Dave, your infectious enthusiasm for your work is always a pleasure to watch. Working with culverts was actually part of my job as a land drainage engineer, I like the pipe spear you guys made, it got the job done. For smaller culverts we used an old truck tire tied to a steel rope, push the free end through with drain rods, then hook it up to an excavator and drag the tire back through like a pipe cleaner.

The rocket pipe looked great, they guy who made it sure did a good job, it cut through the blockage easily by the look of it, sure was a lot of pressure the way the water surged out when it broke through.

Good evening Dave 🌙, FYI: Here at the Cooperstown and Charlotte Valley Railroad we had a 32 inch corrugated pipe that the Beavers plugged up. On the upstream side at the headwall of the pipe. It's about 30 feet down to the headwall. We cleaned the dam away, water was flowing. We noticed a sinkhole on the downstream side of the track behind It's headwall. Further investigation found a 8 inch vertical separation between the two pipes at the joint 20 feet back in the hill. Only way to fix it was to carve into the hillside, remove the bad pipe, sleve in a 24 inch HDPE corrugated pipe 70 feet in and out the other side and backfill. Big project. Pictures on your cellphone 📱 📷 . Time to bring out the winter clothes and stay warm my friend. Stay safe and have fun 👍. Richard Bause Cooperstown and Charlotte Valley RR.

Our town crew uses a backhoe to shove a tree trunk through the culvert to clear out the blockage. We have since gone to using smooth walled plastic culverts. It doesn't fully prevent beavers from damming them up but does make it harder for them. As a last resort our town has a professional trapper on call. Cool video!

Double wall pipe is the way to go poowg. In our excavating business that's all we use. We've had other culvert pipes plug in the past and have called in a pro trapper, one time he got 14 beavers out of one small area. Pesky little rascals they can be. We had beavers plug up another pipe a few years ago Bob, actually 2 pipes. They got a professional trapper in and he trapped out 14 beavers, one of them was huge. We had a professional trapper come in a couple of years ago on another culvert pipe they plugged up Keith. In one weeks time he got 14 beavers out of there. One of them was huge. They had plugged up in that spot a 36 inch and a 60 inch pipe. They are ambitious rascals for sure. O worked at a sawmill for a while. We had our own older than dirt fire truck. Boss had me use it to blast out a culvert one time. It was fun but once was enough. Im no culvert cleaner.

ive seen people use a some sort of cable or rope and a small tire attached to the middle and when its clogged you pull it through one way and when clogged again pull it through the other

That may have worked pretty well here, but we would have had to got a skin diver in to get down into the other end of the pond to do it. Will they take a backhoe down there at some point and rip out the blockage, or is the upstream watershed short enough that it doesn't need to have 72 inches of clear pipe to maintain the drainage? I'm a little surprised they don't have a flat car on a siding for hauling larger loads like that pipe. Was that pushing the capacity of the boom truck, weight-wise?

They sure do need to take an excavator down there and clean the other end of the pipe out MusicByWinston. But most likely it will never happen. It's very steep hill and they would have to cut a road in from the side to get a machine down there. It will plug up again if they don't tho. They typically run 24/7 Matt. However there is never a set time table, it all depends on the amount of barges they can get in and on how the prep plant is running. When everything is going well we run 6 round trips per 24 hours. If no barges, no trains and if plant is down with no coal, no trains, so it's always a crap shoot. Nope! Nope! Nope! Not ready for 20° nights! It's still in the upper 70's and lower 80's for us! It's usually closer to the end of November before it starts getting down below freezing at night. We haven't had our heat on but one night so far this fall and that was because I'm a sissy when it comes to being cold!

@ccrx6700 growing up my family spent most of our time in the deep south on military bases. When pops retired we moved closer to my mom's family in North East Indiana. Before that I'd only seen snow one time in my life. It snowed a couple inches at Ft. Hood Texas in the middle of the night but it was gone shortly after the sun came up. The first winter we had in Indiana we had 16 foot snow drifts in front of our house and it was 40 below for 6 weeks! I couldn't wait to get my rump back down below the mason Dixon line! Part of the reason I love east Kentucky so much is because of the weather. We'll have a few snows every year but they only stay on the ground for a few days before melting away. Our summers are overly hot either. I have a sister in LA (lower Alabama) when it 110° there we are in the mid to upper 70's. It's odd for us to see many days near 100.

No one cleaned out the upstream side Jim. Don't ask me why not because I don't have an answer for you. It would be a real pain to do as to get back to that pipe you'd have to cut in a road in the fill. Eventually that small pipe will get plugged up and then more of a mess to deal with will happen you are right about that. @@ccrx6700 Use water hoses to widen the pipe opening from both inside and outside (hydraulic mining), cut out exposed roots and branches, repeat until opened up enough. Water can be pumped up from nearby lake (into a settling tank) or brought in a tank car. Should be lots of fun (for the young guys).

I just read an article about LNG by a professor at Cornell University. He said that coal can have less overall negative impact on the environment than burning LNG. I would imagine that is because of the energy needed to liquify the natural gas, and then transport it for thousands of miles in ships. Then there is more lost energy on the other end to turn it back to a gas, so it can be delivered to consumers. All those losses add up to a lot of carbon dioxide being generated, just to deliver it to where it can be burned, or used as a chemical feedstock. So it looks like coal will be used for some time yet. I see the Feds just approved a new oil export facility in the Gulf of Mexico off the Texas coast. Jim Cramer was on CNBC TV broadcasting from a Chevron oil platform 115 miles off the Louisiana coast. The head of Chevron told him that the deep oil field they just opened up will be producing oil for between 20 and 30 years. He speculated that there is a lot of oil remaining in the deeper parts of the Gulf, 3 miles below the surface. He said the pressure down there was 20,000 pounds per square inch, so they had to develop new technology to drill that deep. The platform is sitting in water a mile deep. So that is 4 miles of drill pipe to deal with. You know there must be a lot of oil down there to spend that kind of money to get to it. The platform has about 100 people working on it.

That's just what I say about all this environment thing. They only count the final thing and not all the process to make it. Like here in UK We get wood chips all the way from Canada to burn instead of coal in a plant that was supplied directly from the mine next to it. We also get LNG in ships from thousands of miles away.

Very interesting to hear about the LNG Bill. It's nice to have actual experts write stuff like that instead of having news reporters do it who have an agenda to satisfy their readers political views. Anyway now we should have 4 more years of coal production after the recent election results. I hope he again takes us out of the Paris Accord. The last administration a couple of years ago approved another oil platform in the Gulf which got him in some pretty hot water with the greenie people over that. If there's one thing we need, it's more energy from a variety of sources. The demand for energy is tremendous and growing .
