In this video I talk about the 7mm Remington Magnum and how it compares to the .300 Winchester Magnum.
Both the 7mm Rem Mag and the 300 Win Mag probably are among the first cartridges that spring to mind for hunters thinking about buying a new rifle for a serious hunt they think they’ll need a real heavy hitter on. They’re also among the most popular cartridges used by hunting outfitters and guides all over the world, but, for reasons we’ll get into shortly, this is particularly true for guides based in places like Canada and New Zealand.
In this video, I’m going to conduct a detailed comparison of the 7mm Rem Mag vs 300 Win Mag in order to show the differences between those cartridges so you can make an informed decision on which one will work best for you.

My Dad always carried a 300 Win Mag. I grew up in Montana where elk are king. I went on my first real elk hunt in 1974. Coolest thing I have ever done or will ever do. ALL THE MEN in camp, (to a freakin man) carried a 300. My Dad, my Uncles, their friends. These guys were serious about elk. Most of these are gone now but my cousins and I still carry their very rifles. I can’t tell you how in awe I was of those guys. I swear they drank a toast to John Wayne the night before the hunt. What could any man ever give his son that is better than a memory like that. I have carried a 300 since I grew into one in 1978. Have never looked back since. The Seven is great but around these parts the 300 is a King’s rifle for the King of game. Ballistics are all well and good but the mystique of the 300 is just legendary.

I know what you mean. My .300 mag. has been handed down to my son. I've owned a .338 and a 7mm mag. but I kept the .300. I got rid of all my mag. rifles and now use a 35 Whelen if I want mag. power. Hopefully the .300 will never leave the family. My son has three sons of his own.

I own all 3 calibers and loved shooting all of them . A while back I had 3 vertebra in my neck repaired and afterword could not handle the recoil from any of them . A friend of mine talked me into a muzzle break and seeing how the 300 win mag was my favorite rifle it went first . I shoot 180 grn in my wind mag and it now recoils less then my 308 it is truly a pleasure to shoot . I have since put one on the 06 and the 7 mm is next . Do not be afraid of recoil get a good muzzle break and enjoy shooting these 3 classic calibers .

You can use lighter bullets, the .300 Win mag. works fine with 150-165 grain bullets, and the recoil is substantially reduced. You need to forget any type of muzzle break \ muffler. I couldn't stand the muzzle blast. You can always reduce the power change, which cuts down on recoil. Or get some type of smaller caliber. The 7mm- 08 kills anything.

I'm 53 and I bought a 7mm Mag, when I was 14 and been hunting with that rifle, ever since. I've had that rifle all over America, including Alaska and even been into Canada. My favorite cartridge to hunt with.

Im 31, and just bought a 7mm mag as my first hunting rifle. I just got the license from the police in the post, gonna pick up the rifle tomorrow, and am hyped. It’s a bit of an odd choice perhaps, since most here uses the swedish 6.5.

I like the 7mm rem better than 300. They are about the same for ballestocs. But you get on average 25% less recoil with the 7mm.

I've been a fan of the 7mm Remington magnum since I was little. It's the first rifle I ever bought. It does everything I have ever wanted it to do. Everyone has an opinion and mine is 7mm Remington magnum. Good video

I like 7mm I like 300wm. I have shot both many times. For non mags I like 30 cal. I am now considering a 28 nos as a new big game cartridge. Then my buddy(he's a 300 guy. He has a nice one) all look at 300 prc. Damn it, now what.

When I was "prepping" for my first elk I instantly went to the 7mm mag. Found a nice older Remington 700 for under $500 and never looked back. It was brutal "target shooting" (zeroing in day) but manageable. Around here the ammo is easier to find as well. The 7mm wins in my opinion.

Always hunted with the 300 Win mag. My father always made fun of me for using it on whitetail but I never had one get away. I bought a 7mm Rem Mag this year using 154gr sst. I dropped my first whitetail with it last night and it didn't go anywhere. I do like the recoil of the 7mm better than the 300. You can't beat either one. 300 win mag will probably always be my favorite cartridge.

Used a 12ga with slugs. They don’t walk away from that. Also used plenty of 243, 7mm-08s, 308s, and a 6.5-284. Only time I’ve had issues was with a 10mm auto. Shot it later with a 460s&w mag. All guns are plenty for deer. They aren’t terminator robots.

Been using the 7mm since the mid 70s. use handloads with 175 grn, Nosler partitions. Every moose and deer I've taken was one shot, dead before they hit the ground. Super accurate, and can't really notice the difference in recoil from 30-06 or 270.

@@JamesDBlanc hi James, i just saw this video and your question. Since nobody else gave you an answer I'll try. I have never noticed any more or less wear and tear on a rifle action from a magnum vs a standard. All rifles these days are built reliably and the big difference is personal preference. I am referring to bolt actions and single shoots. Few lever actions are designed for or available in magnum calibers. As for barrel accuracy/life/burnout. Yes a cartridge that burns more powder creates more heat and pressure, thus more "wear". I've been hearing about "burned out" barrels for nearly 50 years, don't think I ever found this unicorn in the hunting fields. Benchrest/target game sure, hunting rifle very unlikely. If you compare a 30-06 to a 300 mag, all else being equal, you'll get about 500 more rounds out of the 06 before any change in accuracy. But that change is usually small. If a hunting rifle shoots 1" groups normally, it might open up to 1 1/8 or 1 1/4" after 4,000 - 5,000 rounds. In a target competition rifle that's a huge difference, in a hunting rifle it is absolutely nothing. Just enjoy which ever rifle and caliber you choose. Don't worry about wearing it out, your grandson will still be using it long after you're gone. Cheers

7mm mag is the sweet spot. Had a Remington 700 7mm mag loved it. Looking for a new gun ended going with Thompson Dimension in 300 wm thinking if I hated it I could buy the 7mm barrel for it. Only took a month I was shopping for the 7mm barrel for it. Staying with the 7mm mag for good.

Great video I have a 7mm bolt action Browning rifle. I took Elk and Carribu and muel deer. I used the 174 grain bullet with the bigger game. When I was a Marine Corps recon sniper I used the Normal magnum round for a mile shot. I used a remington bolt action model 700. I took white tail deer in Wisconsin with my 7mm magnum. One shot one kill.

Put a muzzle break on my Ruger 77 and the recoil from the 7mm was reduced to the point that it shoots like a 243. Very accurate rifle.

Hunted with a number of different calibre . 223, 243, 308, 30-06, 300wm, 240 weatherby, 25-06, 303 and 7mm rm. Ended up with the 7mm as (1) its the gun I'm most accurate with and (2) ammo availability. Strange but I think because where I am 243, 308 and 30-06 are so popular all the ammo for those calibres was bought up from 2020 till now. I hunt 4 times a year from April to September and average about 15 animals a hunt for my group. I've shot impala (head shots only), warthog, Gemsbok, wilderbeest, ostrich, kudu, zebra, hartebeest and eland. The 7mm does it all effortlessly.

Put me in the 7mm Rem Mag camp. First hunting rifle I ever bought. My brother tried to one-up me a couple years later with a .300 Win Mag. Over the next few years, we debated intensely, but eventually, he had to admit animals didn't seem to notice much of a difference down range, but the difference in recoil between them was readily apparent on long afternoon shooting sessions. The 7mm Rem Mag does everything the .300 Win does, but with less recoil. If I needed more than the 7mm Rem Mag, I'd skip the .300 Win and go for the .338 Win. I hunt in western Montana. Elk, mule and white tail, black bear. I had good luck with 160 gr Nosler Accubond and 162 gr Hornady SST. My brother used 180 gr Swift Scirocco and 200 gr Accubond. Both of us use M700s and handload, so we never had any problems getting plenty of accuracy. Both rounds did the job, the 7mm just seemed to do it with less fuss.

I agree for the most part. Among other things, I've used my 300WM on deer and pronghorn at 150-250 yards. It worked fine, but I didn't really need that level performance for those hunts.

Exceptional hunting calibers: 243 Win (coyotes and varmints), 7mm Rem Mag (deer and black bear) and 338 Win Mag (brown/grizzly bear) particularly for North America. Very, very similar ballistics the first several hundred yards. Got the 338 for brown bear: Potentially you are 25 yards away for 700+ lbs that is quicker than a race horse and is hunting/attacking you. The Eskimos considered a 243 an improvement over a harpoon to hunt polar bears :O Personally, I will use a 338. :]

I won a NRA gun of the year, a Montana.Rifle in chambered.300 win mag. I have harvested wild bore, whitetail deer, mule deer and eik using 150 to 200 grain projectiles. I am an old high power match 30-06 shooter and love 30 cal. Recoil is no problem.

I have both calibers and each one has there pros and cons. The 7mm destroys alot of meat, but I love the flat shooting. I like the 300 win mag if I am blacktail hunting and run into a bigger black bear. I started hunting deer elk and black bear about 50 years ago with a model 88 308 winchester with a redfield scope. Boy have our options improved over the years.

Definitely 7mm mag. Love mine. Has yet to fail me yet. 35 years of hunting and has dropped every big game animal right wear it stands. Very efficient and less recoil than the 300 mag. Pluss less powder. It is the do all rifle caliber. 😁❤👍👍👍

I generally hunt with my 26 inch barrel Cooper .280 Ackley improved. I get 3166 fps with 61.5 grains of H-4831 with 139 grain Hornady BT Interbond bullets. Super accurate.

In my experience, the -06 performs best all around with the 165gr bullet. The .300WM with a 200 and the 7mm with a 175. Can't go wrong with either the 300 or 7mm for anything native to North America.

7mm, -- gr RL-22, WLRMP, Winchester brass, 140 Nosler Ballistic Tip. Black bear, mule deer, whitetail, antelope, and a rock chuck. The ballistic tip dumps the energy causing a massive wound channel.

Good informative vid. You finally got around to it at the very end, and that’s “range time”. None of us feels recoil in a hunting situation, but that’s totally different at the range. Working up hand loads, it’s not unusual for me shoot 20 + rounds in an outing. I don’t own a 300, but even the 7 mag starts to hurt a little toward the end of a session. It’s at the range that I build accuracy and confidence. The 300mag and the 7mag are just too close in performance to deal with the 25% more recoil of the 300. JMHO ; )

I just got my Sako 85 SS 24" barell, prefer to shoot it at the range more than my .270! I love it! Now my favorite rifle! I use a Nosler 140 gr partition, cant beat the balistics and killing power. Hydraulic shock of the 140 gr partition is unmatched!

I load a 154 gr with reloaded 17 for my 7mm rem Mag. 1/2 sub moa 4 shot groups. Have taken a lot of deer with that round. Just haven't been able to get a chance at elk yet. I will load a heavier nosler for the elk however. Good comparison.

Grew up in Alaska and shot both. Went to get a rifle in left hand and had one choice the 7mm, use the Nosler portion for years. Now I use Barns and use lighter bullets with less recoil! Shot placement and proper bullets will kill anything. Both are good calibers. 👍

I’m planning on moving and hunting in Alaska within the next year. I really like the idea of picking up a 7mm to hunt all game in Alaska including large brown bears. Most data points towards a 300 winmag being the better option but I would prefer to have lighter recoil from the 7mm. What game have you harvested with your 7mm in Alaska?

I have made rifle barrels and custom rifles for 35 years. Most is psychological. No your limitations and pick the right bullet and put it in the right place. These are similar. If you want a step up and can manage the recoil, go to the 300 Weatherby Magnum.

Both they have great ballistic characteristics and can take everything in North America and many animals in Africa. Recoil is not bad on either a bit more stout on the 300 but still very doable and ammo is everywhere. So you can't go wrong with these fine cartridges.

The Canadian Rangers were issued a new Rifle recently. They operate across the arctic, the mountains, and boreal forest. The ability to defend themselves from polar bears and grizzlies was a key consideration, so extensive testing of bullet design was conducted. They were issued the Tikka Arctic Rifle in .308.

That's absolutely true. However, logistics was also an important consideration in that particular decision. As members of the Canadian armed forces, the choice to replace the old Lee-Enfield rifles in .303 British the Canadian Rangers used to carry with ones chambered in 7.62x51/308 was undoubtedly influenced to a certain degree by the fact that the Canadian military has gigantic stockpiles of 7.62x51 ammo for all their other weapons in that chambering. That's not to say that they made a bad decision or that cartridge is not capable of what they're asking it to do. However, I think they would have chosen something else if they were starting from a clean slate or if the Canadian Rangers were not a military force.

7 mag is my choice, What's nice about the 7mm magnum is the casings are almost identical, so they will function in 300 WM magazines, I bought a heavy 300 WM sniping stock for my Remington 700 7mm, and the 7mm magnum barrel fits perfectly, and 300 magazines feed reliably. Lighter recoil makes it really comfortable to shoot. 😊😊

I have a 300. I handload for it, great accurate cartridge. If you want to compare a 7 to the 300 and have things almost be equal, look at the 7mmSTW. Practically the same on paper but the 7has MUCH higher BC bullets. And there are 195gr match grade bullets available for the 7 and 178 grain, so a comparison of the two is interesting as the performance is almost identical. But, the 7 has much higher BC bullets. Taken various game with it, it tends to knock them down.

I’ve got a 300 win mag and use it for fallow and red deer and it doesn’t skuff up the meat that bad

I own and use both, buy whichever one you like and practice with it, a lot!! use the best bullets you can get for the job at hand and either will do the job. Truth be told I’m more of a medium bore guy, love the 338’s and have been a lifelong fan of the 35 Whelen… there’s a lot of capable cartridges out there and often we are splitting hairs but I understand why we do it.

Personally I'm not a big fan of any of the Magnum cartridges . I will not shoot at any big game animal at more than 300 yds , as I find that the end of what I personally am capable of under hunting conditions . Burning a lot more powder for a couple hundred ft per second that you get from using them . The guns are heavier , the ammo costs more , and the meat damage can be significant if you'r not careful . I sold my Ruger M77 in 300 Win Mag several yrs ago , and honestly I don't miss it . With today's ammo , you can do all you need done with a .270/.308/30-06 .

I have owned quite a few different Cal rifles . There are 3 that always pull me back in 7mm mag ,270 win and 45/70 .

I just traded a Savage Axis in 308, for a Parker Hale 1200 in 300 Win Mag. Almost showroom condition. I am reloading for it 180gr Nosler Partition, H1000 powder, Federal magnum primers and either Rem, Win or Fed cases. Very accurate.

Love the 7mm mag, nothing against the 300 though. Just have a 7mm and don't plan to change

Throw in a lightweight 338 Win Mag, like my stainless Tikka and now pick the ultimate North American hunting cartridge to say 400-450 yards. I love both the Big 7 and Winny! But wonder if the 338, just might be more versatile? Sure it kicks more, but feel it's more effective on larger game. Shoot 200 grain bullets for dear and black bear and 210 to 250 gainers for elk, moose and bigger bears? If one is going to put up with 300 Win recoil, then picking a 300 Weatherby, 300 RUM or 338 Win is really not that big of a step up, especially with practice. I do like the Big 7 still, but simply would have to make perfect shots on bigger game, along with the correct bullet choice.

My favorite load for the 7mm Rem mag is 175 grain sierra boat tail with 59 grains of IMR 4350. For Eastern whitetails and Western Mulies. Very little meat loss. I have a good load for 140 grain sierras but way too much meat damage.

I have always used winchester xp 140gr rounds. Thru and thru never take another step and very little meat loss

I've killed many moose in northern Ontario with a 7mm rem mag and 150gr corelocks. The 7 is a fantastic cartridge but the 300 is no slouch either

I’ve personally never seen the point in the 7mm RM. I wouldn’t use it on anything I wouldn’t also take with a 270. However for Elk and Moose I find the 300 WM gives you a leg up on the standard cartridges. I actually find that 190-200 gr bullets loaded to 2800 fps work for everything, don’t destroy too much meat, and has good long range ballistics and energy retention. At 400 yards it absolutely clobbers a 308 or 30-06 for energy

A 7mm Rem Mag 168gr Berger HSM round, sighted in at 200 yards still has over 1400 foot pounds of energy at 700 yards. While a 200gr 300WM will give you slightly better energy at that distance, the difference in recoil to me doesn't make up the distance. My Remington 700 with a muzzlebrake and MDT chassis feel less than a .308 and absolutely could kill any animal outside of huge African game (e.g. elephant, rhino, hippo) at a 500 yards, as it produces 1800 foot pounds and a flat shooting round. Also, yes, I know I could shoot heavier than 168gr, but why? If the expansion takes place within 6 inches of entering the body cavity, the animal expires extremely quickly. It is all about preference though. I can tell you a perfectly placed 22LR round will kill almost all North American animals. Both rounds can take any animal on the continent ethically. Heck, I even own both. :) I just wanted to give a little more info than what the video gave. My 1984 Remington BDL 7mm is my favorite rifle and has killed many animals, most dropped when struck.

Just sighted in my Winchester .300 WM, with a vortex scope. Out of the box, kid you not, bullseye at 200 yards with REM 150 grain. Could not believe it. No sighting needed, totally impressed

Some how in these trying times I just got myself a Bergara Woodsman in 300 win mag brand new at a used price and 5 boxes of the Winchester silvertip 180s at around $40 a box. Gonna be hunting black and blue wildebeest with it next summer

Selling me on the 7mm Rem Mag is an uphill task. If I need or could benefit from more gun than a .270 Winchester, or a .30-06, my first stop is gonna be .300 Winchester with 200 grain Partitions. More likely a .338 with 225 grain Partitions.

One couldn’t really go wrong with either one. Realistically if you are considering big dangerous game, brown bear for instance, you should step up to 338 at a minimum. I know of a big brownie shot in the shoulder with a 300 win, and just left. Elk and down, great.

I have both. I like both. 7RM with 168 berger bullets for deer. 300WM with 180 ultra bonded for moose. If you do not like recoil, do not use either one of these guns. Get a caliber you can handle like a 30-06 or 6.5CM.

I have both. I’m a fan of the 300 win mag. My choice has little to do with the caliber, both work anytime anywhere. My 7mm is a Remington 700. My .300 win mag is a Ruger, left handed with factory boss brake. Since I’m a lefty, and the brake Reduces felt recoil both have apps the same KICK.

Both! 7Mag for deer and smaller, 300Mag for Elk and larger. No need to re-sight your rifle when you move to a heavier bullet from deer to elk. The ultimate setup IMO.

Have you seen the Christensen Arms 300 win mag the brake on it no lie helps it kick less than a 243 so the more versatile round can also kick less!🤯🔫

If I was limited to one I might choose the 300 but I think a better choice is 7mm Rem Mag and a 338 Win Mag. Actually my personal choice would be a 280 AI and a 35 Whelen.

Never owned a .300 win mag unti last fall. Iv killed whitetails with.270 and 30-06 but my first shot with the .300 win mag was a quartering away. It knocked the deer down that hasn't happened since my .50 hawkin put them down too. Yep in sold on the 300 win mag. And my browning safari loves win 150 gr win interlocks.

Being able to drop down into more varmint level bullet weights is another plus for the 7 Mag. They used to make "accelerators" for .30 cal to try to let them cross down, but typically, they are not that great for stabile shooting. Uncontestedly anything past 500 yards, goes to the 7 Mag also.

Reading the comments the 7 seems to be the overall favorite so let me give my .02 on the 300wm. 1. I can get factory loads from 139-220, this lets me Hunt everything from hogs to grizzlies. 2. Ammo is easy to find and reload. 3. Recoil with a brake at 139g is very tolerable. 4. If you want a do it all rifle this is my pick. 5. Personally I just own both :)

I like the 7mm Rem mag. I do get joked on about using the 7mm Rem mag for woodland whitetails, I never had a deer get away from me. DRT! It just works! I use it in the woods I use it in fields from deer, hogs and bear. I will eventually use it in western states and when elk become legal to harvest in my state.

Nothing wrong with using the 7mm Rem Mag for woodland whitetail! I've done the same thing with the 300 Win Mag myself. They're a little rougher on the shoulder and the wallet than something less powerful, but they sure do work! What state do you live in that has elk but no hunting season right now?

Reminds me of a hunt in upstate NY. I was hunting a wooded area and a white tail tried to sneak around the back of my stand about 100yds away. Had to twist and take a relatively quick shot as it was galloping. The round ended up going through a 6" pine and then into the deer which dropped on the spot. My rifle was a 7mm RM.

7Mag Is A Great Round and I Have Used For Muley And Auodad In West Texas. But My Favorite Is The 300 WMAg. It Is My Go To For Culling Out Big Feral Hogs. Never worry about Accuracy or Placing 1 Clean Shot on Target. Both have excellent use for medium to large North American game.

With modern bullets ie boat tail and ballistic tip designed performance will place the 308 Win and 3006 in magnum class if you reduce the magnum to standard bullets. My point is bullets have improved a lot. Yes you can use them in the magnums but you will do so at substantially less barrel life and more recoil.

I would personally go for the 7mm mag. Ammo is cheaper where I'm from and plus lighter recoil. Even tho I do have a 300wsm which matches the 300 win mag or at least it's very close. So my personal vote will be the 7mm mag
