I have a Duramax converted H2 done by Mike and couldn't be happier. I doubt the torque had anything to do with front dif. It's the same setup in the HD Duramax trucks. I'm guessing your mount was missing the metal washer and it pulled the dif out of the mount. Your engine is probably fine as well.

Yeah, Mikes work is great and the vehicle truly was amazing until it wasn't. Gotta work through a couple issues here. I'm also considering fabricating a safety system that bolts to the crossmember but goes up and over the diff, with a bump stop. The loads that the 40's saw, when dug into the earth, air'd down, in reverse, are imparting pressures that a lot of people haven't imparted. I do agree the washer is most to blame, but I don't want to be dependent on one washer either, moving forward. Being stuck off road, in the pitch darkness, as well as the rescue/recovery process...it's just no damn fun...as you'll see in the next video.

@@KnightDriveTV I also wanted to chime in to thank you for these hummer videos. Obviously, I also love Corvettes but I could never afford one. LOL! But I do have an H2 and I eagerly await each video that you put out regarding your build. I spend a lot of time in Vegas and once I get a motor in my H2, maybe I’ll see you out on the trail!!! I’m sorry that you keep running into issues, but I’m sure you’ll find that the damage is not as severe as you may think. I’m thinking somebody skipped something when they lifted the H2. The front differential should never shift or tilt. But once you get that figured out, I think she’ll be right as rain! Oh! If you haven’t beefed up your rear axles and differential housing yet, that should be next on your list. Or put a modded full floater back there. Don’t give up! H2’s are making a comeback!! 😎

Sorry to see it broke so quickly, but it's part of the process to find the weakest link when whole systems aren't bulletproof yet. I once punctured an oil pan after the front u-joint broke after a day of wheeling on a lifted Blazer. You'll be back...

32:49 are you saying that the bolt that goes in the main crossmember bushing didn't have the washer on it? So the bolt went through the bushing and the diff rised?

Thats what it seems like. The front tires definitely dug in and transferred a lot of torque to the diff.

The mix of heavy tires, heavy engine, and big torque exposing the IFS limits unfortunately.

Well if it’s geared properly transfer of power should be smoother. But I get what you’re saying more stress on mounting points and what not

@crappy60 even with gears the input torque on the pinion is astronomically higher from the diesel and lower gearing of the Alison transmission.

Sorry to hear Damian! Question, how steep was the hill when you had to throw her in reverse? Regardless, initially the LBZ swap is still good but ancillary parts were the weakest links. Looking forward to what you find and what happens from here. Thanks for providing insight to these swaps.

I'll be doing a system to insure it doesn't happen ever again and can't happen. Can't have these weaknesses when out in these environments. The vehicle has to bring you home or all hell breaks loose.

that is such a bummer man. damn it. it sounded SO GLORIOUS! :( But hey, check out Liquimoly MOS2. It was literally designed to keep aircraft motors running should they lose oil mid flight. it coats all the metal components in the motor, and definitely wouldve protected you in a scenario like this. but it sounds like youll be fine, the engine probably is okay. but for next time!

I enjoy these H2 series and lot of fun thers But if you want vehicle bring you home - keep it stock and choose new over old one. I believe author could do same tracks and still have fun on almost stock vehicle

FYI I tried finding this video again after watching it today and your videos were no where to be found… I put hummer h2 Duramax and all kinds of variants of that and nothing came up. I had to go to your KZbin channel then look at videos to find it… BUT I came back to ask a question. From my understanding you put a newer Duramax in here right? I was wondering why you didn’t go with a 05 or whatever year your hummer is but Duramax? Wouldn’t a lot of things change over nicely that way? I’m looking at doing the swap and I have a 05 h2 and was looking at buying a 05 Duramax out of an HD. My thoughts are everything would swap over easier, I know not much is the same but I would just throw in the 05 HD cluster in and should seem fine. But when I talk about stuff being easier I’m talking about fittings like a/c stuff and other wiring stuff that would be the same since it’s from the same era. Let me know if I’m wrong. I need advice!

The LBZ with the 6spd is really the best option, all factors considered. I'd suggest calling Mike at Mash Motors and ask his perspective on that question. He has done over 300 Duramax swaps into H2's, so he can outline the facts for you.

If you get the motivation to continue the project soon, I’d love to collaborate. Having a hummer of the same year and model it would be beneficial for both of us. I own a metal fabrication business.

We'll see what happens, moving forward. First, a partner locally is needed so I can get this thing back to driving, then take a look at some type of safety loop fabricated up and over the diff, with some type of bump stop, as well as mounting it with some type of limiting plate under the bushing. It'll be back but, we gotta go through the diffs and just eliminate that as a worry, once and for all. I have big plans for this H2 ahead, so it needs to be bulletproof.

Damn I think u needa find a new trail buddy also when u get the h2 fixed man ouch. Guy panicks at the slightest encounter but then cracks jokes at you when one of the worst things has just happened to your rig.

He can be a tricky fella but...end of day I'll get it figured out. I made my way back up there the next day on my own for quite a recovery effort. Ended up having a lot of local guys help out and we were able to get the hummz out of there. Video comin next week or so

Yea you might be right lol I can definitely be a little bit of a pussy when we are off roading. I get very disoriented at times especially at night... I grew up in government housing back in Pennsylvania and we are far far away from where I grew up. One minute you're on a known trail with no obstacles and the next minute you lose a ground and your off-road lights go out taking away all your peripheral vision... Things change pretty quickly and if you watch other videos it doesn't take much for the situation to turn bad quickly. Sometimes cracking jokes during a bad situation is a way to deescalate something really bad that has happened. Damian and I have been friends for over 20+ years and God willing will be friends for 20+ more. If you're from the area and you like to off-road maybe we can all link up. If not where are you from and what are your current projects and plans? Always interested in learning.

What lift kit has been installed on the truck? What I see from the pic's is the front diff pulled out of the aftermarket lift kit, differential crossmember. I've never seen a lift kit with this type of mount. Should be completely adequate, but not without it being properly secured. Please take more pictures. You mentioned the transfer case was folded. I'm guessing you meant front diff and not TC. The Transfer Case does NOT have a mount, "technically floats". It bolts to the transmission directly behind the Transmission mount on it's own crossmember. Who put it together without a washer or it may have been purchased this way. My guess is 4WParts, possibly Mash, but likely not Mash, since , to the best of my knowledge, does NOT incorporate the front axle actuator that is intended on the 2500HD powertrain from the doner truck. On my conversions, i always use the actuator, as intended. That is of course, prior to my 2018 build where I finally figured out the proper method to incorporate the AWD from the OEM, Borg Warner 44-84 Transfer case found in ALL H2's of any year. 03-09. In addition, what was the check engine code you got when you had your first test drive?

Fabtech lift and yeah, I agree with you. It's just a shame that Mike and I both missed it but...it happens. Very small detail to overlook but a very costly result of it missing.

I really love the IFS ride quality. I think I am going to reinforce it, maybe put a safety loop to insure it never happens again. Solid axle is appealing in rock but all other areas, IFS is amazing. Its a real comrpomise.

They tractor pull on the 9.25 IFS. They're plenty strong going forward....just not reverse it seems. May need to modify the rear mount.

The Duramax curse. Almost every Hummer owner that has done the conversion regrets spending the money. The LS3 (with the right transmission) is a more desireable engine for the Hummer H2. And putting a Duramax in a pre-2008 Hummer H2 is somewhat retarded, because '08-'09 are going to be the valuable collectables. Glad you have money to burn.

I'm not sure I see that opinion reflected by the Dmax owners. The Dmax is a far superior setup for this vs the LS3 just due to the brute force. This drivetrain issue also would've resulted with a supercharged LS3 regardless. I don't think the money is burned, as my use is more important than resale value. These are depreciating assets either way you squeeze it.

Love the vehicle BUT...once this Hummer is dialed with 650lb/ft+ of torque with that monster 6spd allison transmission...Land Cruiser can't compare if ya ask me. Land cruiser builds are a big inspiration for this build ahead...you'll see!
