I can say that respecting the tools is the most important thing to learn. Been woodworking for about 2 years but hadn't been consistent until this year when I was furloughed. in May I was ripping some wood when my hand got caught in my table saw. I was careless and in a rush. Took a chunk of my thumb and went through two fingers. By the grace of God, I kept everything attached and kept some mobility in the two repaired digits. I'm grateful for the learning experience at a cost that could/should have been much higher. Your videos helped me get back out there to build. Y'all stay safe and God bless! Keep up the great work!!

Gotta say Matt I really appreciate your positivity and your attitude toward making mistakes, I really dislike the way a lot of content creators want to look like experts so they don't show or talk about their mistakes. I can get really frustrated with myself when I screw up, watching you and some of my other favorite creators has helped me realize that mistakes are going to happen and the true skill is accepting the mistake and developing skills on how to fix the mistake. While I love me some smores, it's an important skill to learn how to fix mistakes so my mess ups don't have to be used for making smores. It might be obvious since this is a comment on a youtube video but to me not doing research and not watching and learning from others is one of the most common mistakes of beginning wood workers. We are so lucky to have access to tools like youTube, Instagram, etc. So many mistakes and uncertainty can be avoided by simply watching videos of other people working, explaining and answering questions in the comments. Your advice is right on point. "I like folks that have some want to." So far my only customer is my family😁 and my wife agrees with not over spending on tools. Lol. I have learned that is best not to point out the small imperfections. I just finished a kitchen cart for my wife. She was very excited about it and sent pics to her friends and family. I then started to point out the things that I felt were mistakes. She hadn't noticed them until I pointed them out. I learned right then that if it is a good project overall your customer might not see your mistakes as a problem. Thanks for the down-to-earth video.

Great advices, Matt! As always I'm amazed by your direct and "no bs" way to explain things. Tip from me: Rookies, keep your blades sharp. Dull blades cause more harm that anything else ;) I mean hand plane irons, chisels, knives, as well as your power tool blades, saw teeth etc. Also, don't hesitate to get rid of old and dull drill bits (or sharpen them, if you are bored!..). I never sharpen drill bits however, the only things I sharpen are plane irons, chisels and carving knives. Saw blades and drill bits are much easier to just replace, because they're cheap and your time is not :)

Thanks! I'm from Brazil, just getting started with woodworking just as a hobby, I'm full-time programmer (self-taught), I usually don't do many hand work, but I love building stuff. Started building myself a vertical garden and a poop tray for my cat out of some pallets, and looking forward to get into a bit more complex projects. Right now I Only have a hammer, a hand saw, and NO drill (which will be my first tool to buy, obviously). Tools are quiet expensive here in Brazil, electric handsaw is a luxury not many can afford, but I'm taking my time, enjoying the learning process. I actually like learning the 'real' methods (no power tools) first, to then decide and assess the tools I need for the projects I want to build. Plus, i'll appreciate even more the electric tools. So my next purchases will be a Drill and a Manual Hand Planer, I plan to continue building some stuff out of some cheap pallets until I'm comfortable to move to better wood and higher-end projects. My main intention is to learn for myself as a skill, but I already see and appreciate the market and opportunities to make some side money out of it, people just love wood products. *I believe its very important to start Small*, most people really don't know jack sh*t about wood, so it's interesting to see people already loving my vertical garden, it has like a thousand mistakes in IT and i know it's a piece of crap, but people look at it and want one, even my wife was impressed when she saw it built, hell even I got impressed with myself, for a first build, it came out quiet nice (besides being total crap ahhahahhahaha but shhhh, no one needs to know its crap! They love it any way. lololol). Thanks for all your content and keep'em coming!

Great advice, thanks! I’ve been building for only 3 years. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is pacing myself and managing my projects well. Determine daily start/stop points for each section of my project. I found out I work much better, cleaner, precise, and professionally if I put in 1-2 hours a day vs consuming a whole 8-10 hour Saturday trying to finish an entire project in one session.

Love your videos Matt! One big mistake I think, is people believing you have to have the really expensive tools to be considered a "serious" woodworker. I'm all for nice tools, but buy what you can afford. I don't want to criticize anyone, but one KZbin poster even went to far to say that he had to get a Sawstop table saw, otherwise no one would take him seriously. I pointed out to him some of the most inspirational videos I have seen come from places like Indonesia, and other parts of the world. These guys are using old door hinges to create dowel making jigs, and turning circular saws upside down to make small table saws. Maybe not the safest thing in the world to do, but it appears to get the job done. These are woodworkers who believe in themselves enough to do whatever is necessary to create woodworking projects.

I am totally new! Thanks for this video. I just turned 50 and have been a welder since I was about 24, so I feel inclined to this type of work, but I have never worked with wood, just burning wire in factories. I feel like I can do this and I feel like I will enjoy it. Been racking my brain for a long time trying to figure out what I can do to stay out of factories. So glad I stumbled upon your channel!

Thank you for all of your videos I have learned so much. This one hit the nail on the head with don’t be down on yourself. My wife tells me all the time when I think my projects are not perfect she lets me know I’m a beginner and they look great. Thanks again and can’t wait for more videos.

Another great video Matt. Best advice you shared is believe in yourself. This is so true in life as well. I'm a HS coach & always tell my boys, if you say you can or you can't, you're correct.

I started out by crafting project to sell on Craigslist and craft shows. The customer demand made me get better and try different things. No matter what I was selling, some would ask for something I had never attempted. That forced me to get out of my comfort zone. This was before KZbin. Now there are thousands of videos to learn from. It’s an awesome time to start woodworking.

Your channel is so inspirational. I started off with a circular saw and a drill, spent my money on better materials. Now I have shop full of tools and I am in the process of starting my own shop. Love your channel. Keep up the good work.

Newish wood worker here. Bought a broken table saw on fb and fixed it up, have a miter saw from some house renovation projects and just won a thickness planer in a raffle. Looking to build some cutting boards. Thanks for all your tips!

I've been watching your videos on KZbin for a couple of days now, actually I found you by mistake, we learn from our mistakes. Probably the best mistake I've made in a long while. I've been wood working since 1978ish, no wood worker knows everything, and I sure don't but I've learned many things from you. Just for information, I'm a pure hobbyist, I like to work with wood. I'm not looking to make money off the stuff I make. If someone wants me to make them something and I have the skills needed to make the project, they pay for the materials. Anything left over is for me. Right now, I'm learning wood turning and specifically segmented turnings. I'm making a segmented peppermill. It's fun. Thank you for your abundance of information almost overwhelming.

Excellent tips I said as I lay here in bed at 10:00 am with 4 projects in the shop that have to be done by Christmas. You just motivated me to "get er done".

I’ll definitely keep that in mind! If it’s made of wood, it’s not set in stone! I think my biggest mistake was comparing my work to others. Other wood workers that’s been doing it for years! I got jealous so easily. I keep reminding myself that it is a process to get better. It’s not overnight!

Been at it for two years now, but only as a hobbyist. I have acquired quite a number of tools and plan to start selling in earnest in 2021. Hope to be a full time woodworking in about 4 years or so. My biggest challenge is seeing projects through to completion. I get a bit of woodworker ADD.

I have been doing different projects and some over my head but I mustered through and completed them. Part of the learning process. I have an old craftsman table saw and a Shopsmith that I got for cheap.

Some very useful advice thanks for sharing. The tool is a very good point I can fully relate to . I used to think I needed every single equipment in order to carry out a project but found that you can find so many creative ways of using whatever tools you already have.

you have earned a new sub here sir. I have been watching your videos and really enjoy them. you are my morning cup of coffee before I fire up the saws. great advice, after 25 years in contracting I can say that you are spot on with each tip. let the customer pay for those tools, make mistakes, and always have faith in yourself. mistakes happen, I have always said that you will pay tuition to learn no matter what. you can pay a school or you can make mistakes that cost money. either way your paying to learn. don't let that set you back and just know its part of the curve. If you didn't pay a school, plan on paying in the field. don't waste what you learned on beating yourself up. walk away with a lesson learned and not a loss (old coaching advise I gave the kiddos). if you learned from it then you didn't lose. always be open to listen and learn from others, that's why I'm here. I am starting a woodworking venture due to the slow down in work with all this virus junk. if it works out then I will be a very blessed man, I will no longer work a day in my life. I have enjoyed woodworking since a young boy and always wanted to be a woodshop teacher. due to life's avenues I ended up building houses instead. the virus has brought me to a point where I have to make money to feed the family and all i know is tools and wood. next to my family, those are my enjoyments in life. I would rather build something all weekend than sit at a beach and sleep in a hotel lol. anyways, i wanted to say hi and let you know that these videos are great and i really appreciate you taking the time to produce them. May God bless you ad your family and have a great day sir.
