for that one lyric, there's a few layers - they are both Sagittarius's, which is the "fire sign", hence "twin flames." (In State of Grace, the opener for the same album, she references this too - "twin fire signs; four blue eyes.") but then she's also asking if the twin flame *bruise* painted him blue as well. the hottest, most intense part of a flame is blue, but so are bruises, so she's equating the two. and asking if it "painted him blue" references blue as the "sad" colour - she's asking if the dissolution of this intense, fiery relationship left him shrouded in sadness as well.

I think the line “I’m a soldier who’s returning half her weight” is her describing herself like a soldier who’s gone through war and returned wounded/lost limbs, she’s fought so hard to keep this relationship but at the end of it she’s no longer complete/whole. Few lines after she asks “did the love affair maim you too?”, she’s asking him whether like her, he has also been wounded/lost part of himself. Maim I feel is a word that’s often used in wartime scenes

It's also related to her eating disorder - see the "your Brooklyn broke my skin and bones," skin and bones being a way to describe someone who is exceptionally skinny. The war she went through with him - I don't know that Jake himself was part of the ED, but trying to fit in with his friends in New York was part of why she developed her ED, and Jake being "casually cruel in the name of being honest" was definitely not helping her self-image or self-esteem, when she needed it most. A soldier who goes through actual war, especially if they spend time as a POW or trapped away from their supplies (Taylor feeling trapped away from her support by having moved to New York from Nashville...) will often lose a lot of weight and come home skin and bones because of their experience.

A five and a half minute version of the song was originally released on Red in 2012 but Taylor made the "mistake" of saying it was originally 10 minutes, so fans kept begging her to release it. It's not just a fan favourite but also considered one of her best songs lyrically. Not surprised you thought it was about John but it's actually about Jake Gyllenhaal who Taylor dated when she was 20 and he was 29. Taylor has said the scarf is a metaphor (fans think it could represent her losing her virginity to him - "It reminds you of innocence and smells like me"). Yet she was photographed wearing a scarf (not red though) with Jake and his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal back when they were dating. Jake was even spotted wearing the same scarf after they broke up (I wonder if that's what she's referring to when he's watching her in the end). As she sings in the lyrics about it being at his sister's house, Maggie Gyllenhaal has been asked about it multiple times and has said she has no idea where it is or if it even exists. "I'll get older but your lovers stay my age" - He dated actress Jessica Lowndes (who was 23 at the time) a few months after breaking up with Taylor in 2011 and model Alyssa Miller (same age as Taylor) in 2013. Even now, Jake's current girlfriend, Jeanne Cadieu, is 15 years his junior (he's 42 and she's 27). "Brooklyn broke" is a term used for someone who dresses like a broke hipster when they really are rich. But they also spent most of their time there because I think Jake lived there, or at least his sister did. Also, In The Moment I Knew she delves deeper into her 21st birthday party he didn't show up to. "And did the twin flame bruise paint you blue?" - A twin flame is a spiritual belief where one soul is split into two and exists in two bodies, so finding them is literally meeting the other half of your soul. It’s more intense and passionate than a soulmate but can be much more destructive and incredibly toxic. Also, think of it this way: The hottest fire is blue flame. Bruises are also blue. The consequences of such an intense bond burned them and painted them "blue" (which is the color of sadness). It can also be a reference to the song State of Grace from the same album in which she refers to herself and this former love as “twin fire signs, four blue eyes". Both Taylor and JG are a Sagittarius and blue-eyed. Sadie was 19 when this was filmed - She and Dylan have a similar age gap Taylor and Jake have. For the most part they actually improvised the fight scene. Besides Tiny Desk, she sang the original version on Reputation Stadium Tour so you've both heard it. I recommend doing an evolution of the song because it has gone through so many changes. Starting with the original recording on Red, the Grammy's performance in 2013 and the SNL performance in 2021.

I can relate to this story. In my youth, 18-25, I dated men who were a lot older than me. Like I was 18, they were 32. I was 25, they were late 40s. I’m 36 now. Those same men are still single. I always thought I was unlovable. With adult eyes, I can see it was them not me. They were the immature ones. They dated me bc I was young and attractive. But that’s all I was to them. I’ve since been in a 8 year long relationship. But now I’m with a guy who doesn’t believe in marriage. So again, I picked a man who is afraid of commitment. I’ve been in therapy after I proposed to him. He said yes. But later he decided “we don’t need to be married”. In therapy, I learned my CPTSD and anxiety attachment style made avoidant attachment men very attractive to me. Divorce really affects kids. I was always alone and felt unwanted. My first “healthy” relationship taught me love doesn’t hurt. A lot of those scene and lyrics was me. I couldn’t help but cry a few times. Currently, my boyfriend is now again my fiancé. He claims we will get married this year. But if it doesn’t happen, I’m leaving. I’d rather be single than with a guy who doesn’t trust me enough to get married. He wants a prenup. I’m okay with it. But he is dragging his feet and always has an excuse for why he can’t meet with a lawyer. I’m ready to be alone and break this cycle.

The lore goes that when she was “reeling” from this relationship, she was rehearsing for the Speak Now tour. One day she was feeling quite horrible and just starting singing this song, at least the earliest version of it, during practice. Her mom had someone record it and gave it to Taylor because she knew her lil girl would want it. The song was finally written and cut down to 5mins something and went in the original RED album. Fans found out it was 10 mins long originally and asked taylor to release it for years and we finally got it. Most of the RED album (original one and not the vault tracks) is her processing this break up. A few songs like begin again, everything has changed, and stay stay stay are not about this but almost all of the others are.

When it refers to a soldier returning with half his weight, for me it means a reference to when a soldier returns from a war with some part of his body mutilated, it is as if somehow she had left that relationship with a lot of herself gone because he stole it and it is another reference to would've could've should've when it refers to "give me back my girlhood, it was mine first"

New subscriber here, let's talk about "reeling". I was born in the UK and educated there. Miss Swift spent a good deal of time in my home country. I'm American now! In the "auld English". Reeling was being knocked off balance. Or knocked off your pins as my old Nan would say. Keep in mind that Miss Swift is incredibly well read... This is obvious with another song, Cassandra. Great reaction, the actual scarf was navy blue with gray and red in it, Taylor was photographed walking with Jake Gyllenhaal, her wearing the scarf, after they were no longer together Jake had been photographed wearing it, and that is more than likely how Taylor knew he still had it. since her album was called Red, it made sense to make the scarf red. Some swifties will say otherwise and that the red scarf was a metaphor for her virginity, but she had already had her relationship with John Mayer and I doubt that it was only platonic.

Taylor confirmed that it was a metaphor in a Q&A discussion about the making of the video. She literally said that it’s a metaphor and they turned it red because red is an important color in the album. And then she looked very embarrassed and said “when i say it’s a metaphor i am just gonna stop” and then “thanks for the question, you’ve really taken us for a ride with that one” (drinking nervously from the glass of water) The way she responded and being so embarrassed it really sounds like it was her virginity and not her actual scarf. But then I wonder what happened with John Mayer. And in Would’ve, could’ve, should’ve “ it sounds like something happened between them. So I am a bit confused. But she does say “But I took your matches before fire could catch me”, so maybe this means she managed to get out before something physical happened.

This song is such a broken song and the music video made me SOB, thanks quite a lot to Sadie's acting chops. One of the things that has always stood out to me about the song was him keeping the scarf in his sister's house after all these years - she doesn't know that. It's her broken-hearted wish that he did, that he still thinks of her years down the line as a lost love, that he still cares for her. In reality, he very likely threw the scarf out, moved on from her quite quickly and thought of her as a short lived fling. Meanwhile, at her young age, he was this great love that essentially wrecked her. It's just so sad to think about.
