I drive out of Minnesota and upper Midwest. Our mechanic always directs drivers to IDLE the truck when filter is plugging. After a half hour or a touch more, the fuel will work itself through the filter. If a driver accelerates, more fuel will rush in and clog filter because fuel can’t work its way through. Works for me all winter long. Give it a shot next time:-)

Dan Dan the professional flat deck man. I remember driving in Canada, that’s where I am from and it was so cold that my truck heater could barely keep up and I was in a Western Star noted for its great heating capabilities. The exhaust heat and moisture would come out of the stacks and hang in the air for a least a quarter of a mile. Now that’s some cold. I remember I had to drop one trailer and hook up to another then head to the states. I unhooked ok but The 5th wheel froze open and would not close when I backed in to hook up to my south bound trailer. I had to take a big steel pipe and beat the 5th wheel with it to get it to close and I mean beat the 5th wheel. It took 15 mins to get it to close. I think that was my coldest time in a tractor trailer. Once hooked and on the highway I had concerns would the 5th wheel open back up since it took so many hits to get it to close. I was glad once I hit the warmer temperatures in the states. If your not used to cold windy frigid temperatures it tends to be not much fun. All in all I would never give up my days driving in real frigid temperatures. For me no matter what was thrown at me we got the job done. I was some proud driver, the company could count on me. Never did they get a phone call I missed my p/u or deliver due to weather conditions. Well Dan thanks for posting. You and Bailey are a great team and fun to watch. Have a great and a safe day. Happy trails to you..

Here's my unsolicited advice, Dan, after driving 6 years professionally in Minnesota, and gelling up several times. 1. You can overdo it with additive. I remember pouring multiple bottles of PS into my tank and gelling at +8F pulling an empty flatbed thru a stiff crosswind. Turns out, a key ingredient in those bottles will gel at, you guessed it, 8 degrees. Less is more with that stuff. 2. A tank full of good winter blend fuel, free of any additional additives by me, is the best thing you can do to your truck to avoid gelling. I recommend Kwik Trip fuel, I've never gelled on their premium fuel. 3. I was told by a trusted source that Loves blends their winter fuel according to the temperature that day. It is not consistent. 4. Consider a 25 micron fuel filter instead of 10.

Winter formula to keep truck happy, I always used 911 in fuel (#2), I had a 12 volt heating pad around the fuel filter. If below 0 the truck stays running until I get home.

I don’t know about Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel, but in the old days, I would mix 3 or 4 gallons of unleaded gas and 2 or 3 quarts of automatic transmission oil in my diesel and I could run the Dakotas and not freeze up. Other than that, when I would get in the north country I always made sure I had low fuel until I got to number 1 diesel and fill up with that. Like I said, that was back in the old days.

Worked on school buses and motor coaches and trucks up here in Minnesota for 43+ years. Dealt with -20 F and below most winters. The temperature here sometimes will go two weeks and never go above -10 even during the day. #1 fuel is your friend and stay away from the bio fuel if you can . We would rebuild our air dryers every fall. It’s really tough now with all the emissions systems on this equipment, idling just kills these DPF and SCR systems.

Stay warm. Im truckin in northern BC Canada and every fall I get a fresh oil change, air filters, fuel filter and air dryer cartridge. Add the winter front and theres nothin much more you can do. Hi Dan. Cold winter trucking sure can have it's drawbacks. I didn't hear you say anything about where you bought your fuel before you got into the cold. Lots of drivers are not mindful of fueling in the warmer weather and then going north with fuel not meant for it. Also, if you shut off some of your tanks and only circulated on two, or better, one tank, you would keep your fuel warmer but have to fuel a bit more often. Travel safely.

i mentioned this before, when i was in ND west of Bismarck, was in a rest area during a whiteout. didnt know it till the next day, was suppose to keep the water warm not the oil. kept turning the revs up but the the oil didnt get very warm, didnt check the water but it was probably warm enough. every time i idled my truck it cost me, but the company said i had to fork out the funds if i wanted a generator hooked up, they wouldnt provide one. if you was in Calif you were screwed cause you could only idile for 5 minutes in a TS. didnt really get real cold in S. Dan, I used to run up there in that Cold country back in the 1980's, one nite sitting on the road changing fuel filters and taking fuel line off to thaw out. Taught me to heed old timers warning.... put 5 gal. Regular gas in 150 gal diesel full. No more icing up. Engine ran warmer, just had to gages close. When headed back home ( DFW Tx) made sure to top off fuel tanks often to get fuel flow back to normal. Another occasion got bad fuel in Des Moines. Fuel additive didn't help. Had to use 1 Qt of Rubbing Alcohol in each tank to dissipate water in tanks. I used to run Dallas to Chicago, to Billings Mt.& Back. Be safe keep Bailey warm .

In the past, loggers and farmers up North where I live just pour in a shot of gas with the cold weather we have up here. Sounds drastic, but it works. The auto parts store is a long way away for most and these old boys wouldn't buy that fuel additive anyway. Luckily, diesel up here is winter blend and gelling is very rarely a problem even way below zero.
@toddblankenship87949 ай бұрын
The fleetguard cross reference for that cat f/w separator lasts longer without plugging up in the cold weather. I’ve been running all cat in the summer and swapping to the fleetguard water separator in the winter. I’m sure it doesn’t filter as good as the cats, but it beats swapping them every 5,000 miles.
