On the "testing with new faces" point. We're supposed to be getting paid for this, that was always the way. It seems like it all ended about ten to 15 years ago when agencies became less professional and run by people with little to no experience in the industry. They have a completely skewed vision of how value works and where they fit into the equation. Most agencies now are quasi pyramid schemes and ultimately don't make as much money booking models as the old school agencies did. There's like 500% more agency clutter now and they're all fighting over the same work. They literally don't understand "making investments" into talent. Shooting a new face has no value to an experienced photographer other than money. Shooting this WORK used to be, and still could be a valuable tool in our earning cycle. It has value to the model and he agency because an inexperienced model gets training and experience shooting with a pro, and sometimes a whole team, before they're on set with a client. The agency gets professional photos for the models book which they need to get the model bookings with paying clients. Without money the photographer gets nothing but tired.

Excellent tips! People have reached out to me for their senior photos and college graduation but I have turned them down because it does not align with my kind of passionate work.

95% of the photographers claiming to be "fashion photographers" are not "fashion photographers", they are just photographers photographing people wearing (fashion?) clothes…

Hi Kayleigh i am a recent subscriber i just wondered if you coukd advise me on the best zoom focal range for portraits please I use Nikon D7200 its a cropped frame but it's a great camera Love your vids
@KayleighJune3 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith! It really depends on your style of work and how you like to photograph. However, I usually would always recommend having a 24-70mm (or similar range) for shooting portraits, it's a great "all-rounder" lens!

Great video and advise, however, the speed of your speech/talking should slowed down a notch or two

man talk about the timing of this video. i had like 5 models in a row show interest in a project im working on. but there was only a couple that i liked.... but i went ahead and said yes to everyone because i need content. but im like, probably not going to really use all the photos unless it fits a very specific need or brand.... sighs

Ugh I know that feeling too well! Especially when you know even before shooting that you likely won't be using the photos for anything! It's a common habit haha. 😂
@aubreetippetts6343 жыл бұрын
Are you supposed to charge for test shoots? I’m new to this haha
@KayleighJune3 жыл бұрын
Not usually, but it does depend. You can quite often use test shoots as an opportunity for unpaid collaborative portfolio work. Or sometimes , a potential client (whether it be a model agency or aspiring model,) may approach you for paid tests. But generally it refers to a collaboration. :)

Concepts, I try so hard but I can't stick to them. I'm okay at photography and well known in my own area. I just end up winging everything. Been published over 300 times and have made a full career out of it. Concepts and themes are high anxiety. I can't do it.

I am guilty with no. 7. It's tough, stil struggling with it honestly. Oftentimes the photo looks great but then again, ill end up scratching my head asking myself: "Where's the fashion in this?"

Haha, me also! I think it comes down to the planning and research stage more than anything, it's something I'm trying to focus more on this year 😊
