Good stuff! When I watch your video's, especially those CSX manifest freights, it seems every piece of rolling stock is part of the extremely long train. The BNSF Lampasas sub [Central Texas] runs through part of the farm. The manifest trains are rather small compared to those on the CSX. The close-ups are awesome, but back in my day as a brakeman for the SP on the Hearne sub, you had to stand pretty far back when watching for hot boxes on a passing train. Chains and metal bands were often dragging the ground off unloaded flats.
@mbmars014 жыл бұрын
Many thanks! Not all trains are very long, but some are monsters. However, I have seen monster trains on UP and BNSF as well. But it's also true that as part of precision scheduled railroading trains have generally become longer.

Great video. I recall these double-changes happening to me on several occasions when I was working as train crew back in the late 1960s. You would be called out to relieve a northbound crew on long hours, and within 1-2 hours you would meet and change over with another crew onto a southbound train so that both crews would return to their respective home depots within shift limits. This was in Australia.

Always a Great show. The close ups of the wheels to the tracks is always pretty cool. Seems only you can get the perfect shots of the Steel on Steel. I just realized that the DODX flat cars have a 6 wheel Truck set up on the cars. Thanks for sharing.
@mbmars014 жыл бұрын
Great you like the close-ups. They are difficult and only work if the train isn't too fast. The 6-wheel trucks are necessary to support the weight of a heavy tank loaded on those cars on basically all types of heavy and not-so-heavy rails.

4563 is indeed a very good looking machine, just like the other two locos in the lashup. I'd like to ask something about crew change. Are the guys on the Ferromex locomotives Mexican or American? I assume when the train departs from Mexico the crew is local and when they enter the United States the American guys takes over the engine. But this is just a guess. By the way there was another squirrel, which ran across the track in front of the train at 15:02. :) This is another entertaining video, thanks for the upload.
@mbmars014 жыл бұрын
Typically, the railroad that hosts a "foreign" train or power on their tracks offers the crew. So, your assumption is correct. Yeah, the squirrels are crazy trespassers lol. Thanks!

0:50 The SD70MAC isn't EMD's first road locomotive with AC traction; the SD38AC came out in 1971.
@Cnw87014 жыл бұрын
The SD38AC has the "AC" designation for its alternator. The original SD38 had a DC generator instead of an AC alternator for the traction motors. Technically, the F69PHAC was the first AC-traction diesel locomotive built by EMD, but the SD70MAC was the first commercially successful model that was built in response to the positive tests conducted with the SD60MAC testbeds used on the BN.
@mbmars014 жыл бұрын
@Cnw#8701 Right, that's what I thought. In the SD38AC, the AC current was converted back to DC for traction. The MP15AC was also earlier, but did not have AC traction motors either. To exclude the F69 passenger diesel and the SD60 test models, I carefully chose to say "first road locomotive" in the caption.
@Cnw87014 жыл бұрын
@@mbmars01 Yep. So basically, the SD70MAC was the first major production AC-traction model for EMD.
@ericbastiaanse57324 жыл бұрын
Whats the different between a mac from all the rest?
@mbmars014 жыл бұрын
Well, the M stands for wide (or safety) cab, which was not that common at the time the loco was first built. AC means AC (alternating current) traction, and the SD70MAC was the first commercially successful EMD model with AC traction motors. All earlier SD70s and the later SD70M-2 have DC traction motors. The SD70ACe is an AC loco as well, of course.

Are sd70mac rare and if they are why?
@mbmars014 жыл бұрын
Not really rare, but most railroads who still have them put most of them in storage. The last 70MAC was built more than 15 years ago and so they will slowly disappear unless if being rebuilt (CSX has indeed started a rebuilding program).
@rokk7064 жыл бұрын
SD60mac's are rare. There are only two of them both were demonstrators. BN bought them both back in the day. AC traction were 1st tested on those two units. The trucks proved to be great and since the SD60 was at its later stages in production the SD70 got the AC traction trucks.
