I think Bobcat actually has the correct idea on electrification here... The reason for the low run times is that the conventional thought on electrification is to replace the gas motor with electric and keep the rest of the machine the same. Bobcat decided to replace a lot of the hydraulics with Electric Linear Actuators. This means you only use power when you are moving the tools instead of having a constant draw to keep a hydraulic pump running.

They could take a lot from the electric forklift play book on these. The hydraulic motor doesn't turn unless steering or hydraulics are commanded and typically runs for a short period after steering. For steering it runs at a lower speed and has an accumulator to boost steering when first commanded, for hydraulics it goes much faster. They could use the same drive system as the diesel tractor to maybe keep the motor from drawing so much on take off. Drive motors are by far the largest draw in the system on AC drive systems.

@@TwoAMBlacktop Right. Linear actuators are obviously the most efficient choice but then you have to swap out every hydraulic implement with a new one. A MUCH simpler and easier design change is to just switch from open center hydraulics (Which both the Solectrac and the Case model shown here use) with closed center hydraulics (Which is the system you're describing from the electric forklifts). Closed center works just like you describe above: The pump runs until it has built pressure and shuts off. When a valve opens, causing pressure to drop, the pump kicks back on and runs just fast enough to maintain the preset pressure and shuts off once the flow stops again. Tons of diesel tractors have closed center hydraulics so I'm not sure why they are choosing to use the less energy efficient design on the electric tractors, other than cost savings I suppose.

My New Holland dealer is closed on Sundays so I put in an email inquiry. I’m betting this is gonna be expensive. I still have my GMC 3500 6.6L Diesel but my daily driver is electric and I will never go back. To plug in and charge up at home is so easy. Similarly I’m tired of filling 5 gallon diesel cans for our tractor. From day 1 wanted electric but a machine like this didn’t exist. I’m so excited by this news! Thanks for bring this to us.

As of early 2024, I can tell you that our Case IH rep who is handling these for large accounts has stated that production is limited, targeted to certain regions (ie California), and mostly for specific industries. This isn't currently intended to replace it's conventional diesel counterpart. We were told retail price is around $150,000.

This is one of the rare occasions where battery weight is a good thing assuming it's positioned correctly on the tractor, such as a low center of gravity to help prevent tipping. front end bouncing because it's too light, etc...

Online specs say it has a 110kWh battery pack and they advertise a 10-80% recharge time of 1 hour with the DC fast charge. Assuming you're only using that middle 70% of the battery pack between charges, you need to average just under 20kW of total power output to achieve that advertised 4 hour run time assuming no other losses. So keep your power utilization inline with a standard subcompact tractor and you'll be ok. I really can't see the value proposition for something like this. It's bound to cost a lot more than the diesel equivalent and it's going to have lower productivity. About all it has going for it in my opinion is that it's "neat".

True, but that is how ev cars started. Short range, now some EVs offer over 300 miles of range. Next will be different batteries altogether that will shoot range / run time way up! I think it’ll be an excellent feeding tractor. I’d love this, it’s plugged in during the winter so it’s always warm and ready to go, go out plow the driveway, make sure cattle have a path to the water trough, drop some bales of hay, maybe go fix some fence the storm messed up. It would be absolutely perfect for that. Could rake a small hay field in the summer time.

Tim thank you for this video. I think it will be interesting when CNH brings this tech to their big Quad Tracs and their large harvesters. If they're able to design a way to make the batteries swappable (much like electric forklifts swap batteries). But seeing this 75 hp electric model they are offering is wonderful!

Very interesting with both offerings here. One of the big selling points I see with electric machinery is when someone is around a noise sensitive area like a nursing home. I'd have to think comparing with Solectrac's new eUT+ might be how both of them get graded.

I enjoy keeping up with new technology. We run New Holland at Railhead Ranch and have a Workmaster 75. I love it. Absolutely intrigued by the electric T4. I am curious to see how quickly the duty cycle is improved and time to charge is reduced. Also, when battery life stats are available and the cost to replace batteries is released, we will have a good idea of feasibility. Initially, I think these new toys will be cost prohibitive for everyday Joes, but there are still some great advantages. Worth it to be an early adopter???? We’ll depend on pros like you to keep us informed. Thank you for the detailed and informative videos.

I was around electric fork lifts in the mid 70’s. The batteries were large and dangerous as you changed them. We also called them silent death. In a noisy a factory, they would slip up on you, the operator would slam the forks on the floor behind you. They were also down quite a bit. There is still a long way to go for these tractors to make them practical as you have shown with your loaner. But they are coming…….. Thanks for showing us this one.

Where I work all of our fork lifts and picker lifts are electric. The batteries are also as you describe, needing the operator to top off the water every few days so they work properly. But the building isn't a factory so all of the lifts are easy to hear.

I do find it hard that the large acre farmer who needs to work 8-12 hrs ( or more) a day will find these useful. However time will tell and I will be interested to see how they sell. I was a KZbin channel featuring a young family who live on an off-grid farm. They have a large tractor that they just use occasionally, not for intensive field work. I couldn't help thinking that one of these electric tractors would be ideal for them, as battery life would not be an issue and they are already generating their own electricity with solar panels. An electric tractor would work for me on my small farm as well, but would be too expensive to justify the purchase. I think that will be the problem with adoption. If you are using a tractor enough to pay the cost of an electric tractor, you would need to work it for far more hours than the battery would support.

Wow, that thing operates amazingly! So fast and quiet! I'm holding out as long as I can for an electric tractor (would prefer something the size of the Solectrac - but as you've shown, it simply isn't as good as the 1025R). If it were me doing the engineering, I would run an electric motor and locking diff for the rear wheels, another for the front wheels, and another for the hydraulic pump. The PTO would either be another motor, or potentially combined with a clutch on the hydraulic pump motor. Using one big electric motor and using clutches and transmissions is old thinking. I'm also curious about that DC fast charging - is it using CCS? So you could take it to a normal vehicle charging station to fast charge?

I’m sure there are plenty of uses for these outside of row farming, and I say that as a partial owner of a good sized farm with an JD 8R among other equipment. For instance, it would be a great tractor at stock shows/rodeos to haul hay, clean out pens, etc. Or a farm that primarily makes money from tourism (Pumpkins, Corn Maze, etc).

I disagree that it is useful at a working farm even if it is tourist focused. 75 hp is beyond what most hobby farming would use. 4 hr run time (factory specs) would mot be achieved in my opinion. Then add in down time for charging, in my opinion makes it a huge toy, not a working piece of equipment.

Scratch the 1 hour charge. Needing 3 phase for the 1 hour charger will rule out many farming locations. So 4 hrs of working time (probably less) for 5 hrs charging time. It is too large for cleaning hog shed, chicken houses and most horse barns. Remember you typically have stalls at 90 degrees from entrance to barn, for turning clearance lots of wasted space. Skid steers will still rule.

I think it would be a very useful tractor for some. To me I think it would be a cool addition here if I was looking to spend that much on a tractor. I would like to upgrade to a tractor of the 70-80HP, and where I only use them at any one time for 3 hours tops it would be a perfect addition. Just not sure about the safety aspects, such as fire. I am thinking they still have not overcome some of the downfalls of electric vehicles, such as overheating, and run times. But I am sure with time these things may be overcome, as they were with cordless tools. As for farm use, I am thinking they may be useful as the yard tractor, with the loader, but may not be a very good field tractor as yet, with the run times at 5 hours, but who knows, maybe the hobby farmers may love these.

I’d be surprised if there are safety issues. The battery management systems are so sophisticated now. Also they are liquid cooled compared to the early hybrid car batteries. The media blows up every EV fire even though they are significantly less likely to catch fire compared to gas vehicles. To be fair, this isn’t in the market yet so we don’t 100% know yet.

First. New technology is always interesting. I know batteries lose charging speed capacity and total capacit over time. Has industry talked about this? Also replacement battery costs? There are many areas where electrification is done internally to conventially powered gas/diesel you wouldn't see unless you ask about those changes.

Li-Ion batteries loose some capacity quickly but the degradation flattens out and they do work a very long time. Most electric cars aren't even close to the charge cycles. The same style of battery cells (18650) you can find in some American built electric cars is what I have in my robotic lawn mower (Husqvarna 430X 2017), on it's 7th season and since it can do about 6 charges per day, unlike how you typically use a car. It's the original battery pack in it with 3,100 charges cycles and it still runs like 80-90% of the original time (which was a lot more than the spec told). With a car that would be around a million miles for a long range BEV worth of charge cycles. Similarly these tractors I guess aren't the main tractors doing field work around the clock, so it's use is more similar to a personal car than a semi truck or so where such long mileage actually happens. So asking for how much battery replacement is will be like asking how much the replacement of the entire diesel engine is in a tractor - no one asks that about a new machine they buy. Then, all machines aren't created equally some battery packs in different vehicles or tools might perform bad and have a failure. But the capacity of the cells is really good even for frequent charging of batteries. People often compare to their phone which lives the worst way for a battery, one shouldn't extrapolate from those.

I think this machine is a big step forward. Just replacing the petrol engine with and electric motor makes a good fist step and makes it work correctly with other equipment. Another person commented on increasing battery life with electric linear actuators and that might be a good step forward. While I like my Diesel, a good electric might serve my needs if I were to run a generator on Wood Gas to charge the tractor. In this manner I would not have to worry about diesel prices or availability and the system would be substantially independent. It is an interesting idea for me and my goals. (What I believe in is "DRILL BABY DRILL" but we are not doing that right now) Given that I just like equipment, if I had the money, I would have steam tractors, old tractors, new tractors, 1950s 4hp riding mower, robot mowers, Toro 5910 and 580 D, 22ft pto towed grooming mower, small excavator, two wheel tractors and equipment..... 😀🙃🙂 to the critics: this is not a list of what is sensible!! I like all these machines and more just because....

If I were a farmer, I would expect at least 12 ours of tough use and 12 hours for a full charge at least. Getting stuck in a muddy field with no way to get back to the barn sounds like a disaster in the making. At least diesel can be brough to a tractor in the field and it can be fired up with little time lost.

I think the run time needs to greatly improve on the larger tractors. Dragging a generator around when your miles away from a electrical hook up just isn’t going to always work for a farmer. Four hours on a riding mower to mow your lawn is a lot more acceptable.

It is a cool concept. Especially for running inside the barn and around livestock. So I contacted CNH and asked a few questions. They did not have an answer for any as usual. Just "ask your dealer" I explained in order for people to get onboard with this electric agenda, I need to see real data on my ROI (return on investment) I asked how much the battery replacement will cost in the event it needs to be replaced, seeing as how there is only a 3 year battery warranty. And how long is the expected life of the battery? With my diesel's I know exactly how much it costs to fill the fuel tank, how many gallons per hour it burns, and the cost of all replacement parts. But these electric tractors and vehicles, they like to hide those facts from you. So think I'll pass on this one.

A 120kw charger will need 250amps at 480v 3-phase. This is the biggest issue I see with anything EV/ET right now is the infrastructure required to support these machines. A charger to support "fast" DC charging is going to cost allot of money, and that's if you have 3-phase service and then you will have to deal with the cost of electricity at that power level. Until the energy density of the batteries reach that of diesel fuel, it's a very costly venture.

I really would like one sized like the solectrac, but I want it to have a cab with heat and ac, and I want to be able to order it less pto Also, the solectrac would run me like $75,000 and I can buy Kubota bx or John deere 1 series for 1/3 of the price. I would rather hustle used vegetable oil than run electric for that price point, I’m more excited for the landini rex4 Electra, that one’s gonna be a hybrid. Got a landini dealership maybe 20 miles away from my house

The 25hp subcompact from New Holland (and Case now) is not just a rebranded LS like you keep saying. It is manufactured by LS and so they are very similar. However, the tractors are manufactured to CNH specifications so there are differences which actually make them better machines than the LS. IMO.

But just look at the operators station on the two, they look different and the loader control is in a different spot. I believe the loaders are different too although that could just be on the higher hp tractors. My point is that just because one company manufactures for another, which happens with all the OEMs, it isn't always just a difference in decals and paint color.

You are misinformed (by fake news no doubt). A study based on real-life data submitted by Tesla EV owners between 2013 and 2022 showed that the average battery retains over 90% of its original driving range up to 100,000 miles covered. The range began to drop faster over 125,000 miles but remained above 80%. The cars lost an average of 1% of their range each year for the first seven years. There was a larger decline starting in the eighth year, as the cars racked up higher mileage. Cars with over 200,000 miles covered still had a driving range of around 81-87%, equivalent to over 200 miles.

With dc fast chargers you can charge from 0-80% in 15 minutes, problem is THAT charger costs like $50,000 or more in some cases So if you can’t afford downtime but maybe you like the idea of the electric tractor, you’re probably gonna need one of these commercial style dc dc fast chargers that does 400-1000v charging, 250kw or higher. (I hear there’s already a 400kw one on the market) I would imagine these batteries are probably around 800v. Landini is making the Rex 4 Electra, a plug in hybrid, that might be more your style. It has more horsepower anyway, 120hp.

@@not_me3286 I understand that argument for full EV tractors, but with how much most tractors cost I don’t mind spending the $17,000 to install the charger even if I only charge it when I’m nearby it. Would save money on diesel and I’m all about that. I don’t mind the extra weight of the battery either, since usually I’m on a smaller tractor than most people. There’s diesel hybrids coming out soon, those are what I like, not full EV. Full EV tractors are for a major corporation that can foot the bill to install chargers all over the property. You don’t need to plug in your hybrid tractor all the time, it just helps your efficiency/range when you do. So if you did happen to plug in that day, maybe you’re doing TMR around the dairy barn so you’re right next to the charger, you’d save some on diesel. If you know you gotta Tedder the hay tomorrow, plug in your tractor overnight and you save some on diesel. Full ev tractor would kind of suck if you didn’t have a charger in every single field though, I’m with you on that.

Some of our big grain growers do work 24 hours a day during harvest time, but that is mainly the big headers rather than tractors. They will electrify in time too. Charging regimes are all a matter of equipment and the timing of it. In particular getting great chargers (both DC fast-chargers and AC 50-150 kWh chargers). Much of the base charging will be overnight when mostly tractors sit idle. I reckon the time and money savings on maintenance and servicing of diesel engines will help farmers overcome this eventually.

@@petesig93 carraro srx hybrid and Landini rex 4 Electra (both plug in diesel hybrids) have brought 30 minute charging to orchards and vineyards, and small farms. The 100hp market has 30 minute charge time hybrids, full ev tractors at 1.5 hours. The charger costs $17,000, but hey, I’m just happy the hybrid tech is coming out. As a small farm guy, I’m gonna be able to buy hybrid tractors just next year.

People who are negative towards electric. I get it. I’m also skeptical of electric vehicles/equipment. It’s not because they’re not capable, I just don’t think the technology is to the point where it they can fully compete with ICE powered machines. However, there is a use for these and they do fit peoples needs. This tractor isn’t designed to go out in the fields and pull a plow for 3 days straight. This is meant to be your farms little utility tractor. Moving feed, stacking some bales, plowing snow, etc.

And just like our computers and phones when it starts malfunctioning you just shut it down and restart it! Not sure many farmers are willing to work only 4 hours at a time. Guess you better make sure you stay in fields that are close to an outlet or just put charging stations in fields I guess.

I think there will be a market for these electric’s coming out but it’ll be a small niche market. Anyone that has 10/15+ acre’s that they maintain, these electrics are not going be an answer. With the cost of fuel I’m sure some farmers would love to break free of the fuel tank , these machines just aren’t there yet. I won’t even bother as I need to cut 55+|- acres. If I’m being honest I’d still prefer the diesel (I’m old like you Tim lol, just kidding my friend) and that may be my old school mentality coming out, but its never taken 5 hours to fill a tank when rain is coming and I need to be finished. That small LS/Case is interesting, maybe they finally see profitability with the amount of market Deere commands, and I can definitely see first time buyers getting in the market and buying one, it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out. Maybe Deere lowers prices and add more standard features? Maybe a cab with A/C is in the works for the 1025R? Probably not with only 25HP but I’m thinking all of us consumers will benefit greatly as those 2 giants battle it out in the showroom. Anyway, great video Tim! Either way it still brings competition to the market which is for us as consumers, usually with better pricing and features. Its tough work too, there is no way im gonna run for 3 hours then do nothing for the rest of the day, id never keep on top of it.

I dont understand this market. At 100k plus for a big tractor. Tractor work most times is needed done yesterday. 15to 20 hours in a field is normal and it in harvest you may got well past 24 hours straight. Thsts why we have fuel tanks in the back of the fsrm truck to deliver it right to the feild. I can see it in a smaller version for inside use cleaning barns and such

I am not opposed to an electric tractor. Tractors are tools and most of my power tools are now battery powered. The Selectrac tractor has some real shortcomings in the execution of being a tractor. It looks like Case and New Holland are making a good tractor that just happens to be battery powered. Would I buy an electric tractor? It all comes down to use case. Realistically a 4 hour operating window would work for what I do. As long as the tractor is good at tractor things, which the Selectrac was NOT.

I almost bought an electric one. The problem with them is that you have to replace that battery after 20 years. My diesel will last 80 years. So I’ll have to replace 4 batteries. 😆 that’s more costs.

You don't get the whole picture, you will save a lot of time and money on maintenance and fuel on the electric especially if you have solar panels of your own. The battery can be repurposed as a grid storage for your farm. And no diesel will definitely not last 80 years, government regulations is going to make sure of that, 25 years at best. The planet is going to have to go no emissions in order the reverse the amount of CO2 emitted. Technological leaps in batteries are also in development, production samples of solid state and semi solid state batteries are being tested, these batteries omit some steps of the manufacturing processes that are required in current battery technology which is going to reduce costs significantly in conjunction with the reduction in costs as global demand picks up.

I appreciate the move forward in technology but if you are a working farm then I see 4 hrs as limiting even if you have the fast charger. Work needs done not stop and go. Also if these are running on lithium I just can't be apart of this movement knowing the 2 countries the US buys its lithium from allow 5-90 year old people to hand did the minerals. India and South America country. Average lifespan of these workers is less than 30 yrs old. The compensation is less than a few dollars a day.

We need to put diesel engines back onto what they originally were created for. Peanut oil. Now thats Renewable energy. Electric tractor price is probably expensive. Where these would be really good is if you setup solar panels and charge the tractor. This way you are running it for free. Like another KZbin person (Will Prowse) runs his Tesla for free.

And no, I have not changed my opinion at all about an electrical driven world. I think if they start mandating this stuff around this country our entire electrical grid will simply melt from the insane demand.
