One of the most under appreciated players ever…

Largely because he retired relatively early at 32. Due to knee and or kidney issues. I do know he had both late in his career. If he had had more or less, a long, reasonably healthy career, like Havlicek and Dr J, I truly believe he would be mentioned along with them.

Billy C also did a fine job as a coach leading the 76ers. I remember him keeping up the ball movement by constantly talking to Maurice and Andrew. A nice man, he knew a ton about basketball.

I'm glad that Rick Barry mentioned Cunningham's time in the ABA.

MVP in his 1st year in ABA. Dr J said "he showed what being a superstar is all about."

Billy C will always be remembered to have gotten the 76ers a championship for coaching Dr.J and that group. He was a great coach and should be in the top 5 to ten coaches ever. The NBA didn't have him on that list - because its a racist league with their executives.

Billy jump to the ABA is the main reason. The bitterness lingers by these NBA executives.

@@davanmani556 hate to say it, but it's a factor. Hawkins & Barry get overlooked for playing in the ABA, too. Only reason not as much for Dr J, is that he won 2 ABA titles. In NEW YORK.

He was one of the guys along with Bobby Jones another one of my favorites and a few others that dispelled the myth that white men can't jump. I always say that these distinctions that are usually manifested by caucasians regarding sports. For instance golf and tennis especially were alway designated as caucasian sports. As well as , football(quarter back) baseball before Jackie Robinson, and Hockey. But as time has proven there is no sport that is the exclusive domain of any race. And in America being the so-called melting pot that it supposedly is we all do everything that everybody else does.

I agree, lots of those myths was started by men like Al Capanis and Jimmy The Greek Snyder, it has discourage several American Caucasians athletes from my observation, to not play basketball or so called athletically skilled sports, and/or positions. If it wasn't for the influx of foreign born players, the discrepancy would be even greater.
