To make matters worse, dad’s a Republican and mom’s a Democrat…he had a large but close family who lived on a farm, very poor, but always in church, she grew up in the city with a bratty brother 9 years younger than her & parents who were atheists. Right before they got married, conditions were set: he told her their kids would be raised in church (thank you, dad) and she said there would be no drinking or hitting (her dad was an abusive alcoholic). How they’ve stayed together is a mystery! Dad is 91 & mom is 86 with 4 kids, 6 grandchildren, & 11 great-grandchildren….so they’ve done pretty well IMO!😊❤

Like 74Gear, I was a 747 pilot. Flew Navy nine years then commercial for another 31 years. A funny story from when I was newly hired at the airline back in 1985. Smoking was still very big in those days although limited to cigarettes. A crusty old captain was flying his 727 from Seattle to Minneapolis when a flight attendant calls up front. She reports that a very obnoxious guy in the smoking section has lit up a big cigar and refuses to put it out. So the captain announces over the PA that this dude better put out the cigar or the aircraft will divert to the nearest airport (which happened to be Fargo, ND) and he will be removed from the aircraft. Unhappily, no cooperation from the passenger who continues to smoke his stogie. The captain radios ahead to Fargo that his aircraft will be landing there and this passenger will be put off. He also has the station agent call up his counterpart with the only other airline with flights out of Fargo (United Airlines) and asks could they please not honor this dude's ticket. End of story: fat cigar man is stranded in Fargo and forced to rent a car to get back to Minneapolis.

Excellent point about smoking, Captain! Apropos this particular video and putting up with things, as a non-smoker I just had to put up with smoking, for years, while flying. The worst was when I was in First Class, non-smoking, and it happened to be one row in front of the standard class smoking section! There was essentially no difference between my seat and being smack dab in the smoking section. Every time I fly, I am grateful that smoking is no longer allowed. Common sense, really, but I do understand--back in the day, 75% of Americans smoked!!

We were waved forward and I felt it appropriate to apologize for the old ladies poor behaviour. She smiled, looked at and spoke to my wife asking whether she thought that in an emergency would I be the kind of person to help people off the aircraft. My arm still hurts 2 weeks later from falling on the seat in front though 😂 next time I’m afraid I’ll have to be a mean person and wake her up 😕 I don’t want to risk hurting someone, or breaking my arm mid-flight. Once we taxied to the runway, the aircraft stopped, and shut down the engines to a final deicing. A guy behind me stated quite loudly, if the pilot is too scared to fly, we need another pilot. Apparently the flight attendant called the captain and he stopped just a few feet from the gate. He would not move until that dude was made to go back to his seat and fasten his seatbelt. He refused at first, then the captain got in the intercom and said this plane will not move an inch unless ALL passengers are seated with their seatbelt on. The whole plane full of passengers started yelling at this dude and finally he went back to his seat all mumbling. After he was seated, the plane traveled about 10 feet to the gate. I wasn't in a hurry so I thought it was funny how the entire plane full of passengers were yelling at him and he was trying to make his point, but not a soul was having it.

@@vidpie That's a shame. Last time I was on a flight where we were running a bit late, the captain did the same and I'm glad to say that we all complied (I was at my destination) and let them out. It's no wonder there are serious actions taken when a passenger makes trouble... the comfort and convenience of the journey largely depends on us. Well... it would also be nice to have leg room. But yeah... passengers being decent makes all the difference. I was once running late for a flight with my two daughters, and the Southwest flight attendants had made it their business to set aside three seats together, with the courteous compliance of the other passengers, since I was unable to board early due to my own miscalculation. I really appreciated it because one daughter was 16 but the other was 8 and has issues with anxiety. And really, the 16-year-old would have been uneasy sitting apart, too! The seats were at the back by the bathroom, and I considered sitting by the head entirely acceptable if it made the other folks more willing to let us have the row. And I learned to budget more time to get to the airport... anyway, it all shows what some human decency can do for the whole experience.

Can we talk? I'm a retired airline pilot with 50 years flying experience. I would like to share some "inside" information with you. I have a theory why a good number of people become unruly on an airplane. There's fear of flying. There's a substance usage factor (alcohol and or drugs) and, what no one speaks about, is claustrophobia. You are jammed into a tube, sitting in small seats with little elbow or leg room, without water and it's probably hot within the cabin. The cabin altitude is about 8,300 feet which brings on a bit of hypoxia which can be accelerated by drinking booze or taking drugs. Let me tell you what goes on. The flight attendants are keyed to give you service as fast as possible for a couple of reasons. The leg may be short and they only have so much time to get the service done and or they want to get the service over asap so they can goof off. Their crew seat is by the cabin door which isn't heated. It's freezing cold and that makes them cold. It's like clockwork. Once the service is over "DING" our intercom goes off with one of the FA complaining that she's cold. They want us to warm up the cabin for THEM when in fact, the temp is ok in the back. We warm up the cabin and now you, the passenger, are hot, people are farting, coughing, sneezing, you are cramped, and thirsty. The guy in front of you rams his chair full back putting his headrest into your lap. At this point, any normal human being would go nuts. I'm a f-ing pilot and I HATE riding in back. It's a nightmare. My sympathy goes out to you. Having said that, you MUST be careful. Today, the FA's are spring loaded to get you booted from the airplane. Some deserve it and some don't. I STRONGLY suggest not going sideways with ANY crew member. Just gut it out. No, it's not easy for me to say. I'm just trying to keep you from being booted from the plane or worse. Suggestions: Bring your own water and your own food. Dress comfortably. Try to be considerate and tolerant of others. Yes, I know some people are inconsiderate a-holes, but just like a rude driver, don't engage in road rage and just let them go. If you confront some jackass chances are you will get into trouble too. Suggestion. During cabin service or getting close to destination, the FA's will ask the cockpit to turn the seatbelt sign on. They sometimes do this to keep you in your seat while they are conducting service or prepping the cabin for arrival. My suggestion is to keep track of your arrival time. We begin our descent about 20 to 30 minutes out so, make your restroom visit, leg stretch, etc. before we begin descent. If you try to get up with the seatbelt sign on, the FA's are going to be in your face. I'm just trying to help you avoid confrontation with anyone. In today's day and age, if you are a trouble maker on an airplane, you are going to get it big time. If we are forced to land, it could be anywhere and you could be trapped there. You will most definitely be arrested and it's a FEDERAL CRIME. Again, don't act up on an airplane. Surely you can behave yourself and tolerate others for a few hours. If not, I suggest taking the bus, car, train, boat, etc. If you are worried about Climate Change, I would ride a bike and not fly. Of course, if you ride your bike you will be consuming oxygen, expelling CO2 and other gasses. You will need precious water resources. You will have to stop for food. That food you are consuming all has an effect on global warming. I.E., irrigation, wrapping, transportation, energy required for cooking, waste left over, etc. Hey, if you are that wound up over global warming then let's get real. I hope this helps. I say again, I hate flying in the back of the airplane too.

I fly a lot for work, I'm pretty thin because I like to ride and run a lot. I was sat next to a large passenger a few years ago, they were middle seat and I was at the window. Instead of kicking up a fuss I waited until we were airborne and raised the arm between us, leaned towards the window and told them to enjoy the extra space. The smile was worth it and we had a great laugh for the rest of the flight. Not sure why people need to make mountains out of molehills these days, it makes no sense. It's like in traffic where people go out of their way to stop people changing lanes instead of slowing down and letting someone in. We're talking seconds out of your life, or in the case of my flight it was a few hours accommodating someone else so they're more comfortable. At the end of the day our flight was epic, we laughed and told jokes and had a great time for the few hours we shared seats. I'd much prefer that, at the expense of a tiny bit of comfort, than to be "that person" that always makes other people hate them. Share the world, there are some awesome people out there, and you might just be missing out on some good times.
@terripebsworth96234 ай бұрын
Two BIG thumbs up to that. The literal definition of good manners is "to make others around you feel comfortable." On a recent long flight from Asia to the US, I was seated next to a young man (mid 20s ish) was made no eye contact with anyone as he furiously typed away on his laptop. He had a very serious stoic kind of personality. Something funny happened (forgot what, but I think it was a ridiculous onboard announcement), I burst out laughing, looked at the young guy next to me and made a related crack. Well, the broke to ice. We spent the next 10 hours chatting about geopolitics. That stoic young man was headed to West Point for officers training. As soon as he said West Point, I though, "Ah... his stoic overly mature mindset and personality make him perfectly suited for such a career." Anyway, just a bit of civilty and normal social behavior (ie say hi to your fellow traveler) can create a new friendship or at least make the flight a lot more interesting and enjoyable. People REALLY need to learn to be civil again. And that includes flight attendants and ground staff.

Back in 2020, covid era, there was all those protests going on. Me being a college student from new jersey, i was super politically charged, liberal, anti cop etc etc. I was flying into Portland. The person I was sat next to was a Portland police officer. If you remember, Portland had huge anti cop defund this defund that protests. We were chatting, that’s how i came to know he was a cop. Despite my beliefs at the time, we had an enlightening conversation about our views and experiences. That was actually what helped me step out of the tunnel visioned politics that the covid era perpetuated. Cuz I interacted with someone and learned about their side of things. And he was a great guy, just because he was a cop didnt mean he supported racial profiling and violence. I actually felt bad, he endured a lot of violence during the protests. I think the isolation during covid and the internet culture at the time really caused people to lean very hard into their own black and white version of things, which resulted in them seeing themselves as the main character, the rest of the world blurring away. Idk im not a psychologist. But i think people should be more open to people with different beliefs. And if not open, just ignore it. People are different and thats what makes our world interesting. No need to be best friends, definitely no need to fight and argue. But personally i love meeting and learning about people. Covid era flights felt so nice and close knit. We all were craving some connection and socialization.

They don't say thank you, they tell the people to hurry up and give them THEIR food, they complain about the food. This church group always brings a big spread of good food that has to cost them a lot of money. ( Not to mention the time and effort to prepare and transport the meals. Hundreds of meals.) I tend to be in window seats, and I’m rarely in a hurry to get off the plane. It doesn’t make any sense to me. However, I was recently on a delayed flight, on which the crew announced that some of the passengers had tight connections, and that the rest of us should remain seated while those passengers disembark. The people on the plane behaved themselves. The other time I saw people sit quietly while the plane was parked was when the crew announced that the plane was carrying the remains of a fallen soldier, and that we should remain seated until the remains were taken off the flight..

I'm a big guy. I try to make up for it by being a good seat partner, helping move food/drinks to the people in my row, making sure I'm attentive in when they want to get up to use the lavatory, helping with overhead bags before/after the flight, etc. I've never had an issue with my row partners. I also couldn't imagine wearing clothes that show my opinion on a dangerous topic like politics onto a flight. Even if the flight is only an hour, why make that time any more uncomfortable than it already is. I wouldn't bring up any topic like that on a flight either, because again, why do it? There are so many more pleasant topics that you could talk about.

Just last month on a flight from Sacramento to Los Angeles I had a Karen sit next to me and become triggered by my hat, which as a veteran , it displayed my group patch. Nothing political, nothing offensive. She seemed to think I was a “gun nut” .. in her words. I only said one thing to her .. “ lady, I’m in this seat for around an hour and I don’t want to talk to you, be bothered by you, or hear your opinions. You have no idea what you’re referring to.” She literally went ballistic, and within a couple of minutes was removed from the flight. Flight attendant brought the co pilot back, he made the call. Probably a good thing for at least one reason, her fat ass probably threw the weight and balance off of the 737.. the autopilot would have been struggling all during the flight. Humor. Thank you Southwest for saving me the absolute displeasure of sitting next to a liberal mental case. By the way, I am a gun enthusiast. Not quite a nut.

100% agree. No need for the non sense. I was on a flight into Montreal in February and a lady, in seat 1A, decided she needed to light up in the forward lav 20 minutes from landing. Talk about massive inconvenience. Montreal AARF decided we were coming to a full stop on the runway, we were evacuating on the runway, and then being busses to the terminal. We then had to wait for our carryon bags to be brought to us before proceeding to immigration and customs. What should have been less than 30 minutes turned into a 2 hour ordeal. It was crazy. She was banned from flying any US airline, fined 10,000.00, arrested by Montreal Police, and deported back to NY that same evening. All for a smoke.

I live in Palo Alto, California. It's the heart of the Silicon Valley and within the sociopolitical bubble of the San Francisco Bay Area. Several years ago, I went to a popular local deli to buy some sandwiches to-go. As usual, the line was pretty long. And, as usual, I continued to just look at my phone while waiting in line (while hoping that they didn't run out of Dutch Crunch bread). However, I did notice a middle-aged woman kind of looking at me. After about ten minutes, the lady asked me, "What does your hat mean?" I was wearing a Philadelphia Phillies baseball cap. It's red and has the stylized "P" in the front with a Major League Baseball logo on the side. It even says, "Philadelphia Phillies" on the bottom of the back near the hair line. So, I told her that it was a "Phillies cap." She asked, "What are 'Phillies?'" I explained that it is a major league baseball team from the city of Philadelphia. She then laughed. She told me that she thought that it was some sort of "Trump cap." If it was, she continued, she was going to ask me to leave the deli. She was smiling but completely serious. I was flabbergasted. I don't own a Trump cap. I've never owned one. Moreover, this woman doesn't own the deli. She doesn't work at the deli. She was just another customer (like me) who was waiting for a sandwich. So, I smiled and joked that "I left my Trump cap at home" because "there are so many left-wing fascists out there who try to publicly shame anyone wearing such a hat on the basis of crazy media-inspired stereotypes and generalizations of millions of Americans.” This lady smiled and looked amusingly bewildered. She left with her sandwich unaware that I had called out her shocking level of intolerance. I would absolutely HATE to sit with someone like that on a plane.

Years ago, when you could still smoke on a plane, a "gentleman" boarded the plane, sat in his seat, and immediately lit a cigarette. The flight attendant told him he could only smoke once we were in the air, and the captain turned off the no-smoking sign. The "gentlemen" informed the flight attendant that he had just lit the cigarette and had no intention of putting it out. The attendant immediately called the flight deck - I applauded and cheered what happened next. In a commanding voice, the captain approached the defiant passenger and said, "You're off my plane!" There was no discussion, no bargaining-off my plane-period. He walked away, and the gate team removed him from the flight. As I sat there, I relished in the comfort of knowing we had a captain who was willing to take immediate action when something could interfere with the flight. As an IFR Private pilot myself, I ensure my passengers feel that same confidence level. Great video; thank you for sharing.
