Fantastic video! I just bought the newest Rad City in March, been looking at the controller upgrade but hadn’t pulled the trigger yet, these vids are SUPER helpful! Thank you so much! I watched the last video and this one! Keep up the great content. Love it! Glad to hear this from a normal guy and you showed it's not that hard to swap. I've ridden scooters at 30-35MPH , that immediate take off and speed is really something else. I am so HYPED! I don't know if I should get one of those Bolton bikes already customized to go fast, or get the rad and upgrade it just for the sheer ebike geek (ahem street) cred of upgrading it myself and learn something in the process. Can't wait for the rest of the videos! This is turning out great!!

Nice! I wasn't expecting to see a speed increase. After comparing my Veego 750 to my sister's Radrover, I was pretty sure that you were going to be pleased by how much more oomph the "real" 750 motor would have, and I see that my expectations were met. The sister is selling her Rad and buying a 2020 Veego 750, which now comes with a 52 Volt battery and I can't wait to see what kind of difference that will make between her bike and my 48 Volt version of the same model.

I had 35mph in my mind as the ideal speed for an ebike. After looking at several retail bikes online 35mph was not that common unless you bump the prices up to $3,000 +. What you are documenting is a great service for the ebike community. Knowing that we can get in with a good entry level bike and systematically upgrade is the bomb 🚲🥇

So I hope the motor and everything can handle it . my mid drive specialized can so I'm sure the Red will do fine .but it maybe like comparing apples and oranges to being that the speed controller and motor is wde open and exposed to the elements .but again "well see .may check in about upgrading in the spring though .thanks again for naking your awesome videos they're easy to follow and I learned a ton already so way to keep it Rad citizen .

Watts are like horsepower, it's a factor of total work. The smaller area motor is legitimately capable of 750w of total work if enough voltage is pushed through it. The motor is limited by overall circuit resistance. A motor with a larger rotor and stator can obtain the same amount of watts with less residual heat and it will last longer. That full sized Bafang with a higher amp controller could probably handle 1000w with the same longevity as the old motor. at 750w.

I have a 2019 Rad Rover, and aside from putting on a more comfortable seat and adding front and rear racks, I have not a glimmer or interest in modifying anything about it. As far as speed goes, I've had my bike now for over a year and have never even had it up to its top speed. But then, I'm 83, and use my bike to putter around the Mojave Desert in Southern California. I salute you for all your work and curiosity in seeing what you can do in the way of changing the factory bike. I personally love the bike just the way it came to my front gate from the Seattle shop, and have so far never had any issues with it aside from the front wheel sliding out in soft sand and the bike putting me down. I followed the video blogger James Bond when he first got his Rad Rover. About a year ago he crashed his Rad in Houston, where he misjudged the distance to a bridge railing and ended up severely breaking his hand. If he had been going faster than the set speed on the Rad, he probably would have been more badly injured.

Not surprised one tiny bit. Manufacturers got to regulate to sell. Most states 20mph tops or 750watt motors. Then you have the controller and battery life to think about. Those ebikes are held back way more than most people realize. It’s not a sellable product if the bike does 34 mph. Kinda like my BMW M235i. BMW likes to use the same engines and parts. It’s a 400hp car with very little bolt ons. 326hp stock to make room for the M2. And most of that is done with software. Lol otherwise same car. The controller is probably doing a lot. And depending on that 750 Watt Bafang. It probably Peaks at double the wattage. True 750 vs many of them running at 500 peaking at 750 etc. I 100% believe it. I’ll bet it’ll do 40mph if you start to get smart with it. When I was like 14 I had an electric scooter that would do 27 no problem. I thought that was insane then the gov. stepped in and regulated. I’m 34 now. They hold these bikes back intentionally. Short story a lot of it’s law. They need to sell to all 50 states and bring in more consumers. Those bikes are held back more than many know. For you to do it yourself it’s a bit different you void the warranty and nobody cares but yeah good video. I’ll guarantee you can get one of these to 40 plus. Some of the fastest ebikes in the world are doing 60-80mph. You won’t be pedaling. 20 grand massive margins and their not legal in one single state lol. Rad is catering to a 50 state market. Made for a long text. But most of its law. They can make these bikes do 40mph but it would be illegal in almost every state. The common ground is 750 watt motor 1.01hp or 20mph roughly otherwise it’s not a pedal assist ebike anymore. Some states require a drivers license just for a stock one. They have a sweet spot in the market. But truth be told the technology is far past what the law says. The manufacturers just won’t build beyond the law. Liability reasons. Pedal assist is the key word in the eyes of a law maker. If the manufacturers made these things blow a 50cc scooter off the road we would need that 50cc scooter. So trust me they are held back by a lot. I’m with you I think these things should reliably do 25-30

Being in the market for an ebike I'm hitting KZbin hard and must say I really enjoy and appreciate your approach. Am I correct in sensing that all is not right in the manner that Rad advertises it's specs? Apparently not all 750 watt motors are created equal as you just proved. There are other KZbinrs that have stated the same - tht Rad's 750 is not a true 750. How do we get to the bottom of this? Is there an industry standard for the classification of ebike motors? I have no axe to grind against Rad, it's just that I want to be sure I'm getting what I pay for. Thanks and keep up the good work.

The problem with Rad's (and others) claims is that they don't make the very important distinction between Nominal power and Peak power - The stock Rad motor is 500-watt Nominal, meaning that it can comfortably and steadily output 500 watts, but is capable of a Peak output of 750 watts for short periods. Just watch the wattage on your display to see this.
@Nphen
@Nphen 4 жыл бұрын
Why bother buying a RadRover or other $1000+ ebike when you're just going to swap out all those main components anyway? Your best bet is to go find a good used frame of whatever style you like (mountain bike, cruiser, road bike, moped) and then buy a motor/controller/battery kit of the size that you want. The ratings on sites like Electro Bike World are the proper ratings. Charles pointed out in his comment the difference between peak and continuous wattage. Rad advertised the peak wattage. DIY motor kits will tell you both peak and continuous.

I ordered the 52 V battery but got the 48 V. I wonder if I'm due a discount. The trick to top end speed is having enough gears to load the motor to high power numbers. Don't bog down the motor so that it runs inefficiently, e.g. high power input but comparatively little mechanical power to the wheels, but yet as you approach the no load speed the power is going to reduce, so you need some more gears to slow the motor into working harder. The other thing that will affect your top end speed is the clothing you wear. If you're wearing a loose fitting flannel shirt and baggy trousers, the motor will have to work harder than if you're wearing spandex/lycra. That is what you see the pro riders wearing. Also a fat bike isn't the fastest for road use. I picked a hybrid/MTB with slick tyres but if you want to go offroad yours is a good choice. Mine is over geared with a 52/11 as my top ratio but that is really a full power motor + pedal as hard as you can gear and only gets used on the flat when I want a big burst of speed. It's also useful for cruising in lower assist levels at a slow cadence but not enough speed to need masses of power fighting the wind e.g. 23 mph. That way I can pedal gently at 100-150 watts and have the motor add about the same power and the battery lasts ages. I may as well always be pedaling if my effort is under 100 watts. On the top power level of mine I have to have a high cadence to keep up with the optimum speed for the motor to turn, otherwise I'm labouring it in too high a gear and the motor is running inefficiently.

I've got a 2020 and waiting on the motor, hopefully, ships soon. But Rad is fudging the numbers as I have the exact same results from stock to the 35 amp controller as you have on yours.

I wonder how close the Rad Rover's systems are to the Ecotric Fat Tire bike. The stock display, shifters, throttle and 500W motors are all the same. I would like to apply these upgrades to the Ecotric. Of which I just got three days ago.

Very interesting. I wonder if the software governed the top speed in the stock bike and by installing a new charge controller you’ve bypassed that, and the new controller unlocks the greater power available through the new motor. In other words, the original motor might have actually had higher torque but the original controller wouldn’t let you tap it because of the speed regulations on ebikes.

I have a Bolton Bafang conversion motor in hand, and a controller/LCD display on the way. My conversion should get started when those parts arrive and I'll install them first. Now here's a question. My current controller, LCD and motor are in perfect shape. Looking for another project to put them in, rather than stick them in a drawer and forget where they are. Who's done interesting conversions with the stock RadRover motor and controller? Thank you

I’m interested in the Range difference even more than speed. I know the 52 volt battery will give you more power. But what does it do for Range. Obviously the faster you go the worse the range. Also tires, tire pressure, smoothness of road, weight of the rider all make a difference. Give us some info on range.

I don't really have an answer for you there. You're sort of relegated to the company's customer service possibly replacing it, buying a replacement fixing yourself, or trying to locate someone in your area knowledgeable of e-bikes. Can't really take it to a regular bike shop.

I'ive got a modded Luna KHS. Speed depends on the sprocket and rear gearing, I've got a 35 tooth sprocket and 10 speed (for the TQ) on my 2600w/60amp mid drive 52v/20ah battery an top speed is about 26ish (although honestly I've never tried top speed, so thats just the most I've seen in a few 200-300ft of full throttle). If you went with a larger sprocket and didn't weigh 280lb like me 40 seems possible.

Motor is literally the speed. Motor RPM > More Volts. Each battery upgrade (48v, 52v, 60v, 72v) is only going to give about 2-3mph difference per upgrade. Where as the motor with a higher RPM will grant much higher gains.

It certainly feels more powerful. But I'm not going to pretend to know the exact torque specs. If I were going to use a bike for hunting and pulling a trailer or a large load I'd probably go with a mid-drive motor.

I'm guessing that between the higher amp controller and 750W vs 500W motor your range is noticably LESS as well. Have you noticed or tested that as yet? I have a 26" 36V 500W hub motor and I was thinking of upgrading it to a 750 or 1000W motor and upgrade to 48V or maybe even 52 volts. Im 145 lb and 5' 8" and even as it sits without any headwinds when hot off the charger the bike can get up to 24.5-27 MPH. Of course as the voltage depletes the speed noticably decreases as well.

I have a 2019 Rad Mini and wanted the 35A controller as well. What I was advised was that due to the size of the controller and the design of the bike, a 25A controller would be more appropriate and can easily be ziptied to the frame vs. having to drill into the frame to securely mount a 35A controller. Please let me know if the 35A upgrade is possible. That was my original upgrade choice.
