@TheYorkshireBikeMechanic I have only recently found your YT channel, and have to say just how superb that it is. I was an early adopter of emtb's in the UK,having owned, ridden and reviewed them for near on 16 years now. I used to have a very strong opinion about the deristricion of ebikes. In the early years of riding an ebike, opinion was very much against them, and the topic of speed was very high on an agenda to have them banned. The pro speed lobby were creating a great risk that government might apply even stronger rules. The pro speed lobby basically took the selfish two fingers up attitude, only thinking about themselves. Thankfully, things appear to have settled down now, although sadly, restricted or not, an ignorant few risk upsetting the balance by going to fast past non assisted riders, or members of the public. I have had lengthy chats to Mark H about deristricion of ebikes and the law in respect of it. Without going on too much, I still don't see the need for a higher assited speed limit in an off road situation, but for road riding, 20mph would certainly be beneficial and to a greater extent safer in respect of being around other road users. I recently bought a Riese Muller Roadster S-pedelec to sell on again, and was actually pretty surprised that even with a 625wh battery, how quickly it drained. You can't have speed without using extra energy. Also glad to see that you covered yourself in respect of working on deristriced bikes. I was a bit concerned about that one at the start of the clip.

Great video. My city is almost all 20mph limit now, though you wouldn't know it when you see the speed of cars. A sensible restriction for the UK would be 20mph, this would help you flow with the traffic. Rather than the silly 15mph that means everyone is trying to get past, sometimes without engaging their brain.

Not in a congested city like London, pedelecs are much faster than cars over a distance of an average journey which may be somewhere between 3 to 8 miles. It is only the motor power assist which is restricted to 15.5 mph, not the overall speed of the eBike. Fit and more especially younger pedelec riders don't restrict their overall speed to 20 mph local limits, they get to the destination much faster than all other vehicles, they can additionally use routes unavailable to motorbikes or mopeds, my son reaches speeds of up to 30 mph where permitted, albeit downhill, 20 to 25 mph isn't unusual for fit and younger pedelec riders with power assist limited to 15.5 mph. Cyclists can ride eBikes with more power assist, but the bike is then classed as a moped and a motorbike helmet is required in addition to tax, insurance and registration. The problem is that pedelec riders aren't wearing any protective gear whilst they are travelling at the speed of a moped, there just has to be a point where the power assist is limited. If the power assist speed is to be increased from 15.5 mph there will immediately be more deaths and very considerably more serious life changing injuries requiring hospitalisation as a result of people having no protective gear and for many of them not even a driving licence or any form of driving instruction. A pedelec bike can legally be ridden on the road by anyone over the age of 14, with no licence and with no prior experience of being on the road whatsoever, would you wish a child in your family to have power assist to 20 mph under such circumstances, knowing that in all likelihood they will be cycling far in excess of that speed?
@dtz1000
@dtz1000 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly my experience. I feel much safer on roads when i'm going 20mph on my ebike. I guess I'm not fit because i can't get to 20mph when the pedal assist is set to 15.5mph and the road is level. Cars have no choice but to continually overtake me in that situation. But when i take the restrictions off and can finally get to 20mph then i hardly ever get overtaken in London. Feels much safer that way.

I have a 1500w diy mid drive on a hybrid optimised for road use. I do live in rural countryside. I have restricted street mode to 750w with 5 assist levels, as I find this offers good assist level increments. There are two limiting factors on any ebike. The first one is cadence. Depending on your gearing you will end up ghost pedalling at some point. With my setup, in my highest gear, I will lose resistance at around 45kph…. 38kph still offers reasonable resistance at a reasonable cadence… these rates are achievable on the flat. Cruising speed on the flat for my bike on assist level 1 [drawing around 185 W] is around 33kph. At level 2 [260 W] around 38kph. The second limiting factor is range. The more power you draw the more limited your range. I tend to stay in assist level I [185 W] because that will take me around 80km on my hilly terrain. Level 2 [260 W] will only get me 50km…. On long hills my climbing speed [level 1] works out between 17kph and 23kph… [level 2] between 22kph and 27kph… These are not excessive speeds for a road bike. These speeds can be exceeded very easily riding down even modest hills on an ordinary bike. Basically, what I am saying, is that the whole thing is a bit of a non-issue. Cadence and range are naturally self limiting factors with ebikes, regardless of the power potential of the motors, unless you install a 25kg battery and use a throttle, in which case you are riding a motorbike, not a bicycle. As far as I am concerned, I observe the traffic rules, I am considerate to other road users, and I am very conscious of pedestrians. I behave this way whatever I am driving or riding. Cyclists, assisted or unassisted, who behave like assholes, risk bringing us all into disrepute, and it does not require an electric motor to be an asshole.

the thing is, 25km/h is simply too low as a max support. You frequently exceed 25 km/h even when casually commuting to work and then the support abruptly ends and you're dragging a heavy e-bike with you. 35km/h would be acceptable

Delivery bikes in London have been tuned such that a quarter turn of the crank will prompt the motor to run the bike too ~25mph, with no further pedaling from the rider. I'm yet to see an accident, so it doesn't bother me. What does bother me is delivery riders going through red lights while pedestrians are crossing, cycling on pavements and speeding along shared pathways. 25mph on the road is fine, not when you're on a shared path that's only 2 metres wide.

As a professional driver around Oxford and an occasional bike user I do feel a 20mph limit would be safer. Would flow with the traffic better and be less frustrating for car drivers. Any more than that then its getting to 50cc motorbike classifications. From what I have seen around Oxford the quicker cyclists get overtaken less than the ones plodding along at 10-15mph. The extra power would also help with hills. I have just put a deposit on a Scott Aspect Eride 950 for my 5 mile commute to work, need to loose weight and save money. But its a nasty winding and fast road with long hills.

Hi, I am a roadie recovering from spinal surgery that paralysed me in the summer of 2022. I am considering an electric road bike but the 15mph motor limit is prohibitive, as on the flat I can still push 17-18mph, even with my disability. Having demoed 2 of the latest e-road bikes, one with the TQ HPR50 motor and the other with a Mahle hub drive, as soon as you hit 15mph (which is relatively easy for a reasonable cyclist to achieve on the flat) you are suddenly peddling a very heavy bike and the whole outfit is totally counter productive. I want to be able to ride with my partner / friends again but I'm not yet convinced that an e-bike is the solution - yes, it would be very advantageous on the climbs, but I will still get left behind on the flats and downhills - where it wouldn't be unusual for a group to be riding at 20-30mph. So until a more sensible limit is allowed, the only option is to modify the bike which I am not comfortable with - for all of the reasons mentioned

Hi, commuter/gravel,road ebikes are great at providing assistance up steep hills or when tired. Speeds of over 16mph the bike turns into a heavy one due to the battery and motor weight. unfortunately any more speed than the 15.5 means that it's not compliant with uk law making road ebikes a bit pointless unless they are super light

Makes the bike feel way more natural as there is no sudden drop off in power, I ride my levo almost only in eco now and rarely use trail or boost. Speed now is limited more by physics and feels way better . Still getting the same range and I imagine it isn't so much harder on the motor as eco is only set at 30% for me. There is certainly potential to abuse the speed but given the option I would have a bike with no limit and only 30% max assist over a full power bike limited to 25km.

Upgraded my Rad Mini-4 with the Bolton (Area 13) upgrade ctlr/display kit last winter. HUGE difference in accelleration with no effect on top speed (22mph flat). Having experienced the upgrade, I'd be just as happy without it. It's fun taking off fast and blowing away my friend and everyone else at the campground or scooting out of traffic quickly, but it's risky. Almost sent it out into traffic when I stood next to it and bumped the throttle by mistake in PAS 1. It also wants to lift the front wheel if pointed uphill and I hit the 'sensitive' throttle too hard to start moving. I LOVE my fast upgrade, but I consider downgrading regularly. Be safe.

This might sound strange, but I use a programming adapter to put MORE restrictions on my Bafang BBSHD. Here in Austria, the legal limits are 25kph and 600W. I prefer to not break the law, but I also like the mechanical and power headroom the BBSHD gives me. Limiting the speed to 25kph and the current to 12A at 52V lets me do that. Even 17.5 would be a game changer I think my hybrid cube stereo is really cumfy around that speed but obviously the motor is not engaged after 15.5 which is an absolute joke by the politicians since anyone using a racer can just glide right by and make you feel like you are standing still but lil clown on e scooters can do the same speed although highly unstable.

I bought my latest ebike online from a Chinese company. A throttle came as an extra. I then saw a film that showed there was a plug in the control box that you could connect to derestrict. I use throttle in town traffic to safely get away from traffic lights without wobbling and get me up to speed - about 17mph on a wide empty road, then I just peddle without using any power at all.

I’m not so sure about this...but from what I believe I’ve read somewhere, that you can trick the bikes computer by simply imputing the wrong tire size. I wish I could find that article or video or Reddit thing. And it also seems strange that all, for instance, all Bafang’s have the same top speed, more or less, regardless of the configuration. IF you input the correct tire/ wheel size. I want to do the experiment myself, but have to get a simple bike computer to check it against the display. This is where my moth eaten freezes up. Input larger or smaller wheel ?

Hi Steven, you might be able to do this on some lower spec models with cheaper hub motors and lower spec controllers, some specalized can be done through a phone app, bosch and shimano have their wheel circumferences programmed in at the factory before fitting and can not be changed only by shimano or bosch technicians, as a dealer we don't have the correct permissions in the diagnostic software, Thanks for watching and your comments.

Great video, trying to decide on keeping bike to set limit or exceeding it, another thought is that the manufacturer has built the bike for 15.5mph and with that in mind if the speed is increased so should the brakes, it will be scary to say the least trying to stop and not being able to in time. I guess accelerate, when nothing is around, but in London there is always something around the corner. I guess im sticking to 15.5mph. Thanks again for the info

I do feel the market for these dristricters would be much more limited if UK law permited a 20mph limit instead of 15mph. As most state 15mph is too slow when on tarmac with other traffic, but probably most would be happy at 20mph. We know the motors are OK at that speed as it's the limit for North America with exactly same motors, just different software settings, so should ne no warranty issues either. It also quite resonable for no ebike (analogue) to regularly acheived speeds of 20 +. SO want to go faster than 20mph - get a moped/motorbike or pedal harder, what is the problem? .

I think an important point may be being missed here. For all those with a driving licence, we know the rules of the road and to follow speed limits. So If your e-bike is derestricted, as long as you adhere to speed limits and to where you're allowed to ride these sort of bikes, you're okay. As for motor durability, it all depends on how often you will blast it and how much. I wouldn't panic after watching this video as the owner of this e-bike neglected maintenance for extended periods and that's how, as was said in the video at the start, it was in a poor condition, the owner brought it in for a major service and so on and so on... Clearly, it wasn't knackered due to the Speedbox. I think the tolerances to which the de-restrictors derestrict to are still well within limits of what these e-bikes can handle. I have no qualms personally.

Just got myself a Whyte E-160s after almost 2 years on a giant reign2 this isy first emtb. I can honestly say that the speed limiter absolutely sucks, topped out assistance on a couple of trails where the bike jusy feels like its dragging whereas on my non ebike I'd have just been able to carry on through. Also peddling it to work and home the assistance is excellent on the uphill sections but on the flats I'm consistently passed the 16mph limit or at least I would be if it wasnt such a workout, my non ebike is definitely faster and i can certainly maintain a higher constant speed so if i were to hit anyone/anything then there'd be a higher speed of impact on the non e-bike just little less weight impacting. This 16mph seems silly to me, I'm sure a roadie with skinny tyres can achieve some considerable speed on a flat road due to less resistance so why limit a peddle assisted bike to 16mph?

I live in the US where our bikes come restricted to 19.8 mph. I de-restricted my bike because on a few occasions each ride I bump up against the limit & it isn't the government's business what I do in the woods if it doesn't effect anyone else. I can't imagine how intrusive & fun-restricting a 15 mph limit would be & honestly can't see how anyone wouldn't de-restrict their bike. To say that there is a greater chance of hitting another trail user because you are riding at a breathtaking 18 mph is just silly. By that logic pedal bikes should also be restricted. This is the modern day equivalent of requiring turn of the (20th) century cars to be preceded by someone with a lantern to warn pedestrians of those new-fangled horseless carriages.

The EU/UK limit is a joke. its very hard to push a restricted Bosch motor past 15mph as your fighting the motor resistance and the additional weight of the bike. Even myself as an unhealthy individual will hit hit the 15mph limit in a few yards and then its like going from hard pack to claggy soft mud in an instant. Living in Notts where the terrain is fairly flat but undulating its less work to get over 15mph on my pedal bike than it is my ebike. the sweet spot for this kind of terrain is about 20 to 23 mph. As a consequence Ive fitted a Volspeed which i have set to a max of 30mph but rarely go over 25 on flat ground. Ive done 45 down a nearby hill on my pedal bike and Ive done 45 on the same hill on my derestricted ebike. i certainly feel a lot less vulnerable derestricted on the odd occasion that i do ride tarmac especially when the road limit is 30mph . The US limit seems more sensible but I still think 25mph on a bike with top end brakes is still easier to bring to a halt than a 100kg motorbike.

I sit on about 31km/hr on my non-eBike and the eBike is limited to 25km/hr which becomes very frustrating because, even though you can pedal faster after the motor cuts out, the reward in speed you get is not equal to the amount of effort required, because the bike weights 35kg. Also I can descend down a hill at 50km/hr and as you reach the point of incline the bike just comes to a halt until you're under the 25km/hr limit, after which you've just lost too much momentum. The tune takes all of that away right? Why the law cannot allow, say, a limit of 35km/hr if I'm allowed to do so on a non-eBike doesn't make sense.

The biggest con is going to be the liability for at least 6 points on your driving licence if used on a public road. You will (at a minimum) be face being charged with having an unregistered motorcycle, which does not comply with construction regulations and riding whilst uninsured. If people want a de-restricted bike, then buy an electric moped.

I have mixed opinions here. I live in Australia which has the same limits as Britain and Europe. In USA and New Zealand it is 32kph and a different regulation in USA allow for a higher speed. One thing I didn't realise until after purchase is that I'm amongst the slowest of riders during commuting hours heading to the city. Where this causes a problem is with the racer boys that pass me with oncoming commuters coming head on and squeezing dangerously through a narrow passage. Upping that speed on an ebike to 30kph would keep me in the general flow without causing angst with the impatient riders. I'm not sure if it will wear the motors any faster as the same motors power the fast USA models as well as those with the slower regulated countries. Ideally laws need to be changed but non ebikes can easily go faster without any regulation. Sucks it does.

Nz bike are sold up to 45km for trek road road bikes, the limiting factor is output not speed, as long as you are not exceeding the posted speed limit like other traffic there is no issue, exceed the output and the bike could be classified as a moped and need to comply with rules associated to running one of those.

The issue of warranty If the module is removed before it is taken ot the shop for repair. They have no way of knowing the bike may have been fitted with a unit. The speed restriction law is a bit pointless and more about revenue raising. I often get over 30km/hr on flat and down hill under my own power. The limiting to 25km/hr does not limit the posibility of going faster than 25km/hr, it just cuts out assistance. In some locations riding back on public streets from trails back to the car I've clocked well over 40km/hr. The Police can do absolutely nothing about it as the speed limit is 60km/hr and my ebike is not chipped or modfyed in anyway. Similar speeds are possible even on trails on public land. All it does is limit climbing at at higher speeds or sustaining elevated speeds for prolonged time. Do I need to go fast up hill or scream around twisty bits. Not really as I often ride with younger manual non eMTB riders and keep up. When I ride with older manual non eMTB riders then I either don't turn on the battery or just ride my other manual non eMTB.

I think the motor wear issue is not really a problem, esp given these exact same motors are used in places that allow higher limits like North America. The only real wear item as such is the bearing and they will still be turned when you are over the assistance limit The battery *may* OTOH start to degrade faster due to more charging cycles (because you are using battery more). And also that may happen because you are out on the bike more because a raised restriction makes the bike more fun to get out there :) I'd say your legal issues and warranty thoughts are correct tho.

I'm in the market for a first e-bike. Yes, it is frustrating that I'm going to be limited to 25kmh assisted. Of course, if I have an e-bike with a good selection of derailleur gears for example like a Cube Kathmandu which I'm currently considering which has 12, on the flat or on the declines I can just do as I currently do on my pretty basic hybrid bike and just pedal harder under my own steam. The e-bike will be easier for me on the hills and into those headwinds and when I'm loaded down or pulling trailers. I test rode a different e-bike recently and it was feeling so relatively effortless even in the lowest assist. I was pedaling along gaining speed and suddenly something happened. I crossed 25kmh and I was back to reality, I would have to just pedal harder as I do already on my own bike. And 250mh motors are really underpowered too. As soon as I sit on an e-bike that's 120kg before I add any luggage of which I usually carry quite a lot. That's the load bearing limit of most e-bikes exceeded already. But not too long ago this very evening I was watching a video from Canada demonstrating the difference between a mid drive and a hub drive e-bike for commuting. Nobody mentioned restrictions or legalities but the hub drive was doing about 40kmh and the mid drive hit 60kmh. The hub had a throttle, the mid didn't. I was feeling oh so jealous and not a little frustrated. They didn't mention what brands the bikes or motors were or power output. It was just the differences between the two types of drives for commuting. The main reason why I can't have an e-bike that will do 40+ kmh on the flat is because we all know that there will be the normal percentage of idiots who will be riding them with due recklessness on the pavements and shared paths and running normal cyclists off the bike lanes. I'd love to be able to do 40+ kmh on my 20km commute each way to work. It would really shorten the time each way. And I would absolutely never go over 25 in a bike lane. But you just goddamned know that all the yahoos out there are just gonna go mad with the extra speed. There's plenty of them out there already on illegal and derestricted bikes and scooters regularly causing mayhem and damage with impunity. Am I right or am I right? I am actually now beginning to seriously consider the option of buying something that will be faster and stronger for those longer commutes even though it will need to be taxed, insured and the correct license. Which is making me feel sad because I really had my heart set on an all round e-bike workhorse. I don't know yet but I'm looking into it.

I can't imagine how annoying it would be to only be able to go 15 mpg while most regular bikes are flying past you at higher speeds. Every time I commute to work on my ebike I struggle to merge with traffic, which is mostly moving at 20-25mph. Right turns can be a nightmare, there's two that would make my commute shorter but they're just too dangerous so I go a bit further. Also I tend to clog up the cycle lane on flat or downhill sections, then on uphill sections other cyclists are in my way. A limit of 25mph would make my commute safer, faster, & more convenient for other cyclists not using ebikes. My commute is along the most dangerous roads in the second worst city in England for cycling accidents, & I am a very experienced cyclist, who has never had an accident involving a car in all my 60 years (I once hit a drunk pedestrian who jumped in front of me tho lol), so I speak from experience. I very much enjoy my ebike, as i would otherwise be unable to still ride, & it is convenient, cost effective transport. But the 15mph limit is by far the most hazardous aspect of it, makes me feel like a sitting duck in many situations that, when I was younger, fitter and on an ordinary road bike, simply never occurred.

My commute is mostly along Burley & Kirkstall Roads in Leeds, they're deadly for inexperienced cyclists, seen some horrible accidents. I did the cycling proficiency test as a kid, remember that? And all the public information films used to be on TV? There should be more of that now, older people new to cycling simply don't understand how dangerous it can be imo.

If you haven't already can I recommend that you get a good pair of motorcycle type mirrors for your e-bike. I have them on my ordinary bicycle and they are fabulous. A good set of individual right and left Bluetooth indicators can help too to communicate your intentions on the road to following traffic as well as your shoulder check to make eye contact (you will already know what's behind you from the mirrors) and using strong clear outstretched hand signals. I hate cyclists who give a brief one second half hearted flick of the hand which happens so quickly it's hard to know it even happened. I am considering an e-bike at the moment but 25kmh is definitely too slow. I do that and more already on the flat without a problem not being anywhere near fit and latter fifties. But for the hills and headwinds it would make a big difference. I just might consider looking at something a bit faster that would require a license and insurance and mix it with my existing ordinary hybrid bike.

The point regarding safety isn't really valid, it's not like you can't go past the assist limit by pedaling. The other thing might be worth mentioning is that many emtb's are acquired through schemes and derestricting the bike is not allowed, on or off road. I'm picking up my first emtb tomorrow and will be leaving it stock, though I have no issue with those that mod theirs. Personally I don't think the limit is needed even on public raods.

Hi, Thanks for watching and your comments. I strongly disagree with your views on safety, the fact that the motor can propel the bike to an unlimited speed and where in a country helmets and insurance are not compulsory makes it unsafe in the wrong hands, The law states that they must have a maximum power output of 250 watts should not be able to propel the bike when it’s travelling more than 15.5mph. there are cons based on fantasyland or a specialized set of circumstances. On a trail, how fast can someone pedal downhill unrestricted, or just turning off the motor and using gravity? If I disconnect the pedal sensor and install a thumb throttle, will the ECM allow this or will it not function unless a pedal sensor is connected? I really want to fix it for him as he's getting old and it's difficult for him to peddle without a motor to help but I don't want to waste money on a throttle if the ECM won't allow it. I'll keep the bike in line with the law on power and speed but rather than replacing an expensive pedal sensor I think a thumb throttle will be an easy, convenient and safe fix (albeit slightly against the rules) Many thanks.

Their motors seem to last fine. 20,000 miles is what a normal e bike motor lasts.
