Christopher Eccleston was 41 when he played the Doctor. Russell T. Davies is the same age as the show itself 1963.

It was always my personal head canon or fan theory that 9 didn't have romantic feelings for rose but knowing that she felt that way about him, he regenerated into the type of man he believed Rose wanted, someone outwardly closer to her age, someone more light and playful whom she would be able to have more fun with, and most importantly someone who could reciprocate her feelings

I always justified it by saying this incarnation was literally borne out of a Kiss from Rose. Now that his rose is in bloom, A light hits the gloom on the grey....

RTD takes advantage of DT's facility with language and the ability to memorize large amounts of complex dialogue and makes him much more verbose.

I agree with your remarks about Doctor Who evolving. All shows do to some extent, but Doctor Who arguably does it way more than most. The only permanent regular character is the Doctor himself and even he's been recast multiple times. Every time there's a change in the cast or the production team, it results in a subsequent evolution in the series, sometimes miniscule, sometimes Brobdingnagian. Even the swap of Susan for Vicki, superficially they're similar characters, a teenaged girl companion, but Hartnell's relationship with Vicki is subtly different to his relationship with Susan. Since Vicki isn't his granddaughter, he's less the authoritarian parental figure with her, and becomes more the indulgent grandpa, pushing Ian and Barbara more into parent roles. "Don't worry, Vicki my dear, we'll slip off and visit Rome on our own and have a little fun and leave Ian and Barbara here for awhile." Subsequent changes in companions lead to different relationship dynamics, Ian and Barbara leave and only Ian's character is effectively "replaced" by Steven, but Steven is a more obstinate, less easy going character than Ian and this is reflected in his relationship with the Doctor. Sometimes the Doctor is a teacher/mentor to his companions, like with Jo or Leela for example, sometimes he treats them as more of an equal (the Romanas), sometimes he has a really strong friendship with them (Sarah Jane) some he tends to bicker with (Tegan) etc, etc. The Producers and script editors affect the series even more. Sydney Newman's concept for Doctor Who in the planning stage was for it to have an educational bent, but Verity Lambert quickly shifted away from that with the original Dalek story, prioritizing telling good adventure stories over slipping in facts about history and explaining basic science ideas. When Innes Lloyd became producer he phased out the pure historicals as audiences responses to them weren't as strong as to the sci-fi stories. Much later, Derrick Sherwin would trap the Doctor on Earth and have him work with UNIT, mainly to bring down the production budget but also to do stories aimed at a (slightly ) older audience. Phillip Hinchcliffe found that gothic horror worked well in Doctor Who, with stories that parodied Frankenstein, the Mummy, The Thing, etc. And later producers introduced other changes. I've always felt that, on some level, constant change is the secret to the series success. The show is like a shark, it must constantly keep swimming forward or it will die. Even the most recent version of the show will eventually change, but the core values of the series remains constant... Being smart is a super power, Evil must be fought, Don't judge by appearances, It's a big universe out there, well worth exploring.

The Doctor's medical degree is from Glasgow in 1888 under Joseph Lister. Well at least according to The Moonbase, in reality by that date he had moved to King's College Hospital London.

Very interesting discussion at about 22:30. The flip side to that would be I suppose that when the Doctor regenerates, they become physically, and, to some extent, mentally, a new man. This ‘youth’ counterbalances his actual age somewhat. So, a relationship with a human based on this apparent age is not completely unfathomable, imo.

There is definitly romantic undertones to the relationship between the third Doctor and Jo Grant. That is the closest to the Ten/Rose deal.
@ClaireWW
@ClaireWW 8 күн бұрын
The way to think about regeneration is that the whole body regenerates, and crucially that includes the brain. Whilst some part of personality comes from memory, another part comes with the physical composition of the brain, and some things are systemic and sexual orientation is one of those things that are hard wired. 9 was fairly asexual, but he loved Rose, and subconsciously felt bad about not being able to reciprocate what she wanted, so when he died his subconscious influenced the new man he became.

This was the first episode of doctor who I ever watched, although it would have been a rerun as I watched it in about 2010. I didn't become a fan of the show until 2011/2012 when I went back and watched all of Matt Smith's episodes that had aired until that point. Anyway, this episode really scared me when I watched it for the first time.

Alex started his point with such vitriol, then contradicted himself almost immediately @44:15 to @44:40. So Disney does request that certain changes be made? Oh yeah but they're good changes (subjective) So that's ok. The only reason i'm mentioning it, is because of the acrimony.

0:40 "Former Flydale MP". So strictly speaking she would still be MP. The Prime Minister is still an MP. Keir Starmer, as well as being Prime Minister, is also MP for Holbern & St Pancras, though how much MP-specific work he does, I don't know. Rishi Sunak was (And still is) MP for Richmond, Boris Johnson was Uxbridge etc. So Harriet is presumably still MP for Flydale North. 4:50 That's a phone booth. Police boxes are LONG gone. (And frankly phone boxes are uncommon. I couldn't tell you where one is in my local area.) 35:45 This is an argument made by people from Spanish-speaking countries. Because it's not called "America" in Spanish, they think the whole world should do that. But actually, virtually every single language on Earth calls the country "America". It's the Spanish-speakers who are weird. 43:42 So this is a thing I've pondered myself. I believe the original Star Wars film is actually not a very good movie in its own right, it's only good as part of the larger story. So I think it would flop now. But much like Doctor Who, it was successful because there was nothing else like it.

Although if Flydale North was a very marginal seat then it's possible Harriet Jones might have switched constituencies for a safer seat in her party's heartland after she was suddenly catapaulted up to leadership.

Genuinely do not care about the age difference those two are in love. Nobody will ever tell me different and convince me it is wrong. They balanced each other out and I genuinely don’t think he used his superior knowledge as a way to display a power dynamic over her. She had a better emotional intelligence and helped him that way. Christopher Eccleston always says how he played it as the doctor and rose were equals bar scientific knowledge .

From what I understand, they were writing to this romance into the show from the start of Eccleston. But Eccleston had no interest in portraying a romantic relationship with such a large age gap and that may have played into why he left.

I'll be honest i always hated the romance between the Doctor and the companions since Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker have all established in interviews that the Doctor is an a-sexual being and i couldn't imagine Rose being attracted to the Doctor if this was William Hartnell it just feel strange . Also just on the Terry Nation subject let's not forget if it hadn't had been for him and his creation of the Daleks Dr. Who would had ended in 1963. I also very highly recommend checking out Terry Nation's other work such as "Blake's 7" and "Survivors" which were both a success.

Define “woke” without mentioning women, people of colour, disabilities, the LGBT Community and different religions. Doctor Who has been “woke” since the 60s: Sydney Newman (a Canadian immigrant) came up with the show, Verity Lambert (a Jewish woman) was the original producer and Warris Hussein (a gay/Indian man) was the first director. The second story introduced nazi-like characters called Daleks, the Jon Pertwee (3rd Doctor) era touched on politics and the environment a lot, along with having the character of the Doctor dress in drag. The Sun Makers (a Tom Baker (4th Doctor) story) was about tax, Vengeance on Varos (a Colin Baker (6th Doctor) story was about the ban on “video nasties”: horror films and p*rn, The Happiness Patrol (a Sylvester McCoy (7th Doctor) story) took the mick out of Margaret Thatcher and has queer themes. Series 1-4 in 2005-2010 by Russell T Davies (a gay man) had multiple gay, lesbian and bi characters along with the character of Casandra in this story was confirmed to be trans in The End of the World (S1, ep 2) and companions of colour. The same goes for Series 5-10 in 2010-2017 by Steven Moffat, Series 11-13 in 2018-2022 by Chris Chibnall and Series 14 this year by Russell T Davies, again. Also, quite a few of the female companions are able to handle themselves (kick ass): Barbara, Zoe, Liz, Sarah Jane, Romana (a female Time Lord aka Time Lady), Tegan, Ace, Grace, Rose, Martha Donna, Amy, River, Clara, Bill, Yaz and Ruby. The Doctor, the Master and multiple Time Lords have regenerated into the opposite gender or a different race throughout. So on your bike with your anti-“woke” stance. It’s not welcome here, on other reaction channels or in the fandom itself.
