Also, just mixing of popular vernacular with proper ways of pronouncing things - LangFocus does a great video that discusses this with his "The Scots Language (or Dialect?!)" video, about 2 min in. Additionally, the video of his: "Is English Really a Germanic Language?" goes into some of the influences on English.

Thanks Stefanie for this lesson. The word "Comfortable" that you have covered is a tough one for me and usually forgot the correct pronunciation in English, maybe because in Spanish we have the same word written identically, but the way that you say that in Spanish is different, the strong syllable changed and I believe that is the main reason. I am in Louisiana in a training. Yesterday I went to an auction and it was a wow! I barely got what those guys in front of me were saying. They spoke so fast plus their southern accent. It was a real challenge! Specially when you are so used to your perfect English pronunciation. Big hugs and thank you again.

It has to do with values of the vowels. To make it short, a short vowel usually has the format V+C(+C) or else it could be a diphthong or a long vowel. Beware! There are many exceptions to the rule!

Steph I loved this video...it is very useful for me to work the pronunciation. When you repeat again and again the words that´s the best way to learn the pronunciation. When you say that you tend to write words the way that they sound it's the same thing that happens to us Hispanics. Some times I´m writting something and I realize I´m writting words the way that they sound. Anyways...go ahead with more videos like this...they are not boring, they are very useful. Regards from Argentina.

I love how you do it, that's the way every english teacher has to do it explaining clearly every single and little detail. I'm a native spanish speaker (Dominican Republic - Latin) and I got many years learning english and I understand and speak as well as a can but so far my biggest problem have been my listening and neutralisation accent, and let me let you know that YOUUUU are the kind of teahers that really help us (Latin) differentiate a wrong way to mantion the words from the right way. Veryyy good, I guess you do it that way cause you maybe know how to speak spanish or something like that.

@lynnodonnell47643 жыл бұрын
Actually the 't' should have a crisp sound as in the word LIT : I LIT a match... To pronounce it 'lider-lee' is a short, sloppy way but the listener stills knows what the speaker is saying. English is pretty forgiving.

With the word “Thought”, I noticed that when I say “That’s what I thought” vs “I thought about it” it sounds different. In the first sentence, it doesn’t have a pronounced “t” sound, like you said But in the second sentence, there’s a soft “t” sound, more like a “d” “That’s not what I though-“ Vs. “I thod about it” I think we add the “d” sound when “thought” comes before a word beginning with a vowel, but leave off the “d” sound when “thought” comes before a word that begins with a consonant. If you say “I though- about it” without the subtle “d” sound, it stops sounding like American English, and sounds more British or Australian.

OMG! That murderer thing is my absolute biggest problem and it's prolly what's keeping me from sounding like a native english speaker. Every time I have to pronounce words that sound like murderer I just switch into british pronunciation and that's how I ruin the whole thing😪 Oh is that 'thoroughly' what I pronounce ''though+rough(f)+ly''? 😂

"Entrepreneur" is French world at base. the French world is the most hard to pronounce for frenchpeople because mind want to pronounce it like native language ;-)

Not boring at all, very helpful. I've always struggled with spelling as my native language is a phonetic one so I find it challenging to write in English.
