Thanks for the video. Circling approaches are always very interesting. I like to fly the LDA X Rwy 8 (or Rwy 26) approach to Juneau, Alaska. I can recommend the Milk Run from Alaska Airlines anyway, since they fly to many of the small airports with B737 and a lot of hand flying and low altitudes. That is always very challenging. Maybe that would be something for a stream too.

Thanks for all the information this is easily the best channel! Also why do we need to recycle FD and for what else we need to recycle it?
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 жыл бұрын
When the FD's no longer give you usable information you want to get rid of them. You could also just turn them off, but if you did so you would loose them after a go around. To avoid that we recycle them.

I've been looking for the approaches I see going into KCVG and none of the charts represent what I see in the real world... I think this is going to be the thing I've been looking for

Thanks for this! I was trying a circling approach to runway 26 in the 737-700 yesterday at PAJN using the LDA X RWY 8 instrument approach. It is a tough one because the instrument approach is offset. Winds often come from the west here, so it is fairly common. If possible, I'd love if you could take a look at this chart for me. It says circling minimums for cat c aircraft is 3340 MSL (3315 AGL) with a max speed of 140. Also no circling north of the runway. I found myself WAY too high to properly perform the circling approach. I also found the circuit way too tight with the terrain around and felt it would be nearly impossible to do. Any hints or suggestions on things I am missing? I am new to circling approaches.
@stephanweber1168
@stephanweber1168 2 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean. I also fly this approach often but also have trouble circling to Rwy 26. I have seen videos here on YT where they are flying south parallel to Rwy 08 and then circling to Rwy 26. It looks so easy but sure requires a lot of training.
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 жыл бұрын
Looks like an interesting approach indeed. Generally you'd need to fly 99 seconds downwind in order to be on profile at this circling height. Looks like there might be terrain close by though. I have not actually tried this approach yet, but the speed restriction of 140kt might come just from this terrain issue. How close do you get to the terrain when you fly the downwind with 140kt for 99 seconds?
@Jer29
@Jer29 2 жыл бұрын
@@A330Driver in fact, I had 99 seconds planned for the downwind but got much too afraid with the gwps warnings blaring ha! I got scared, cancelled the circle, made an evasive manouvre and landed, likely illegally, with a 10 knot tailwind on 08. I did see a video of a 737 from the cockpit circling on the same approach, but they were way below circling minimums and were very tight. Perhaps they had special authorization. I'm just curious because I was way too close to terrain after about 40 seconds of downwind time so the approach, to me, seems impossible. Thanks for taking time to respond.

Such a nice Video!! I love your explanations👍🏼👍🏼 But I have one question: In which situations the circling approach is being used?
@A330Driver
@A330Driver Жыл бұрын
When there is no instrument approach available into the landing direction.
@Ronald9540
@Ronald9540 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the explanation! Something I’ve never understood, why would you fly a circling approach? Funchal has various approaches into 28, so why not go for one of those?
@Fcreceptor
@Fcreceptor 2 жыл бұрын
Usually for high tailwind component, temporary obstacles, or other undesirable factors that apply to the approach plate for the straight in approach. Circle to land approaches are typically not used by airlines in the US and I believe some of them don’t allow them. That’s not to say you won’t fly a downwind and base in VFR conditions with vectors however. They carry a risk that isn’t necessary nowadays with modern navigation and better published approaches. That Learjet at Gillespie airfield a while back is just one example of a circle to land resulting in a crash that was totally avoidable.
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 жыл бұрын
The main reason for circlin approaches is because the terrain or other factors (other would usually be mainly political factors) does not allow any instrument approach on such runway. Madeira is something special again as it's not a circling but a visual approach to runway 05. An example of an airport where terrain prohibits any instrument approaches in one landing direction is Comiso, LICB. Due to high terrain runway 23 does not have any instrument approaches and a circling approach must be carried out.
@IIBL4D3II
@IIBL4D3II 2 жыл бұрын
Mainly the difference between a visual approach and a circling approach is that the last one is made ad the end of an instrument approach whereas a visual approach would actually substitute it. a circling is done maintaining visual sight of the runway wherever a sraight in approach in not possible due to osbacles, absence of nav aids and other factors. :)

Hi there. Thanks for all your content! Perhaps I'm wrong, but as I understand it, a circle to land can technically include landing on a runway other than the opposite of the approach runway. Is that something you ever do?
@SimpleTakeoffs

Thank you Emmanuel! Wondering, would we also add half the headwind component too, since we’d have a slower ground speed in that case and wouldn’t want to turn base early?
@A330Driver
@A330Driver 2 жыл бұрын
Yes - however it is very unlikely to have headwind here since the wind at circling altitudes is *usually* similar to the ground level and if you had a headwind on downwind that'd mean tailwind on landing which would make the circling approach itself rather unlikely to be done in first place. However for the unlikely case that it does happen, yes, you need to add half the headwind.

Hello, thanks for the nice Video, trying to reproduce 🙂 But 2 Questions: 1. i dont get where the 4.2 miles from the Thr comes from ( 1:11 in the Video ) ... i see the Obastacle clearence of 1400 , but where again can i see the 4.2 NM ?? ( sorry ) 1. how have you entered the RW28 FIX in the Fix Page ? I tried this in Prosim, but after entering RW28 in the Fix Page, the Point appears in the middle of the RWY and not at the end ( where i expect it ) Thanks Matthias
@A330Driver
@A330Driver Жыл бұрын
Hi Matthias, 1) It's a regulatory requirement, you won't find it in the chart but you'd have to check the AIP. 2) That's a bug in the ProSim then, if you enter RW28 it should mark the threshold of that runway, not the middle, the airport or anything else.
@StarflightVirtual
@StarflightVirtual Жыл бұрын
Hello, Thanks a lot, will tell that to Prosim, lets see what excuse they answers 🙂 But whyt i wonder a bit is this: Lets say you fly from A to B. A has a Runway 10/28, but B has also a Runway 10/28 🙂 I know, the chance is very low, but what if i enter RW28 in the Fix Page. How can the FMC know which one i mean ??? 🙂 The RWY28 from the Departure or from the Destination ? 🙂 Matthias
