Turn up the sound on your laptop or mobile device and soak up the atmosphere of the #queenoftheskies Boeing 747-400 spooling up to takeoff thrust!
3 different engine types were fitted on the Boeing 747-400 - and in this film you can hear the sound of all 3 types - from the same spot at #londonheathrowairport Runway 27 Right. They all sound completely different - but which sounds best??
We've got first up, the General Electric CF6-80C2B1F on #virginatlantic 747 G-VROM "Barbarella" as she makes her last appearance at Heathrow on 3rd October 2020 heading for a new life with Atlas Air in the States;
Followed by the Pratt and Whitney PW4056 powering G-UNET, #OneAir #Cargo filmed this week at Heathrow and finally:
The Rolls Royce RB211-524G- powering #britishairways #queenoftheskies G-CIVR, seen operating the BA 195/callsign Speedbird 26E to Houston on 25 October 2019.

I love the sound and rumble of the RB211. Rolls Royce engines just have amazing sounds.

Unquestionably RB211 - simply gives me those powerful ‘Yeeeeeesss’ goosebumps!

Unpopular opinion but I have to say the CF6. The Rolls-Royce sounds really good but since I basically grew up with the Lufthansa 747-400s it‘s the sound that immediately comes to my mind when I think about the 747

RB211 hands down, that snarl after she spools up, the whistle as she passes and the roar seconds behind that.

0:30 Virgin Atlantic 747-400 the loudest General Electric CF6 engine ever. 2:48 but the Rolls Royce RB211 is also the loudest engine ever😊😊😊

Did Boeing 747 debut with the Rolls Royce engine? I remember as a kid hearing that very distinct engine sound sound when the jumbo jet started flying at YVR.

@ebusnit hi it was actually Pratt and Whitney who were the first if I remember correctly. Pan Am were the first to fly the 747 across “the pond” - and their aircraft were fitted with P and W power plant. The Rolls Royce power plant appeared on the BA 747 200 series in the mid 70s - but you’re right; it is a sound I always associate with 747s. 👌✈️

CF6 sound is the sound of 747-400 for me. RB211 and sounds great but i think that belongs 757. Pratt & whitney sounds nice too and I like that being ”classic” choice for 747.

If my old try Spitfire that I used to drive, while I was in, University is any indication of how the Rolls-Royce engine will perform with regard to maintenance, I would go with I’m comingoratt or GE

The RR engines are loud. The quietist seem to be GE. However, may mean nothing if you consider maintenance who is better I don’t know.

Why did BA put the engines of the 757 on their 747

@LuisHasABird Hi Luis they were the same type but different thrust rating - at the time it was part of the BA strategy to buy Boeing and have commonality between the Rolls Royce engine types (767/757) and 747.
