Thanks that was really interesting. Frankly if I saw this displayed, I'd be tempted to hand-fly the start of the turn and then AP once we're approaching the outbound radial

Why is it not built into the FMS to automatically find the best appropriate speed to achieve the turn? Since like you touched upon SIDs are designed to be flown as close to the routing depicted on the charts.

i would of thought the sid, that has sharp turns, would of had speed restrictions. I do wonder if this is a Sim issue, or irl too?!

My guess is the manufacturer decided that the final say is in the pilot, as in they want to make the system predictable. Also, you need to remember that this in an old computer designed in 1980s, which is ancient by today's standards.

Sometimes PMDG 737 does similar things on SIDs or STARs, but it looks slightly different - you would see a weird wide turn and then a broken magenta line on your ND (but no discontinuity in the FMC). The solution is usually the same: it’s planning too fast, check the speeds. I believe it happens because the PMDG doesn’t recognize and respect “at or below” speed limits, but treats them as “exactly at” ones by default. When you see such limits on a chart, it is always a good idea to go to the legs page and correct them accordingly to comply with the chart.

It’s the same for arrivals as well for Boeing and Airbus. So we follow the same procedures here as well or something different cause we also need to factor in in descent speed and altitude and max allowed altitude constraints

Thanks for this very helpful tip. Do you have some experience with EDLV 27 RNAV departures in real life? It must be a very interesting and challenging departure for all IRL pilots due to SID routing and high VFR traffic ammount in this area during summer times.

dumb question: isn't it a bit weird how the fenix calculates the lat path here? why does it draw a tighter turn with the higher speed which it then corrects back to the right, requiring another correction later on, but when using a lower speed it calculates a much wider turn....

Hi Emanuel, kann es sein, dass mit dem FMC der PMDG aktuell was nicht stimmt? Wenn ich nach Stuttgart fliege hab ich keinen richtigen Descend Pfad und komme eigentlich immer viel zu hoch nach WP UNSER oder VATER bzw bin über der Schwelle noch viel zu hoch….

That's a good question, I used the same mic, but plugged into a different computer with copy/pasted settings. Need to figure that out.

Not much I could say about this really, might either be incorrect technique handling the tiller, or mechanical failure. Both are possible, I'm sure Ryanair is doing an investigation into it and will eventually figure something out.
