My dad had a 400 in the early 1980's and there wasn't much aftermarket for these engines. The engine was a stock 30 over rebuild , with a Edelbrock dual plane and 600cfm carter.The heads were milled to bump up the compression ratio. An Isky RV type cam was us along with a recurved duraspark distributor. Longtube headers with a true dual exhaust. A C6 automatic with shift improvement kit. This combination was installed in a 1980 F250 Camper Special Ranger pick up. That truck was a real torque monster that could flatten hills .It surprised a lot of people. If you put that in a half ton it would be a blast ( traction would be the biggest problem). Today there are more performance parts available and better technology.

The 400 was underrated for sure. I had one in my 78 bronco that really surprised me at how much power it had.

Only thing XLT on that truck is the XLT badge itself. I own an all original 1972 XLT Ranger short-bed. It has fake woodgrain on the inside of the doors and fake woodgrain on the tailgate. It has cloth seats. Other than that, you can't tell them from an F100 Custom Ranger. That is the original pattern of the inside of the doors of a Custom Ranger though. I forget what the original Custom seats were like. This looks to be a very nice truck to own.

i'm building 70 high boy got a 70 ford motor home for extra parts it has cpt. seats with a very cool interior plus has a 428 with auto the front clip is perfect condition the 4x4 has tool box ranger xlt with dana 60/80 lockers 4 speed top loader both have no rust got the 4x4 for 250 bucks with a 67 front clip on it with a 429 blown head gasket some one put in it but still have the motor stands for the 429 but i like the fe block

I would really like to know the numbers of cam and what nots I have an original 67 F100 one owner that was my dad and I have had motor rebuilt in 1986 but didn’t get that rumble and I’m in process of having my original 352 rebuilt, the heads have already been done with all new everything and now the lower parts! So any advice is welcomed!!

Carl, I’d love to let you in on the secret, but the real secret is...I’m not a gear head, I just like old vehicles. So, I took it to a machinist. This guy used to race top fuel and actually raced against Don Garlitz (sp?) back in the day. He asked me if I, “wanted a cam in it.” My response was that I wanted some rumble but not too much. Apparently an ex top fuel guy’s definition of a little rumble is a bit more that I anticipated. I like it, but know nothing of the cam that I could pass along. Apologies. Brad

C-FLO GARAGE-ENT I hear ya brother ... Times change ... So Our mind and our taste ... I went the other ways , I was crazy for a Camaro , I couldn't afford one .... So I bought a 79 F-100 ranger XLT , back in the days people told me I was crazy to buy it , but I still wanted one of these 67-72 but I was hard to find one in good shape in Australia . A few mods can really wake up a stock engine. You don't have to go broke.

The Ford 360 was a much maligned motor. It lasted forever, but it really had no power because the compression was so low and cammed to tow anything up a step grade wide open and not overheat just like a medium duty big truck.

Yes, headers give the 360 about 10 more horses. Other than that, it makes little since to do anything to that 8 to 1 compressor. 390 or 428 crank bolts right in. Must change the rods if you plan on turning more than 6,000 RPMs. Of course, always sound check those thin casting blocks before adding any horses and do your math on top piston clearance. I might build a 410 for mine some day just for shits and giggles.

A cam won't help without adding some compression. The two have to be engineered together! Big cam low compression equals slug! And sounds and is like slug. A cam won't fix your low compression 360. Put some pistons in it.

That's nice. I have a '71 F100 that has been parked for about 17 years with a 360 engine and about 52,000 original miles on it. It was running when it was parked but it isn't now. I want to restore it similar to yours but that will take a lot of work. This is really nice. How much did it cost to do all of that ?

Cooper, I found the truck on E-Bay in Kentucky and got it for 13.5. Drove it home and had the motor redone a few years later. The motor alone ran about 10k - if memory serves.

I'm a Ford guy and I love the old fe engines but the 360 was a dog, a good engine with lots of tourqe a good workout truck engine, can but it was not a performance engine at all.
