Ideally, software should simply be able to dynamically tell the OS through the multi-threading API whether the thread requires single-threaded performance, large cache, low power, data and co-concurrency proximity requirements with other threads, etc. and be scheduled on the most appropriate available cores instead of some arbitrary external software forcing things. Also, outright parking cores seems a bit excessive when you can simply set processor affinity to steer a task to specific CPUs.

@@serena-yu That doesn't make any sense: Microsoft and Linux multi-threading APIs already allow threads to set their own priority levels, so nothing is stopping them from requesting the highest priority today if they wanted to yet practically all software either lets the OS decide or actually lowers priority on background threads. Setting everything to highest priority when it doesn't actually need it would just piss people off by causing unnecessary performance issues with other software.

@ceciliacole5098the average person aren’t building a PC from scratch. I just look on Alienware and cyberpower, they aren’t using 3D chips. Time is money and this would create a nightmare situation for their tech support teams and make a ton more work for assembly. If you are building or upgrading PCs you should be knowledgeable of what you are buying or building for someone. No, not all hardware is plug and play. You need to do a few steps to get everything working properly. Tinkering is part of the fun of building custom PCs on current high-end hardware. If you aren’t into it then maybe a pre-build PC is a better option for you…

@@DeKosta I specifically assigned each part of my system to specific games/apps and now the whole thing runs without problem OCd. I dont know if this "measurement" matters to anyone but it was the easiest test to run repeatedly without going through a bunch of benchmarking software, the Benchmark in R6 is good for testing these chips, without optimization Unity games stutter on the x3Ds and R6 is a great example of that, so i made it my testing ground. I didnt use the game bar/game mode method and managed to get the cores parked properly when im playing whatever or doing whatever (streaming/gaming/videocalls/4browser tabs minimum at the same time is my normal use case). Anything that isnt a game is given the least priorities. My R6 went from 330-355fps to 473 and the BIGGEST PART is the stutters are completely gone, and thats all i wanted anyways... again, i dont use game bar/game mode, and managed to make this chip behave. so i agree with you on the "not necessary at all" but i do have to admit, if someone just did the steps in the video theyd be at the same place i am, but also against that very point theyd have worse latency than my setup so i guess its only worth it if you know youre the kind of person to make use of that extra timing during Realtime scenarios, otherwise yeah, youre right, just plug and play and stfu xD

As a techie I think this is terrible. The average user will not get this. This chip will only be good for advanced user's. AMD seems to have made some poor design decisions this generation. I'm a big AMD guy but this has to be done better with the 8000 series or AMD will be in trouble. I have no interest in upgrading from the 5000 series. These massive temperatures are ridiculous. I know they say 95C is a safe operating temperatures but come on. Intel and AMD need to make things better heat and efficiency wise. Not everyone is okay with watercooling. I wonder if AMD has considered an L4 cache on the IO-die. The bandwidth and latency is limited by the IF, but would still be much faster than RAM access. It would also have the advantage that there's significantly less heat output from the IO-die compared to a CCD, both CCDs would not be thermally constrained by the cache die and both CCDs would benefit the same way from a L4 cache on the IO-die.

Sorry dude…….but you are also wrong. I have taken all of these steps and Core parking still doesn’t work on certain motherboards without additional steps. The 7800x3d is the fastest gaming cpu because it is made up of only 1 CCD. AMD’s core parking on 2 CCD chips only works on some motherboards and not on others. On my Asus Prime Z670 it doesn’t work at all, and uses the higher clocked cores rather than the 3d vcache cores. The only way to get it to work properly is to find “CPPC” in bios and change it to “cache”. The other options are 1) Auto 2) Frequency 3) Driver and 4) Cache. I have tried all of them and used Ryzen master to track core usage in a gaming scenario. Only “cache” used the correct CCD. All of the other options used the higher clocked cores. Jay’s Two Cents did a video on this where, on his board, “driver” worked. AMD needs to fix this on dual CCD 3D Vcache CPU’s. Otherwise, it’s just worthless having 3d vcache on only 1 CCD unless it’s a single CCD CPU. FIX CORE PARKING AMD!! IT DOES NOT WORK PROPERLY AT ALL!!!!

I just want to open a program and think about it, not about if my PC is running optimally. If they solve the software and maybe use windows affinity to target the cache cores to games instead of disabling half the CPU, then I would consider it. The only thing with the 7950x3d and 7900x3d is that is doesn’t know how to use the x3d V cache and accidentally turns off the wrong CCD with the X3d v cache.

It was explained in the video. Makes the chips more expensive, does not really add performance and may even lead to performance regression. And please remember Genoa-X, they also need chache dies for these CPUs. And server chips are much higher in price and revenue than mainstream chips.

The 3D v-cache on both allegedly saw little to no benefit and would have resulted in a likely far slower chip so they took the best of both worlds. If they figure out how to make it more viable for both to have the 3D v-cache for ryzen 8000 and it be better than just 1, then they'd change it. As for now, its still relatively in its infancy with only one processor before these three having any 3D V-cache at all so, figuring out how to raise the clock speeds whilst still having the cache on both chiplets so it's overall not going to suffer in applications that require higher clock speeds is likely on their radar. As for now, this is really their first actual trial of the tech with multiple versions of their CPUs, not just the 7. So it's reasonable to expect some form of teething pain when implementing it into a different cpu entirely. It will probably help them in the long run as they can further develop the tech to be more efficient and to the point they'll be able to have all dies with full 3D v-cache.

I think I get it, 32mb of cache on a normal cpu, and 96mb V cache next to it. I think this some quirky L4 cache happening here. Either that or there is a separation between the use cases of the 2 caches, basically offloading certain cache types to one over the other. Like games for example, they have information the V cache can store more easily while the standard cache works on everything that isn't gaming.

Nice breakdown - unfortunately it didn't help me. Actually, installing the AMD 3D Vcache performance optimizer made things worse. My fan noise went astronomical any time I launched a game. Uninstalling the optimizer after I got it installed reverted fan noise back to normal, silent - which I prefer. Either with or without the optimizer, I never showed cpu's parked. Even running cinebench as aagame.exe as suggested. As aagame with optimizer, fans were loud. As cinebench.exe, fans were quiet. So very strange. Anyway, thanks for the explanation.

This seems very niche, maybe??? For people thatll do more then just gaming. If your gaming, and streaming, will the cpu use the 3d side for that, and then use the non 3d side for streaming and other tasks? Is this a bigx3d dot big approach? Either way for tech enthusiasts, this is a win, and another cool Innovation to play around with and see what people can accomplish.

That game Bar may help slightly with the 5900X and 5950X, also 7900X and 7950X chips like you can make sure Game bar is using the faster CCX. If you have one of these parts and look in (Hardware Info) a free tool, you will see that you have 2 separate CCX's and one of them usually hit's higher clocks slightly over the other.. In other words you can at least make sure you are gaming on the Binned CCX over the slower CCX, It may make a 2% difference and probably isn't worth doing.. But anyway I'm still on AM4 and Very happy..

as a streamer i love this chip. reduced load on the gpu by setting the encoder to the amd radeon graphics on the chip, my 2nd monitor uses the radeon graphics from the cpu, and i set the priority of anything else running under all my games to be Low while keeping the games i play at RealTime which tells windows where to put the cpus power where i choose when i play/stream and this keeps the full chip in workmode, the gaming cores are used only for the game and the rest of the cores are still active being used for other applications on my 2nd monitor and because the non x3D cores are still active when the other apps dont need their attention the cores directly assist with the gaming load, too. It feels good to see the whole system working together
