I just sold my first coffee table. All made out of construction wood. I spent about $35 and had some extra wood laying around the house. I sold it for $120. I delivered it, and it looked so good in that ladies house. She thanked me and couldn’t stop saying how beautiful it look. Such a good feeling. Thanks for all the good info. Keep on cutting along.

@@bawxofchawclets4836 I just recently built 2 big nightstands and was the first time I built and installed a drawer. Was a little reluctant with the whole drawer thing but as usual I made it out to be worse than what it was. The first drawer and drawer guide placement was a little awkward but the second one was a breeze!

I dont tell this to people often, and especially here so openly on KZbin. I am a recovery drug addict. I did heroin and pain pills for 15+ years...and I'm lucky to be here today, when I should have died so many times. I wanted to become sober for my 3 sons. It was extremely hard to do, and I had struggled with finding a way to do it, and on my terms. I have found recovery program and have been with it for 3 years now. I had always been into construction work, and found the transition into wood working fairly easy. Getting all the tools I needed is a bit challenging for a 46 year old man start9over from zero....but, I'm finding a way. I have to admit, these videos like this, truly are an inspiration. I've been watching them while I hand saw a log to get pieces of wood I want and need for a project( makes me wish I had a band saw!!!!).... Thanks for the time that you put into making your videos. I know I appreciate it, and I'm sure so do so many others...... When I'm finished with the project that I'm working on, I'll send you a picture via Facebook.....

You and your family are a true inspiration, thank you so very much. I am starting with woodworking at age 46 after losing my job last year, I just did not have the courage to face people in our small town called Rustenburg in South Africa, early in 2020 I decided I had to do something to occupy my mind and face and conquer my fear of people. Whenever I have a "bad day" I watch one of your video's and tomorrow I get up and start working, ready to face anything. Please don't stop. I am absolutely blessed, like you, to have an amazing husband and family and friends who all support me.

Wow! Not only are you a woodworker, you are a motivational speaker. You are right about having the motivation and confidence to do whatever you want to do. I don't know where I got it from, but I always thought I could make stuff. I got into woodworking big time by watching a guy on KZbin. He was doing wainscoting. We need wainscoting. I said "I can do that!" Haven't done the wainscoting yet, but have made a bunch of interior barn door shutters. People say they look professional. The key is to watch a lot of KZbin, measure accurately, and cut precisely. Everything you say on this video is true. Just do it! By the way, my old HS students used to make me say "I like it a lot". I would say it I-like-it-alot, almost as one word. like you. It would make them laugh.

Love your story. I started out wanting to make things because I couldn't afford them. As a single mom of four... I bought a used miter saw and sander for $50 and picked up free pallets and discarded 2x's from building sites. My workbench was a stack of pallets and a folding table. I found Jay Bates as well and Steve Ramsey. I build that same outdoor chair and table. But built it for myself. I've built lots of projects from his channel. Still a big fan of Jay. I upgraded my tools with a AdSense money as well from some monetized videos about using a Cricut. Now I have an amazing shop full of tools. I often look to your channel when I'm planning my next build and need inspiration. Thank you for all that you share!

Words of wisdom. I wanted to buy a wooden American flag earlier this yearv in July. I started pricing them and decided I could make one myself. I started with a cheap miter saw, Skillsaw, a square, and hand tools. The first 2 I made were not very good compared to what I am making now, but I started selling them like crazy. Now we have a Face Book store and I am making concealed flag cases and have $2,000 worth of orders stacked up right now for Christmas. I just bought a table saw and it has revolutionized my processes and upgraded my miter saw. I am trying all kinds of different techniques and am looking to move up to furniture with the confidence learned from this channel. You can do it!

Today as a beginner in the woodcraft, I was struggling really bad with trying to make a cabinet to fit my wifes old window she bought. I pretty much gave up all hopes of getting any better. I turned off the lights to my small garage and went in the house shaking my head and ready to sell my new tools. By chance, I turned on KZbin to look up your channel and came across this video, I watched it and you gave me hope that even I can get better. I did what you did and went and found the outdoor table and chairs and felt redeemed in your words! Thanks for the video and I look foreword to more of your great videos to help the struggling beginner like myself. Now, if I can figure out how to make that cabinet!

I truly like this video. I am from South Africa. I am a woodworker and have been for three years. Not a long time lol! But I still get excited when I work with wood like rosewood, you know the smell, the touch of it color. Pine is also a favorite of mine. This video helped me a lot because my workshop is small and I mostly work outside. Haul out my machines and so on. I am currently redoing office furniture for a client and the contrast in colour of the frame and the seat and back splat is awesome. I really enjoy your videos and yes there is a lot of want to involved. Comparison with my self and other woodworkers is real. They have better tools and so on. But is what you do with those tools that defines your character . I need to think more to do more with what I have. That is the challenge. But yes I thank God for everything that I have. Good video. Cheers.

@Paul Cox yup. I bought a bunch from OfferUp and that's worked out pretty good. Some of the older guys who are getting out of the hobby or retiring or, in a couple of cases guys who bought bulk returns from big box stores (like those Amazon pallets I'm sure everybody has heard about but never had the desire to buy). I got a smokin' deal on a brand new, complete Makita circular saw because the box was crumpled. It quickly became my favorite tool (once I stuck a Diablo 40T blade on it). On the flip side, I bought a brand new, complete Ryobi jig saw kit from another guy that seems to have a blade alignment issue -- or, I'm a moron -- but I'll either figure it out or master cutting wood like an 18 year old in a buzz car, drifting around corners sidewise. 😁

I cannot say enough about how I appreciate your down to earth honesty and sharing about your days of being broke. I have stood in the cheese line waiting for a handout and have told myself if I work hard and give it my best effort that I could have a better life so I can truly relate to living paycheck to paycheck. I had a cabinet maker build cabinets for my kitchen remodel and during the process he asked my wife for the balance of the money before finishing the cabinets and skipped out on the job so I told my wife well it looks like I need to get the bits and do the rest myself and I'm proud of the finished product

Your “being broke” story... that’s your success story. That’s what pushed you to the top. Now you’re using that to reach out and help others (like me) get up there with you. This year for Christmas, my wife and I are using the money we have extra from our Christmas bonuses, to buy some tools (a router, bits, screws and materials) to build something. Not sure what yet. Lol. I’ve been binge watching your channel and a few others this past weekend and I’ve been getting a lot of ideas and inspiration for this. But your channel has given me motivation. Honestly, it’s not about the money so much. It’s about making a business that I own and make my own rules. To me, a business owner is a successful person. Regardless of how much money they make. It’s hard work. That’s a huge part of being successful. Doing the work you need to. Sorry to ramble on. Keep up the work buddy! Hope to see you and your business grow. Thanks for bringing us with on your journey! 👊🏼

Man I just found your channel man. This video is by far the best. People need this kind of inspiration especially now says with the world going upside down. You have a good attitude man and you come out as a down to earth genuine guy. I appreciate this man, I’m 32 and will be having my first child in a few months and I’ve been contemplating on taking wood working for years but fears and doubt have been my crutch since. The soon arrival of my baby daughter has me thinking different and given me that hunger for improvement once again. This has truely been an inspirational video. I am probably different from most of the viewers here. I have most of the equipment needed to start wood working. The confidence that something would sell and be able to turn a profit is a big obstacle to over come. The way you have just said to do it and if it does turn out burn it put a big smile on my face. I just build a 24 ft. X 36 ft. X 10 ft metal building on my property. I have been mauling over which direction to take. I have been a fabricator in some form or fashion most of my life . i would like to take a hobbie and make some side money. Thanks again for the inspiration.

My biggest challenge so far has been figuring out how to make cuts and fasten things without some of the tools that others demonstrate on. I just keep thinking that there are talented artisans out there who build furniture without any electric tools ( of course, some of those hand tools are more expensive than the electric ones) and that keeps me trying to figure out another alternative to making the cut I need. There is rarely one way to do anything. Finding the way that I can do it is the hard part. But it's the part that keeps me going, too. Knowing that if I just keep trying eventually I'll get it is the challenge that pushes me. That and the advice and success of guys like you. God bless, my friend. Thank you, again!

Love love love this video! I enjoy all of your videos but man thank you for this one!!! Thank you for being real and transparent with your viewers! This video has truly inspired and uplifted my spirit! This year has been so rough and yet so rewarding. I have found my gifts, talents and purpose for my life during one of the hardest seasons of my life! Both myself and my husband lost our jobs early on in the pandemic due to my oldest son contracting Covid. Like a lot of families who contracted the virus and made it through, We were so thankful to get through the covid virus thankful for life yet we were completely overwhelmed and concerned about our financial situation and how we would make it month to month going forward! God is so good he is faithful and he has protected an provided every step of the way! As a family we are closer we have more time together and my marriage is better than it’s ever been! We have been in our shed daily for months creating projects together. I have so much inventory between the handcrafted home decor products the handmade signs I’ve made to the big PCs my husband and I have created together. I have shared this because your video has truly helped me given me courage to take a leap of faith. I’ve been stuck the past month with trying to figure out how to create a business from what we have created. I’m a creative person the business/ selling side of it terrifies me. This week I was struggling so badly that I felt like giving up I haven’t even wanted to do anything creative, the spark was gone! I’ve been praying on it and then I came across this video and it spoke directly to me and gave me hope! I usually don’t comment on videos to often but I felt the need to share my story with you and let you know how you have inspired me! Thank you and God bless you 😊

I do like your "realness" in the videos. Its true, I do get a pit in my stomach when starting a project. And im not new at it either. Cars is a different thing. I know cars inside and out, havent used a repair manual in years, and I can just dive into any repair and it aint nothin' but a thing. Same with home wiring/plumbing/etc. But wood is different. You have an idea in your head, and hope it transfers to the wood the way you intended. I am going to give you a tip... You made a video with a dog kennel/TV stand. But you forgot about us cat people. My next project is a cat tree. Ive made them before, but always copied something from Amazon. This time im going to make one thats actually furniture quality, sturdy, and made with all non-toxic stains and materials. I'll post when finished. I have cats and a dog, but the ownership is pretty split 50/50, so I think there is a market for it. I havent seen a good high quality cat tree available for sale yet, but I'm going to make one. Cats are inherintly destructive, but still. I think a nice, high quality/furniture quality cat tree has a market and would look a whole lot better than the cheap cardboard crap you get on Amazon for $100. I'll let you know how it progresses. As soon as I get this pit out of my stomach that is preventing me from starting. Wood is one of those mediums that is extremely rewarding when finished. I was a Deputy Sheriff (retired) and did not get any feeling of success or accomplishment from it. I got that from doing wood work, and body work/paint on cars. Those are the 2 things that give me that feeling of satisfaction. But both are hard to initiate. Doing repairs on cars is easy. Making them look good is another thing.

I’m so happy I found your channel this year! Appreciate all the content and advice you share with us. 30 years old I purchased a house for my family to move out of NYC. First 2 lessons I learned is, contractors aren’t cheap and the end product isn’t any better if you would’ve did it yourself. After the contractors did what they had to do to comply with the contract I started doing everything on my own. I have a construction background for a lot of rough builds. Carpentry is a whole different ball game. But your 100% right on YOU HAVE TO START! I got tired of being scared to start. First wood working project I did was the outdoor storage chest!

Love this message. Very inspiring. I've built 3 things so far. The first thing was a bird feeder. It is so lopsided I was worried that I couldn't make something properly. It took a couple of months for me to try something again. Then one day a neighbor set out some free wood. I picked it up and thought "what have I got to lose" I built a 3 tier stand that I'm so proud of and my husband even said " I didn't think you could do it because of the bird feeder but this is awesome. " I have been where you were Matt. But we learn some great lessons from struggle. As Matt says you gotta have the want to, and do it. No confidence? Pick up one of Matt's plans from his site watch the video he made and start with that. Blessings to you all

With that being said every stand, bench, tv stand in our house I've built. I've made a entire room look like a cabin. Keep up the great work my man

Matt, You’re so right! You can be a woodworker, you just have to try! I never thought that I would have the knowledge skills or abilities to actually design or build anything that I would be proud to display or have in my home. Having never taken any woodworking classes or having any on hands training I started watching KZbin Videos. I stumbled across your channel and your clear instructions, great projects and encouragement made me want to try. I started with a simple step stool. That turned out great and gave me the confidence to try something else. From that simple project I learned skills that helped me with my next project, a night stand for the guest room. That turned out so well and I I was so proud of it, I put it in my bedroom! From there I acquired more tools I can’t hardly go to Lowe’s or Home Depot without “NEEDING” another tool. Circular saw, router, circular sander, cordless drill cordless driver, miter saw, clamps, and table saw. (I’m eyeing a planer now) I’m having so much fun! Creating a design and trying to make a project come together. I have now made a miter saw table, work bench, two end tables for my living room, a bench (that I now used for indoor plants) side desk/printer table and a small “high top” for the screened porch. It does get expensive so I have decided to make and sell a few things myself. I’m looking forward to making a thin blue line flag for my garage. I fortunate to have found your channel. Thank you so much for the project ideas, your clear instruction and encouragement. Woodworking allows me to clear my mind and escape of the day to day stress of work. I’m able to forget it all, de-stress, do something I enjoy, focus on me and have a good time doing it. Keep up the good work! Thank you again! Stay safe! Jeff

I have started building a few coat racks but haven't put them up for sale yet. Partly because I don't know where to start and partly because it terrifies me. I put a lot of energy into making them what I would want to spend my money on and not making it cheap. I used cast iron legs and hooks and Sapele wood for the body. Your videos have helped me to see that this is something that I can do.

Absolutely love this channel.. I’m just starting out with a woodworking business now .. I’m 51 and I always wanted to do this .. I worked offshore internationally for many years .. but I became ill with Multiple sclerosis.. and I could no longer work offshore ... my legs are weak now so full time work is no longer an option for me .. so I am on disability... but I know I can still do something with my life ... I don’t want to feel inadequate and useless.. I have a really nice shop with every tool I could possibly want .. and now that I am home all the time I want to start making some projects.. I can only work a few hours a day .. I get extremely fatigued because of my MS so I need a lot of breaks .. I find it hard to just get started.. I agree with you that you’re mind can be Your worst enemy if you let it !! I’m in the process of starting and your videos especially this one is really inspirational too me and I want to thank you brother for that .. I’ll continue watching you and thanks again ... this is Big Rod from Newfoundland Canada 🇨🇦!!

Hey Matt, (sorry for the long messase) I think I've said this before but you have helped me greatly, probably more than all other channels I follow, they have been woodworking for decades and are capable of making incredible things, plus they all have huge shops with machines I can't afford or don't even have the space for (I'm one of those back yard people you mentioned) so it always felt intimidating to even try and make something out of wood. And then I found your channel, you are humble, down to earth and honest, and that is really encouraging because you are relatable, I saw your projects and felt confident that it was ok for me to start woodworking, so I did. In the beginning I just wanted a hobby to release some stress and make things for me and my wife, but then people saw what I made and started buying things, and telling others and then those became more orders, and it's thanks to you, every time I sell something I think of the help I've gotten from you. I just finished my biggest project yet, a foldable table that I had no idea how to make, and was really nervous about everything you talked about in the beginning, but I trusted in me, and hearing the customer say "it's perfect, better than I expected" felt incredible, so thank you for that, you deserve all the success in the world and I hope the blessings keep on coming Oh, and "Get out there and make some sawdust" sounds amazing, hope a lot more people get the confidence boost they were looking for
