Hi Luke. I started learning English by myself when I was 30 years old. At the beginning, I studied grammar, and small readings. Latter, when the audiobooks came out, I started listening to them and I'm still doing it. I have been learning it for fun. I speak Spanish and have learned portuguese. As in English, I have used the same method for learning Portuguese. Currently, I'm 71 years old, and I have been learning French for 3 years now. Since the arrival of the internet, the learning of a foreign language has became easier because I can use all the resources such as postscast, like yours which are very interesting, and I appreciate them a lot. Also audiobooks, music, news reports, among many others. In my opinion and according to my experience, I can say that listening and repeating have played an important part in my learning of the foreign languages. Currently, I enjoy reading English, Portuguese, Spanish and French literatura. I believe there's no age to learn.

Hello Sir, I'm fortunate to get your share. It has inspired me a lot. I'm 32 years old. And, I've always thought that I am too old to learn a foreign language. I've supposed that reaching real fluency in English is nearly impossible at my age. As of now, your learning language journey makes me feel embarrassed a lot. I've been too lazy and not tried to learn English in the right way. Thank you so much for your share. Best wishes to you!

I learn whole sentences saying them aloud. 5 days - 300 repetitions per day at least. Later I don't need to translate. I know the meaning of words straight away like in my native language. And also I remember the meaning longer than by learning separate words. This method is called: chunking. It was a real game changer in my learning process and communication skills in English and other languages.😊

@@LionCall-yi3dlDifficult question. The ones which are the most useful for you. Take a ready sentence which is correct without mistakes. Best are short sentences 4-5 words. Repeat them thousands of times saying them aloud. You can repeat a sentence for one hour so you have arround 1000 repetitions. Repeat untill you stop making mistakes and it is effortless. Benefits: you train your pronunciation and clarity of speech. It helps with problems with speaking. No need for thinking about grammar as you have ready to use correct phrases. It also helps with understanding of fast speech.

I think that the influence of our native language over the L2 language is due to our encyclopedical knowledge, and it helps us to compare and recognise the meaning of the words about the foreign language we are learning because we have already got an idea about the world.

Very interesting. I would add one more skill to the usual four that are: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The fifth skill, to my opinion, is thinking. When you have trained your brain to work according to a 2L vocabulary, grammar and proper wording/phrasing, you can express yourself. Expressing oneself is basically "speaking out". What can one speak out if there is nothing in? So to me, learning a language is an ongoing process of building another inner world through - that sounds absolutely right - interaction with other people, their feelings, opinions, interests and knowledge. When you speak a second language, you don't just change your old clothes for new ones, I mean you don't put new words on the same ideas you're made of. New words are the very threads your new ideas are woven into. They are the new way you see a new world while becoming a new person, while adding new perspective to your entire worldview.

I remember being 'greedy' in my language learning journey. There was always not enough for me, I was looking for more ways and resources to help me to be better at English. I remember reading fiction books in English and looking for someone I could talk to. There were no apps at the time like today where you could easily find English speaking friends but I did find a website and it was so incredibly interesting to chat with people around the world. So, the most important thing in your learning is that what you do must be something you can hook on, so this way it's easier to turn anything into a regular habit.

My method to learn English is basically similar. First I Iisen to luke's podcast, I identify new bacabulary words and new expresiones, then write down some questions about the podcast, and then I answere those questions by speaking outloud. So this strategy helps me improve my listening, my speaking and helps me expand my vocabulary words as well.

"Thank you, Sir. I have finished listening to your podcast and found it was very beneficial for me. As an English learner living in Somalia, I am deeply interested in mastering English. I use several methods to improve, including writing down unfamiliar vocabulary, translating it, and constructing sentences with those words. I review them daily, and then write an essay incorporating all the words I’ve memorized. Finally, I read articles to see how these words are used in context. This method helps me remember the meaning of each word and how it is used in daily life. While watching your podcast, another method came to mind: searching for common words used in specific areas such as politics, culture, or travel. Translate these words into your language to understand their meanings, then write and print them on paper. After that, choose a topic related to that area and practice speaking about it. Whenever you miss a word, refer to your paper to remember it. This approach helps learners practice, remember words, and become more fluent in English. 28/Jul/2024

I've end up being among those the blessed who have a knack for learning a language. I finished school with a poor A2 level and returned back to studying almost at 40. Being passionate about this global language, I've managed to successfully complete courses B1,B2 and confirmed the level by IELTS EXAM. Of course, age matters, memory doesn't work like it used to work in my 20 s, yet learning new things are immensely rewarding. Owing to knowing English I've altered my career dramatically and become a teacher of English, possessing freedom of working from home and being in a high demand. Good luck with everyone's language journey. Greetings from Ukraine. 💙💛

To be honest I started learning English at school. Studying english in primary school was easy. Mainly that was based on learning basic vocabulary and grammar. In middle school I had really good teacher who make I was having fun during english studying. Basically I was only doing things what we were doing at school. I was studying vocabulary, grammar rules and reading. One time when I visited United Kingdom and I had to spoke with english community I realised my spoking and listening skills are on the terrible level. I was disappointed. After over 9 years of english lessons in school I realised my english is not so good like my grades. I decided to change something with my english journey and I started listening podcasts like your channel and BBC learning english channel. I hope I'm gonna be on the B2 level soon. Sorry for my grammar fails :D

The approach now I am using involves shadowing the whole episode (sometime just half of it), for those which I personally find intrigue me the most (for example the conversation with Amber and Paul, or when Luck talks on his own). I would shadow it first without any subtitles, in this way, some words could be pronounced without knowing the meaning, but I would guess and feel it in context and infer the possible meaning by looking at their facial expressions and so on. After this, I would go back and turn on the subtitle, looking up the words that I have noticed, then check the meaning IN ENGLISH rather than in my first language. I find this is extremely help for me as it allows me to try my best to keep up the normal native speaker's talking speed and get a sense of how they connect words together in sentences.

Interesting thoughts, Luke. To my viewpoint, to effectively learn a second language, you have to ask yourself a few questions all along the learning process 1) Why do I need to speak another language? 2) Do I like learning it and why? 3) What resources and what methods do I know and make good use of? 4) What amount of available time can I muster and how? and 5) What support can I get from my family, friends and colleagues?

Hello! Thanks for this new episode, Luke! Your personal view on the best way of learning a language absolutely resonates with my idea on this issue. I guess there is no universal method everyone can apply in order to become fluent in L2. I mean, of course, any regular language practice is helpful in language learning. The thing is we can't practise regularly for a long time(and language learning is a lifelong journey) if we are not enjoying the process that's why every learner should work out their own approach to learning which will appeal to them.

There's a saying I find appropriate to something that was said during this interesting episode, Luke. Here it is: "You never really know a language until you know at least two". I may be paraphrasing. As a former translator pf a couple of novel from English to Italian, I strongly believe this is true. I discovered so much about my native language while trying to bend and mould it to pay justice to the original English text. A fascinating job which leads you to accept the fact that you will never reach perfection, and that's ok! Thanks again, Luke. I'm deeply grateful to have found you, at last!

Luke excellent work indeed. When i was studying in Italy, i had to learn italian for the exams, for everyday routine communication and for socializing as well. Unlike my countrymen, i made italian friends and had a girlfriend too. The result? Approximately three years after (1975), on a bus in Greece, i caught myself speaking to the collector in italian without acknowledging it, but for the surprised face of his. "Un biglieto per favore". In 1994, i went to Rimini for vacations. For the last 18 years i lived in Greece, and hadn't visited Italy ever since nor spoken italian to anyone but rarely. In a bar in Rimini i had a conversation with an attendant there, who told me that i was from south Italy. Until this day that language has definitely stuck in my head, so as much that my wife, who has studied there too, but for only two years, every now and then asks me the meaning of an italian word (she is Eros Ramazzotti's fan) and in most cases there it is its meaning. Long story short: As you say repeatedly, 'Language acquisition is something that it is done for the most part.' It needs strong motivation too. Be well, and your Lepsters too. i am also one of them. Bye.

The breakthrough for me in learning Spanish was listening and watching videos in Spanish. I can easily understand what I was reading but I couldn’t understand the people I talk to in Spanish because of the speed and I was not used to the sound and blending of words. If you ponder over native speaker's way of speaking they also take natural pause while talking about something. This is pretty common. However, when a language learner takes pause so his mind says that you are getting stuck and that's the biggest mistake we usually make. We want to speak fast without even taking a natural pause. Since i have understood this concept, I can see my progress and this is literally amazing.

What works for me is immersion and a maximum exposure to the language with podcasts, music, series, books and of course through the interaction with people. In the place I live, we have what we call "le café polyglotte" where we can meet native or non native people to have rambling conversations in English but also in Spanish or Italian or even Russian sometimes. First and foremost I would say that what matters most is to have fun with the language you learn, keeping in mind that this is a bit like changing one's identity, as if acting on stage... How enthralling! Learning a language is a never ending story and humility is also the key word even when you have reached a seemingly good level. Can't wait to listen to your next podcast 😊

Thank you very much for your clear explanation. Some languages such as russian require that you master the grammar well from the start. If not it will become hopeless when you are reading or hearing the language.

Terrific video, as always!🙂 Starting point: almost nothing is just black and white. In order to study and describe any phenomenon, process or activity, scientifically or not, one tends to break it down into almost "atomic pieces" and then fails to put them together again. As an example of the consequences of such behaviour is the study of the aging effect on learning a second language. Finding a correlation between age and accent, performance, grades, etc., does not mean a causal relationship at all, provided confusion factors were not control at first. Correlation exist between age and many other factor (time one can dedicate to study, family and jod responsabilities, exposure to the language, time to be corrected, tolerance to not achieving results quikly enough, etc.) that can affect learning a second language rather than the age itself. In the same way, we tend to define as logic dictates, mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive categories, when in the real world they overlap to different degrees. That is the case of the "learning styles". It is almost impossible to find "pure" styles, as we use multiple (inner and outer) resources and strategies to learn, even though we tend to follow more some or other styles at a specific time. Regarding exposure and attention, many people listen to a lot of music in a foreign language and do not learn it, or al least not a significant amount or at an instrumental level. Many people live and work in a foreign country and do not learn the local language. Being there is not enough. Nevertheless, even without paying attention one can learn something. Again, it is not black and white. The way we focus on exposure, attention and how we combine them and other factors as time, styles, resources, motivation, goal, etc. are key to succed or not or the results we get. ☯ Useful to unravel this topic: - ALG: The Most Unique Language Learning Method kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4ibfmeAqJmIeKM - Why and how adults can learn languages better than kids kzbin.info/www/bejne/eYjYeI2fmc9qbLc

❤❤❤ Luke, I don't know why, but I almost completely understand everything you say. You have a wonderful voice timbre and excellent diction. But at the same time, I often do not understand what announcers say on American television, because I cannot separate the end of the previous word and the beginning of the next one.

Hello, Luke, I appreciate your comments about the way to learn a language. I have just taken up to study myself. I began to choose the book "Love in time of cholera" written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I discovered the amazing way to learn by reading. Also, my favorite english songs have helped me to improve pronuntiation and fluency. Thanks in advance for sharing these fantastic ideas.

Hello Luke. I am a Vietnamese who has made efforts to speak English and French in a proper way of expressions. I am currently living in Los Angeles, California. My question today is that although I have lived in the USA for more than 20 years, somehow; I find the British accent in my daily conversation is more familiar to me; particularly it is easier for me to comprehend English speakers than American speakers; perhaps because of the intonation or the emphasis which the British use during conversation. I just do not know the reason. Some of my friends then ask me: "Hey man, you live in the US, and you have never lived in the UK; so why do you try to speak with an English accent?" My mother tongue is Vietnamese; French is my second language, and English is my third. I found your expressions, and your tone, truly appealing to me. I can hear Luke in a podcast for hours. Thank you so much Luke.

I used to be a passive student, that is, I consumed information in English as much as I could, both reading and listening, but I realised that it was very, very difficult for me to reproduce, write and above all speak. It's very frustrating to understand a lot but speak little. Now my greatest effort is to speak and communicate as much as possible.

You are the foremost person to have told that learning a language depends on the an individual per se. It is the way that works for you. Moreover, it has to be enjoyable experience for you. Anything enjoyable sustains longer, and when you enjoy doing something , you don't give up , thereby making it possible for you to reach your goal. Not to give up and to stay persistent is the key to learn a new language. Everyone has different circumstances, so same means or method of learning cannot to applicable to everyone.

In learning German i basicslly had to learn the structure of the 6 main verb tensee of English and realised the 6 verb tenses in German are the same. I needed to be confortable with the 6 main German verb tenses and then i felt like i had the blueprint or template for constructing German sentences. The second key was learning the Konjunctions of German to then construct two clause sentences. Then stage 3 is to deepen the vocabularty of the 2000 most used Geraman words. Then you start to speak it and make all the mistakes

Thanks for going through this article with us. I need to catch up with the whole article but the summary looks fascinating - thanks for that AI! The conclusion I've come to with language learning is that everything works - every method, resource etc has the potential to work. I guess this comes back to the second point about finding a method that works for you as opposed to following the trends. Some people have even had great results with uncool methods like grammar-translation. Looking at the points though, I feel like language learning requires a lot of time, patience and effort and that's not the message that people want to hear!

Hi Luke, I'm a fan of yours. I've been following your podcast since, some months ago, I watched the episode called "The Mountain". Usually, it's exciting to try new ways to learn a foreign language. There is a downside to doing it and concerns the level of knowledge. Listening to or studying stuff not according to one's status is self-defeating. I've found nearly blurry and vague what has been told in the speech. I mean, how can acquiring a new language, be considered a HOLISTIC experience? NEW LANGUAGE must be highly highlighted. Really academic. After all, how we have learned our native language should be the best method to apply. Step by step and gradually consolidate the achievements. In my opinion, writing is the best solution to come to master a language. Doing compositions, there is plenty of time to develop our thoughts and to build sentences as well as rephrase them. Thank you so much for your devotion to teaching, you are GREAT!!!
