Ain't that the truth. I always wanted to be in aviation, but I took a different path in IT/Software Dev route. I absolutely take it for granted, but I work from home and I get to wake up pretty much when I want to. I Schedule my day around my work that is at a convenience to me and everyone is cool with it. My job has afforded me a lot of cool shit, but part of me misses just "being out there" and doing stuff. Grass is always greener, of course, part of me would kill just to go around the world and fly planes; how awesome would that be to do?

All the people I helped get from one area of the world to another, all the mail, packages, loved ones, etc. It can sound a little stupid, but it's one part I loved about working in the transportation industry. I used to work the ramp for Alaska Airlines, and I know the feeling. There's something incredibly satisfying about the entire process of turning aircraft, and knowing that your effort made a difference to a lot of people, even if they don't know it. Trapped in a hotel on a 90-minute leash of uncertainty seems fairly frustrating. However, it is so exciting when you are flying with such incredible views ! Thank you for letting us tag along.

Per the book it's 90 minute report but on R2 at the same company as Kelsey I've always been assigned flying the next day or so. Sure, you could be given that short call, but it's not very common on the 747.
@MBSteinNL
@MBSteinNL Ай бұрын
@@burnn3 Wouldn't the 90-minutes requirement be in case a fast swap is needed (e.g sick pilot on short notice or a drunk pilot, or other reasons why a new pilot would be needed)?
@fuhkerz
@fuhkerz Ай бұрын
@@burnn3How does that work with rest periods though? If it's a long haul trip I'd figure they'd need to give you at least 8hrs so you could definitely get a full rest in before the flight. I'm sure there's something simple I'm missing but I'm just trying to figure out when I would sleep if I always had to be ready to fly within 90 minutes.
@TheRealScooterGuy
@TheRealScooterGuy Ай бұрын
@@fuhkerz -- As you might have noticed, it was 90 minutes notice, but then he flew (as a passenger) to another city, and had time to rest (sort of), and then when he boarded his plane, he wasn't on the first shift, so he had even more time to sleep. It's a lousy schedule, but it worked. I'm uncertain how many snacks he managed to score though.
@fuhkerz
@fuhkerz Ай бұрын
@TheRealScooterGuy Yeah I assumed it doesn't always work out like that and sometimes the flight they need you for is much closer. I also thought relief crews usually had to be present for the takeoff regardless but I guess that could be airline dependent.

Kelsey, I love this format. It's a great respite from your (also great) "reaction" videos (I hate calling them that, but it's kind of what they are). I love seeing the day-to-day experiences you have and the glimps into what this "glamorous" (to some) life is really about. Even if it wasn't extreme or hair-raising or emotionally charged (which, in general, is what gets YT clicks), it's great and we want more! Keep the blue side up.

It's amusing to see the "every-day" monotony of flying, even thought it sounds exotic on the surface for the layman. It's the same thing truck drivers go through, especially changing from season to season and talking about cross-country locations as if they were only just across town. But, what's really cool is that you still think about those occasions when you're involved in something different, Kelsey, and appreciate the future stories you'll have for whomever. I was too old and behind the age curve to do anything commercially with my flying but had fun on the ga side of things. Thanks for continuing to take us along on these journeys, even though the rest schedule is far from ideal.

You are part of the story! No big event goes off without so SO many people doing their job, their part. You’re not on the “credits” but without you doing your job, no way that concert happens. Same as the roadies, lumpers, and ramp crews! Your bird doesn’t fly without the dueler, the ground marshals, the tug operator. You know that. They’re all part of the story, whether they know it or not, whether they get credit or not. Even down to the people that built the gear you’re flying to AU.

@4:57 THAT IS SO TYPICAL! As pilots we are just so used to rushing and getting things done, just to wait some more... That anticipatory stress is so recognizable. That on top of the: "Oh I have 5 more hours"... "I Have 4 more hours"... "I have 3 more hours"... The better the sleep in the bunks!
