, they are more expensive than a 1TB SSD and the Ninja V.

This is what I am grappling with - SD cards vs. external recorders. It's not a clear cut decision. Both have their pros and cons (and costs).
@brackman71
@brackman71 5 жыл бұрын
@@channelgufin9633 SD cards are fine, as long as your camera has TWO card slots so you never lose a day of filming because of a glitch. Otherwise, the external recorder *becomes* your "second SD card slot"... with the added benefits of being able to record in a different codec than your camera supports, and being able to have the extra features your camera may not have (focus peaking, monochrome monitoring, waveform displays, unlimited recording time, etc.).
@marcopervo

Go with the external recorder. It's a better value overall unless an external monitor will hinder your shooting. The Shogun 7 extended the service life of my GH5, expanded it's functionality, provided a large viewing area, and gave me the opportunity to shoot Pro Res RAW with rental cameras.

it’s about workflow as you stated -working in ProRes. My GH5 doesn’t do well with long gop, in FCP. For the future if you have time? I would like to see how to get TC Into my Zoom F2 BT. I know Atomos has the atomx synch and you can use the atomos ultrasync blue or Tentacle Track E and jam synch to a synch e, but I’m trying to keep it simple. I also think that the upcoming Panasonic GH6 will have a real (non-drift TC ref in?) or genlock? So for now I’m just in the refine method of slate , clap, reference track and use synch in FCPX. It looks like plural eyes got consumed by the Red Giant $$. I’m also avoiding the NP-F batteries to use with the Atomos expansion pack since I’ve jumped to gold mount and dtap to 12volt - -> Ninja V

Cool i'm still undecided about this product ? but i see the necessity for it. Though i believe atomos is coming with a replacement very soon? and it if does happen ! I would like to see a simple usb-c output for external ssd, m2 .... etc. It would be like blackmagic mini pro. now this will be a great necessity specially for the R5 and A7s iii particularly heating issues and cf card that are out of budget and limited in recording time ...

HOLD ON. For vlogging/youtube purpose i agree, buy lights they will up your production 10x even if your camera and lens cost 1.000$. But for client work, you need one of the monitors. You cant send a hd or full hd file to a client that pays money no matter how much light you use. They will expect the highest quality and often times they have someone running PR and want to review the footage. Yes you can record 4k in camera, but its not enough. Also ProRes saves you a shit ton of time. Creating proxies with ProRes takes 10seconds and makes editing 50x smoother than in camera recording. Also you have backup in case your SD cards fail for fun. You skipped alot of details on the monitors that makes them great... besides the ones ive mentioned. KZbin = dont need it Clients = YES YES YES.

I think you did a good job covering the features of this product; however, for my money, not enough attention is paid to three of the most important features to me. I shoot a lot of live theatre, concerts, and dance performances. I use three or four cameras depending on the situation. Capturing on SSD is far more economical and convenient that SD cards. After shooting the event, I don’t have to transfer my files. I just plug in the drives and start editing. Because everything is shot in ProRes, no proxies or transcoding is necessary. The editing is fast, fluid and effortless. I appreciate all the other features of my Atomos recorders; however, I’d buy them for these reasons alone.

No because Jeromy the CEO of Atomos called Blackmagic Nazis and illegally stole their IP. Read here: sites.thomsonreuters.com.au/journals/files/2010/09/WR-1.2_VassWatson.pdf Look at this video where he is a maniac and calls Blackmagic Nazis: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmHGlquwf7GJf9U READ THE COMMENTS TOO BRAW is a better codec and yet Atomos don't give it to us because they want us to pay for expensive cameras like Panasonic and Nikon and their monitors just so we can use a shitty and expensive Apple version of RAW. Blackmagic took Jeromy to court as well. Blackmagic may want to offer it but Jeromy is so arrogant that he says no which means we pay the price. He just doesn't want to give it to us what a bad dude.

No. It can't record resolution that your camera sensor cannot output. I have a GH5, and can record 4K 8bit @ 60P, and 4K 10bit at 30P to SD cards in the camera. If I want to record 4K 10Bit @ 60P, I need an external recorder like the Ninja V. Panasonic does not have the record length limitation like some cameras, so that is not an advantage for me.

So I'm looking at getting the Ninja V, although may consider the Ninja Inferno if it makes sense to. 1. MrAlwaysOnTen The biggest reason I use the Ninja is for the ProRes codec. Much smoother to edit with compared to H.265 (on my PC anyway). Also you can push colors a bit further and tweak exposure with the extra bandwidth. The second reason is a 1TB SSD drive for the Ninja cost me the same amount as a high speed 64GB SD card for my camera. So much cheaper and easier. Keep in mind though your file sizes will be much bigger. I shot last week in 4K, 10bit, ProRes HQ and used up 150GB in about 20 min on the Ninja V.

Jay Quatro what’s smoother to you h264 or pro res?
@Flashproback
@Flashproback 5 жыл бұрын
MrAlwaysOnTen Usually a non compressed file will be smoother to edit like any kind of raw footage (but also have their own disadvantages too), and because H264 is compressed, the pc needs to make more work to read the file and edit the file, also trying to apply effects, color correction and anything else, will make a little more complicated for the CPU, there's also GPU assistance, but that's another story for another time.

When you say 15 stops on the Shogun 7 it records 15 Stops?
@gcprost
@gcprost 3 жыл бұрын
Just replying for Griffin. It can display 15 stops. It will record as many stops as your camera is capable of.

the ninja assassin is a brilliant middle ground if you want a more casual monitor like the ninja v, but need 7 inches in your life.

Little confused, you rather carry a Big O light, rather than a 5 inche monitor that will give you better quality...You did say you like to carry light...

Everyone forgets to say the BIGGEST thing about external recorders. THEY CAN ONLY RECORD what your camera can OUTPUT. If your camera can't output 4k for example, then the recorder will simply re-encode 1080 into 4k, or whatever other formats you chose. PAY EXTRA attention to what YOUR camera can output. Otherwise, you will be buying this $700 recorder as a MONITOR only.

Thank You. You just answered the question I posted. So in other words. It would just be upscaling 1080P and it would look bad.

@jajadoctor 3 жыл бұрын
But upscaling in a much better codec than your camera does internally. You can tell the difference, its not all about pixels
@thanksmark

@@jajadoctor again, if your camera can't output that codec, you will simply reencode crappy codec into prores, which isn't gonna look any better. But if your camera can output better codec, then you're correct
@jajadoctor
@jajadoctor 3 жыл бұрын
@@thanksmark the signal itself is not encoded like it does wjen creating a clip internally. The output is not h264, thats the difference. A 422 file created out of an 8bit hdmi signal is better than the h264 internal version
