I've got both the Y and the Ioniq 5, keeping the Ioniq 5 because it's quieter, has less blind spots and has free charging for 2 years. Less costly overall and is a great car.
@jakopberg3 жыл бұрын
You missed • electric adjustable backseat/ boot space • blind spot camera in dashboard when turning on indicators • adjustable center console • good looks 😁 The Y cost a fair bit more here. So you could say price too. Obviously you haven’t driven the Ionic 5. I’m choosing between the two But to get to test drive the Y in Norway turn out to be tricky. Tesla seams to have no interest in booking test drives.
@fredrikfjeld15752 жыл бұрын
I test drove both here in Norway and Tesla let me test drive the car, even when I came in when they were closing, so I kept the guys at work for half an hour longer. Then I got a over night test drive, which I had during the worst weather in years. When it comes to price, if you want the glass roof and everything the Model Y has, not choosing metallic paint, then the total costs comes to 570k nok. About 10K less than the Model Y. Interest on your loan will cost 30-40k more for 5 years for the Ioniq 5, which makes the total price of the Ioniq 5 higher than the Model Y. If you choose not to have the glass roof, then the price falls to 550k. They gave me a price of 61 000 kr for serivce up to 120 000 km. That is more than an XC90 and way, way more than the ID4 and Model Y. So cost of ownership is also a lot higher for the Ioniq 5. It might be that the seller put in the wrong model for the service deal, or he thought me gullible. Either way, the sellers at both Tesla and Møller, did not recommend a service deal for electric veichles and Møller were just a lot more proffesional as well. But things you do not get on the Ioniq 5, is visibility through your headlights during a Norwegian winter. I have not tested this at night, but the placement of those headlights made it so after the two hours I was driving, you could hardly see the headlights at all. Did not have the same problem with the ID4 and Model Y in the same conditions. Space. I would say you have around twice the usable space in the Model Y compared to the ID4 and Ioniq 5. The well beneath the trunk, the much larger trunk and the frunk makes a huge difference that you do not really notice until you try to put in a dog cage or something like it. Storage room in the front. THe open area with the adjustable center removes pretty much all storage space to create a feeling of spaceiousnes, which gives little back. Your phone is also hidden away when charging, so you can't see if that notification was something critical, without taking your eyes of the road. A functional map that can plan trips. I plot in Stockholm in all the cars, because the trip will require at least one charging stop. The ID4 and Model Y showed were to charge, how long and the total trip time. The Ioniq 5 wanted me to charge right away, even with a 80% battery. It did not show any useful information at all... The map is also worse than any other car I have driven (except a 2021 Toyota Corolla rental, which does not have any side roads on the map at all. I was just driving out on a field the whole time). Voice commands. None of them worked. Motor.no didn't get it to work either. Worked flawlessly in the Tesla and almost flawlessly in the ID4. There are so many other quality of life problems as well. You have physical buttons, which is great, but not for the things you normally use. Media opens up a slide on the screen where you have to chose between bluetooth and radio... Why can't it remember which one you are using? It has buttons for navigation AND for the map. They are the same thing! Remove one, put down phone instead. The Ioniq 5 has many buttons which just opens something for you to choose on the screen. That removes the whole point of having buttons to begin with... Take seat heating and cooling. Press the button, then move your hand 30-40 cm up to the screen to press either down for cooling or up for heating. Then, if you do not want it to go on full, move your hand either 5 cm up or down again so you can press either up or down to adjust. I adjust my heated seats all the time. You move your hands 43 cm more than on the Model Y, 45 cm more than the ID4. You have to press three different places. It takes so much attention away from the road. It is one of the worst designs I have seen for something you use all the time. People complain that the Tesla now requires you to go into a menu. Well, the Ioniq 5 has that, only 10 times worse. Tesla can fix it with a software update, the Ioniq 5 cannot. The head-up display was fuzzy and of a lot lower quality than the ID4 one. It, like most of the head ups, is also invisible with my sunglasses (the ID4 was a little better, so again with the quality), which means you have to see your speed on the screen instead. Which of course is hidden entirely behind the wheel. Which means that I had to move my whole upper body to see how fast I was going. Never had a car which this was such a huge problem in before. People complain about the Tesla, but I didn't have to move my head at all to see the speed in the Y. The ID4 also has the speed just right there in the middle. No problems at all. I went to test drive these cars, thinking that I would end up buying the Ioniq 5. For me, with the price being higher than the Model Y, longer delivery date and the worst experience I have had with a user interface in any modern car, it just isn't worth it. If you could get the same car, without the glass roof, for around 50 000 less, then maybe. You can get the ID4 for a lot less than the other two, but the loan, again, adds 30k to the price, over 5 years. That means you just end up with a slightly less expensive car that has half the things the Model Y has as standard. And I need the space. So having test driven all three cars, I found the Ioniq 5 to be the worst of them, for my everyday use. Even though there is a lot of positive sides of the Ioniq 5 (seats, the ride, android auto (though it is through a cabled connection, which just means that you have to leave your phone near the floor, have a cable that can hook your right leg and create accidents, and makes the open solution in the car useless), the passenger seats, head up display (though far from a "good" one) and more) they are just to few for the price and how frustrating everything is for what I use the most.

@@justobserving4862 I have many more opinions about all three of the cars and could have written pretty much the same amount as above, just about the map on the Ioniq 5. It would however have taken me a lot of time. There is a lot to like about the car, but it was annoying as hell. It also muted the stereo (which I hope for the owners sake is an option you can turn off) every time it thought I was crossing a line. It is snow on the road, so it thought I was crossing lines all the time! It gave an alert and muted the stereo at least 10 times in 4-5 minutes. Again, compable with the Toyota Corolla I had to drive for a month. That car didn't just give an alert, but tried to steer the car when it thought I was driving over lines. The car actively tried to drive me off the road. Wisely I saw that the same function was turned off on the demo car from Hyundai. And I don't think I mentioned 1-pedal driving, which the car can't remember, so you have to manually turn it on every time you start it. Just why. Imagine always using 1-pedal driving, and then forgetting to turn it on only once, it like a year. That is the way you hit someone walking over the street or rear end someone. There is a lot of positive things to say about the Hyundai as well, and most reviewers are great at mentioning those. Few mention the faults though.

On the other hand, its frunk is much smaller. There is room underneath it to be larger, and Hyundai should increase its size in future models. You made a point which I believe is incorrect: that an 800 volt charger reduces heat in battery cells. I'm sure that's wrong. 800 volt chargers generate less heat *in the charging cables.* There is less resistance in the cables. 800 volt electrical systems within a car *also* generate less heat *within the car's cables.* It's easier to *deliver to the car* electricity at a higher rate with an 800 volt charging system. There's a small improvement in energy loss with higher voltage systems during charging, too, but it's not very much. Heat in the cell has nothing to do with any of that. *That* heat is the product of electrons moving between electrodes within each cell. The car's electrical system will step down the voltage to what each cell needs as it charges. And *that* is software-controlled. Since Hyundai is achieving faster charging *in the battery pack,* they have made an engineering decision to stress their cells more than many other electric car brands. This opens up a can of worms. How will this decision affect the degradation curve for Hyundai's packs? The car is too new to have a public track record on this. It's conceivable that Hyundai's extra fast charging speeds will turn out to be a *disadvantage.* I'm not sure what kind of cells are in the Ioniq-5, but I suspect it's either pouch or prismatic. Both are form factors which place cooling farther away from where chemical activity is taking place within the cell. Pouch cells, such as those found in the Chevy Bolt, are particularly notorious for developing hot spots that cooling is too far away to prevent. Probably worse is the air-cooled pack found in the Nissan Leaf. Air cooling works great when it's frigid outside, but poorly when it's hot. Engineering decisions about form-factor, cooling *and* how to limit cell stress all play into charging speed; it's not just about the charger's voltage. The point I'm making is that a lot of variables are being juggled by every manufacturer when it comes to charging speed. It's not enough to change the voltage and call it a day. The cell form-factor matters. The cooling system matters. And software matters, because that controls how much stress is inflicted on cells. When a manufacturer crows about how much faster they can charge their packs, that's the *start* of a conversation, not the end of it. Whether its an advantage is a complicated question, and it's a question that is really only answerable when plenty of data over time comes to our eyeballs That's data we haven't seen for the Ioniq-5. But my guess is, to achieve such startling charging advantages, while using either pouch or prismatic cells, they've made a trade-off decision between cycle life and charging speed that might inflict an inferior degradation curve on consumers. I might be wrong about that, though. It depends on their other engineering decisions. When Tesla's tabless 4680 cells get into their cars, I would expect faster charging speeds *and* longer cycle life, because electron paths within the cell will be short, the cylindrical form-factor favors cooling close to where chemistry is happening, and because Tesla is really good at engineering software and cooling solutions. Those factors are far, far, far more important to charging speed + cycle life than switching to 800 volt chargers.
@emceh3 жыл бұрын
Yes the cells themselves are getting the same amount of current as on 400V systems unless Hyundai would be able to fit in like 150kWh pack in the same dimensions it has now. To me 800V gives some efficiency savings (lighter cabling, more efficient components that generate less heat) but maybe it's just preparation for the future when new cells are being developed with greater energy density. I have also tracked both charging sessions and compared to Tesla Model 3, Ioniq 5 is charging maybe 10% faster that translates to like few minutes longer charging sessions during long trips. So nothing revolutionary here except media hype. So I don't think they stress theirs cells that much.
@Urgelt3 жыл бұрын
@@emceh To be fair, it's Hyundai itself which is claiming much faster charging speeds. It's not *just* media hype, it's an actual claim. But let's say you're right about Hyundai's 10% faster charging. 10% faster charging than a Tesla, if using great big pouch cells which can develop hot spots, would represent a very aggressive tradeoff: faster charging speed at the expense of cell stress and cycle life.

I think it is worth mentioning that the V2L functionality supports loads up to 3.6 kW in countries using 230 / 240 volt electricity. That makes a difference, making it possible to use tools like a table saw with a proper capacity that usually require > 2kW power. That is great when building something at a cabin equipped only with a few solar panels and also when camping and frying your sausages with an electric grill. When using V2L to save the day of another BEV owner, is it really so that the V2L first converts DC into AC and then again to DC with that trickle charger? That has to be inefficient, and terribly limiting especially on those countries using that 120-volt outlets.

Hey everyone, Just watched this comparison between the Ioniq 5 and the Tesla Model Y. Spoiler alert: Ioniq 5 all the way for me! Here's why: First off, the new 2025 Ioniq 5 models have some pretty sweet upgrades - a rear window wiper (finally!), increased range, and even better instruments. And let's talk design: the Ioniq 5 looks like something different and unique, a real head-turner compared to the cookie-cutter Chinese/Tesla soap bar look. I mean, who wants to drive a bar of soap? And don’t get me started on the interiors. With the Ioniq 5, you get a heads-up display (HUD), so all your speed and navigation info is right in front of you. No more looking down and to the right - honestly, whose idea was that? The HUD is not just convenient, it's safer and way more relaxing. Sure, Tesla has more power and range, but let's be real here. Most cars today offer more than enough power to get you into trouble with speeding tickets. Whether my car goes 0-100 km/h in 2-3 or 5 seconds, the only real difference is how soon I'll need new tires! Some folks buy a Tesla just to keep up with the neighbors, and that's fine if it makes them happy. But for me, the Ioniq 5 is where it’s at. It’s got style, it’s got comfort, and it’s got everything you need without the extra fuss. Cheers to those who see the charm in something different!

It would helpful for the ev information y tubers to dig a little deeper and discuss such engineering design decisions and any Inovations which have gone into these new evs. I would appreciate to find out what does the first true ground up designed Hyundai get me the consumer; more efficiency, longer range, better power management which might enable longer battery life and minimize degradation. Lets start talking about the true benefits of the new evs and what makes them stand out from others. We should be finding out if their motors are efficient, well made and designed with less weight than peers. We also need to find out if the components will be long lived and not be designed to break down. As less expensive options become available from manufacturers from China, we need to know if not only are they well made but if they will hold up. I want to know if the design is good and is well made.

I have a Tesla MY on order, estimated delivery November. The I5 Limited is tempting. With the tax credit, about $12,500 less. In addition to the points you mentioned, the I5 Limited also has an upgraded equivalent to Ford BlueCruise, rear cross traffic alert/assist, forward cross traffic alert/assist and left turn into oncoming traffic alert/assist. Of course, time will tell how well these features work. I have a 2018 Kia and LKA is terrible. And, I have seen plenty of YT videos where Tesla didn’t even attempt to stop to avoid running into someone. However, Tesla has a proven records of software updates vs zero for my Kia. OTOH, H/K dealers are everywhere should I need service. If Tesla included FSD as standard, it would be a no brained for me. However, unless Tesla offers a MY SR, maybe with LFP batteries and at a $10k lesser price, I will most likely get the I5. ALSO NOTE, the 2023 I5 should also have V2G capability, something VW also announced will be available next year via OTA upgrade on all their existing ID.3 and ID.4. It appears that Tesla is really falling behind its competitors on MANY fronts important to us buyers.

Man it's surprising just how difference Tesla and other EV's can be on the other side of the pond. Here in Europe, Tesla ánd other brands use the same CCS-Type2 combo connector, and here in The Netherlands Tesla superchargers are open to non-Tesla cars (while Tesla also added other networks to their super charging network/navigation map). It really makes EV's so much more viable. It also improves Tesla. While you could argue it removes a bit of a competition element, in the end, I doubt anyone's waiting for 8 different charging infrastructures. Plugging in a Ioniq next to a Model-Y on a Fastned charger (350kW) does mean the station itself might balance though in some locations :D - I think the "everything is 3 phase 240v" power infrastructure of Europe makes a large difference as well though for destination charging. Still: I recently had to order a new car, and I gave all brands a fair shot. Including Tesla. As a 2 meter tall person though, I could fit comfy in Tesla, but the drive and tech in the Ioniq was just leagues ahead for Hyundai (tested Hyundai, VW, Kia, Tesla, Ford Mustang, Polestar, Skoda).
@DiscoveryOwners3 жыл бұрын
ADAS is a big thing with me. From other YT actual drives, this seems lacking a bit on Hyundai. Active LKA on my Kia is terrible and Kia refuses to fix. OTOH, Tesla service is 50 miles away. I would probably choose the Genesis variant as it has power steering wheel and nicer interior and doesn’t carry as much the low class stigma of Hyundai/Kia.

@RussInGA3 жыл бұрын
@@janisb.9986 that is going to affect how many KW of energy can be pulled from the charger. The xformer actually introduces another inefficiency. You cannot charge at a rate faster than the charger can deliver the juice. It does sound like it probably charges well compared to many.. they 800v just isnt the big boost it is made to sound like. It does mean more batteries in parallel so charging will be quicker if you can get the full amount of juice. Like others have said I'd like to see it's 10% +200 miles range charge time. These other times dont mean much.
@honsinglee48053 жыл бұрын
@@RussInGA for the same 400V charger (e.g. 150kW), it can delivery faster to the ioniq 5 because the car's internal inverter will step up the 400V to 800V and along the way, reduce heat while charging. with less heat, the high charge rate can be maintained longer, hence shortening the charging time.
@RussInGA3 жыл бұрын

Also, you can see out of the back window vs Teslas Y that you almost can't see. Mention how hard and uncomfortable the suspension is of the Tesla Y model, or how everyone is complaining about how bad the service department/customer service is. The Tesla is faster and longer range. Everything else from the ionic is superior to Tesla Y and if something goes wrong, Hyundai is all over the country ready to help. Although Tesla has more charging stations, they don't have great many service departments. Better hope nothing goes wrong with the Tesla :)

This may be different in Europe and the US, but here, the Model Y has a max carrying capacity of 315kg (excluding a "75kg driver") This is ridiculously low. Compared to several cars, even the Ioniq 5 has a low number, but it is still over 100kg more than the Model Y, the Ioniq 5 can carry 445kg (pluss the "average 75kg driver") This disqualifies the Model Y for us and many others. This is something I feel should be talked about a lot more in reviews of the cars. Of Tesla cars, only the Model X has a good carry capacity. Even the Model S, a LARGE car, has max 329kg... Quite absurd.

Take another look at the charge math. While charging to 80% takes longer, you’re comparing apples to oranges. If the Ioniq5 can charge to 180 miles in 18 minutes on a 250+ charger, how long to add 180 miles to the model Y on v3 250+? 55% should take about 16 minutes based off published charge curves widely available and verified. 18 minutes is longer than 16 minutes to add 180 miles. I love Hyundai but it doesn’t charge faster for real world use. It’s very good, but not faster.
@johnpoldo88173 жыл бұрын
I think you are correct. This is why I do not like vendors quoting a 10-80% charge time. 80% of what? A much better measure is how long does it take to achieve 100, 200, or 300 miles from a low state of charge.
@spleck6153 жыл бұрын
@@johnpoldo8817 correct. 200mi is the sweet spot for general use. That’s 80% on a taycan or standard range Tesla, and 60% on a long range Tesla. I guess it would be 85% on the Ioniq 5? Apples to apples. Miles to miles.

Some states still have incentives for Tesla's like California's Clean Vehicle Rebate Project $2k rebate. Also since the Ioniq 5 are sold at dealerships, you are seeing large mark ups of around $2k. I have the Model 3 and love it. Of these, I would like the roof glass shade and charging from the Model 3 "to load" and AC power source. Heads up display is gimmicky and a nuisance to me. I never have an issue noting my speed from the large Tesla display. The others like the ventilated seats are cost saving items rather than design features.

I have the feeling that every new ev that comes out is better than the tesla counterpart! Sure some of them arent that quick, but to be honest, who cares about a 3.5 or 5.5 sec. 0 - 60? all evs are damn quick even a Renault zoe! The superchargers are a good point but only for people who travel a lot! For Ev owners who mostly charge at home and go on a holiday trip once a year the supercharger network doesent even matter really! So the both strongest arguments for a tesla dont even count for most people, why would you choose a Model Y or 3 over an Ioniq 5 or an EV6, or an ID3/ID4? Why would you choose a Model S over an Audi E-tron GT or a Taycan? Could you maybe make a comparison the other way around to see why Tesla is still worth the Money?
