The media tends to help along these narratives by calling girls "women" child victims in general as "young people" and r*pe/SA as "intercourse" or "s*x". Media is complicit. Once you start paying attention to the language that so called journalists use in their articles (see also: reporting on police brutality) you lose a lot of faith.

Just because someone is abused, doesn't mean that they haven't had many good examples of how to behave towards others. Almost everyone I know who had been sexually abused before the mid 90s basically were told not to talk about it and the shame was all on us for being children who had no voice. I’m surprised that he was willing to confess this on National TV. Clearly, he isn’t taking responsibility entirely for what he did, by virtue of the way he speaks of a 10 year old, but the simple fact that he went as far as he did in confessing is extremely rare. I guess what I’m saying is, even for a pedophile, he has more integrity than the others who have done the same, and worse, who deny it and never take responsibility at all. That goes a long way for the victims’ peace of mind, and it’s the only thing the predator can do once the abuse has been done.

The whole issue with women/people letting bad behaviour slide because we're afraid to be "rude" is such a huge, and underestimated, reason why so much abuse happens or continues. The amount of stuff I have excused or put up with because I was afraid of "offending" someone is awful, and I know I'm not the only one.. Edit: When I say this, I don't mean it's the victim's fault. I mean that we should be raising our children with self-confidence and autonomy, so they feel like they're able to speak up. Forcing kids to hug people when they don't want to is a huge no-go (in my opinion). Our children deserve to feel confident and secure enough to speak up, and it's the parents' job to help foster that confidence. It's NEVER the victim's fault when they're abused. That is not what I'm saying; just that our children deserve to be raised to be confident and self-assured. Edit: I also think it's ridiculous that there's a statute of limitations on SA crimes, especially child SA. So many people don't ever see justice because they didn't find their voice until it was too late.

@@booognish Yeah, it’s absurd that there’s a statute on those types of crimes. Paid off? This isn’t Argentina. It’s called being professional. It’s not their job to do that. When challenged, there’s a chance he’d shut down. At that point the reporter could probably forget about the interview. He’d (Collins) probably be done talking. And it isn’t _that_ crazy that someone-who was a victim themself, would do that. He probably didn’t even do it on purpose.

Around the 25 min mark: “he said, it happened again.” He as well as Katie Curic say this line. He is very aware of our sub conscious use of that line. It conveys as if he couldn’t help it, it just “happened” as if he had no control of his life, or decisions. As if he’s talking about a hurricane hitting or an epileptic seizure, “happening.” No, this doesn’t “happen again.” He did it. Own it. Take responsibility or else he will do it again! Disgusting!

It seems to be a hallmark of unreformed criminals. I've watched plenty of interviews with people who were serving a prison sentence, many of them murderers. They all used veiled language when they spoke about why they were in prison. "That night, a man died". What the woman actually did: She took part in a breaking and entering robbery and when things escalated, she shot a man dead. "I'm in because of the murder of my wife." What the man actually did: He strangled his wife to death. -- I think as long as you cannot bring yourself to say: "I killed", "I raped", "I molested" if you did those things instead of talking about things happening, you are not reformed yet.

In my country you just shook hands:) One thing I hope will change too which seems to be a normal thing to Americans is beating your kids and often with a belt. I have seen people write about it on Facebook how that is the only way to make them good people which is not true it teaches them to be violent and not trust their parents. In my country it's against the law to hit your child. We have never used belts but in the old days you could get a spanking with the hand but this has been against the law for a very long time. Seeing all the comments here from people having been molested by their dads and mothers not believing them just makes me so very sad because it's double betrayal. Best wishes to you!!

It's also worth noting that this was before MeToo, and there is a LONG history of the media (and, by extension, the public) demonizing and discrediting victims and whistleblowers of SA. Not to mention that women/girls are taught from childhood to always put the feelings of men/boys first, to appease them, and to explain away their indiscretions. At the end of the day, Faye was NOT responsible for HIS behavior, and the kind of shock she must have experienced when she first learned about his misdeeds would have been earth-shattering. Faye was _also_ a victim of this man, just not in the way his other victims were, so the fact that people are going to find a way to blame _her_ for things shows how much farther we need to go in our understanding of abuse.

Being a victim of sexual abuse by my brother, I refuse to let him win for what he's done to me. He still lives with my mum who sided with him, I have BPD and PTSD because of him. My mum is a narcissist too. Not to mention she gaslight me for years saying what I said about my brother is for revenge and spite. I never understood that, I still don't. But there is no way I feel that way inclined to do that to another child. Absolutely disgusting, really bloody disgusting. This abuse has stopped with me. I Don't even like kids, I'm close with my niece but that's it. I would never dream of doing that to her at all. Stephen Collins has himself to blame. He deserves to rot in hell, same goes for my brother.

I'm so sorry that he did that to you. I know how painful these experiences are and then to top it off with complete invalidation from your own mother rather than the protection and support you deserved must be especially painful. I hope you know that no matter what they may say to you, you deserved better from both of them and you were right to speak up for yourself regardless of how poorly they chose to react.

The way it all “broke” was pretty weird. Pretty sure his wife/ex-wife secretly recorded him or recorded their therapy sessions where he admitted it? So yeah, its basically just what she knew/what he was wiling to admit to while on the spot in a room with his estranged wife and essentially a stranger, I assume in a desperate attempt to save his marriage.. Definitely sketchy, I guess some of the victims have since come forward in some capacity, but it does seems like he’s been able to control the narrative in a PR/damage control/artificial acting type of way. Not that the victims owe anyone anything, but it almost feels like he’s taken advantage of his celebrity and his own ability and willingness to present his own very questionable narrative, from his own warped predator perspective.

I think the statute of limitations on child molestation should be the same as murder. There shouldn’t be a statute of limitations. It is a horrible crime. The child has to live with it for the rest of their life. Why doesn’t the molester have to live with it the rest of his life. He should be in jail for life. Just like the child.

I had things happen to me as a child that I'm still working on in therapy, and not once did I do what this abuser did. I never want anyone to feel how I feel, so I just don't do it. It's that simple. Don't do it. Don't abuse. Don't continue the cycle of abuse. I wish they could've done something. It was similar with me, by the time I knew the words, too much time had passed.
