I love these $150 SPL challenges. Reminds me of being a teenager with a limited budget trying to get the biggest bang for the buck. I’m wondering what type of numbers you’d hit in a properly ported box or a 4th order box. If I remember correctly the Titans require a large box cubic ft or infinite baffle but I can’t remember. As much as I loved this box and the splatter design I think it would make for some great videos to try out different box designed in the suburban to see if you can hit 140+ You have plenty of room and I think it’s absolutely possible!

For those wondering the enclosure specs... This is 7cft sealed and the subs call for 2.64cft ea, so we’re definitely undersized here. I've been getting some really good deals on used gear I've been buying subwoofers with ripped cones and maybe little holes or something in the surround and doing pretty good repairs on them to where it's not even noticeable that they've been repaired. I got two Fosgate 12 punch he with holes in the cones. I superglued the whole s*** and then use a little spot glazing putty to make it look good again and then a coat of paint. Did the same thing with another pair of Fosgate p2 12s but sold and Bartered them already 4 cash and another set of 2 12 that were kicker comps that had tracked cones or just covers in this case I suppose. Sold them already also paid 35 bucks for the box and damaged speakers 414 the other one I paid 30 bucks for the 2/12 and the box and the last one was the Fosgate P2 12in paid 50 bucks for that in the Fosgate box with the two subwoofers. Sold them for 200 without the box and got some other hiphonix 12s also. I sold the kickers for 140 bucks in the box so some good profit and some good gear for little money that I could use in that challenge I think I don't know do does the Gear have to be purchased brand new for the SPL challenge?

Rob, that throwback sub box is awesome. Splatter FTW! Break those subs in for a few days and do your run in the Suburban again. Only next time lower your second row of seats forward to about a 20 degree incline. Don't just lay them flat. You might need to put something in between to keep a slight bit of elevation. Then retest. You should see a slight increase in dB. 👍

All I seem to hear from sub freaks is speaker cones vibrating, they are not meant to be driven that much. I know you turned it lower though. You can not get more by putting a larger amp on, they have their limits based on the resonant surface area of the speakers. The best speakers for sub bass are no dome only cone polyresin IMPP. Polycarbonates are too hard. Aluminium have tighter bass. Domes are for Hard beats. Great fun though, thanks.

@@HifiVega Ahh ok. That makes more sense. I had a small thought. I wonder if they were causing a small amount of cancellation to the mic. In one instance I did see a tangible effect on an spl test, though admittedly many other times the effect was always negligible. That one instance may have had other stuff going on... It was a pretty desperate day of DB drags to eak out an extra .3 of a DB to beat out my buddies tahoe.... I did it, but i cooked the sub in the process.... :(

Hey quick question I bought these from parts express to freshen up some 25 yo Kenwood 10" wedge truck speakers,, Ive never bought cheapie drivers like this but figured hey $11 pffft dirt cheap and have good reviews whatever i can't go wrong... well I think maby I was wrong? They had them listed as full range woofer saying "great for a party speaker" and in reviews people said they were using them as regular speaker woofers and worked great, I see u are using them as subs, and when I opened them they say "subwoofer" on the dust cap... Also the truck boxs is ported and they sound fluttery sounding and just plain awful, but if I cover the port they smooth out ok... What gives, are they not like ported enclosures...I wanted them as a full range speaker in my pickup to go with my fosgate sub for little more sound, but now I'm wondering how well they will even work as a full range...

Aaron Waltz I think it might need a sealed box, but these are definitely more woofer than subwoofer

I would try a couple bags of polyfill put in the box it may hit a little lower just a thought anything for SPL

analogaudio rules that’s just a frequency sweep called system checka and can be found on most bass mechanik cds

Could you explain why you did that way please? I'm still sitting here wondering Merry Christmas by the way. Was I wrong is this an acceptable way of doing it?

I just got back into car audio again about 6 months ago. And I'm wondering if I missed something since I was gone. I'm 50 now and was into it back in the 90s. I've been kicking around the idea of doing this SPL challenge if it's still going I guess it is obviously. Is there any where I can go to find any rules or anyting?
@HifiVega2 жыл бұрын
This enclosure is about 1/4 of the airspace they require so I’m using a common chamber to kinda help cheat the small amount of airspace. The Old School SPL Challenge won’t be live again until next year, but you can find the rules here facebook.com/groups/oldschoolspl2019/

Where did these sins come from I'm looking for something cheap to go in a Honda I just bought just for work travel. Great video. Love the box
Because the enclosure is undersized that's the reason it was short of 150db mark. Remove those 4 subwoofers and put them in the new sealed box of the same size. Definitely two sealed boxes will produce more SPL.

@@HifiVega Yup you're right. Ive been studying about transmission line enclosure because I'm fascinated by the sound of Bose Acoustic Wave Music System CD-2000 I repaired recently. It sounds big (especially in a distance) for such a small single woofer hidden in its compact enclosure.
