I know watched this one previously but watched it again... even though I have chickadees right outside right now. Just wanted to mention, with your love of chickadees, you should really check out the New Zealand Fantail.... They always reminded me of chickadees and nuthatches, but they're slightly larger with a big (fan) tail that the sway back and forth... The tumble and flutter much like chickadees do, but even more pronounced. And, if it's possible, they're friendlier .. easily the most curious/friendly bird species I've ever interacted with. They will follow you on a forest trail or in a backyard... just to see what the heck you're up to. The closest I've ever felt to being in a Disney cartoon was when being followed by a fantail or two. :D

Now that Ive learned they are my favorites! One even ate out of my hand for the first time yesterday! I love how I can tell you find them so genuinely adorable. And you taught me a lot!

These birds have straight up smashed my winter depression. Winter work hours are frighteningly lean, so a cheap hobby lately has just been walking. I walked out to a little peninsula nearby (Belle Island, Kingston), and these little guys started following me. I didn't believe it till there were like 5 of them; one nearly flew into the side of my head. I put my hand up, to see if they'd land on it, and immediately one did. I didn't even have food, it warmed my heart. I've gone back about 6 times now, with seeds, and they always eat them out of my hand. I've seen another group feeding them, having a blast. They're just so charismatic. Now I've upgraded to suet. I hope to see a chubby gang of birds by spring. Thanks to them, I'm walking way more. Getting my audiobooks in. I'm even making sure I wake up early on my days off to have enough daylight for the walk. I'm also noticing the nuthatches and woodpeckers getting more familiar with me. These chickadees are converting me to a full blown bird nerd. Never saw that coming. Thanks for teaching me about them!

I'm very much the same way. Winters are a rough time of year for me, but the forest is my happy place, and the more I learn about birds, the more enamoured I become. I've been trying harder overall (I'm the dictionary definition of a layabout) because of my chickadee friends. I can only hope to become as strong as them someday.

The name alone is one of my favorite things about them. When I finally looked up the bird with the cute name I'd heard for years, I was not disappointed. And I thought it was fascinating that when the two kinds of chickadees mate, the offspring's call is an even split between the parents' calls. Usually in nature you don't get that perfect split between parental traits but it's like the birds can't choose which parent to copy so they just split the difference.

CenturianEagle Cardinals are so shy. Mine come in the evening when it is almost too dark to see. If a storm is forecast I will take down my feeder pans for the night, so I wait and watch till they leave. And they are always the earliest too! I think their caution makes ‘your’ bird act that way.

Excellent Lesley! These little birds are my favorite 'feeder buddies' for sure. While I haven't had as much overall success as you with getting them to feed off my hands, the chickadees were the first species to do so and they continue to hop on my hand/arm whenever I'm out doing feeder maintenance. I've had to chase them to a nearby branch more than once as they seem to want to hop on my arm/hand while I'm trying to fill feeders. I have two pair in particular that I've been feeding and watching for over 3 years now so they definitely benefit from the winter feeder access (we're in NW Wisconsin). Now if I could just get the woodpeckers to come to my hand I would be doubly thrilled! ha! (we feed 7 species of woodpeckers everyday during the winter - 9 total during the warm months).

They're so cute!! And their calls and singing are so lovely ♡ I always used to listen to them in the morning at 7~AM, waiting for the bus and enjoying the sunrise (or stars in winter lol) when I was still in school. Rural living can be isolating but it definitely had perks

Oh I love these precious cuties! I try to whistle their song every day when I go out to feed all of my critters.Their songs are undeniable. I sure wish I could get them and the other babies to eat out of my hand....I'll just keep trying. In the meantime...their dee dee dee call and that little 'hey sweetie' whistle makes me smile every single morning! I love your channel....thank you so much!

Absolutely loved this - these are among my favs- I feed all year round , just recently was in the backyard and a chickadee kept fussing from a tree close by - I stopped long enough to ask him what he needed- I know sounds strange but I talk to all my birds that visit the feeders- well this little one was adamant that I ck the feeders- sure enough - they needed filling - after I filled them all he quickly quit chirping- grabbed a snack and moved on- so smart and so cute- loved your video and I’m now a new subscriber- we live in east Texas and have tons of birds that visit our feeders - so glad we’re also on the hummers’ flight path and have hundred every migration - coming and going

I am in western Massachusetts, the coldest and most rural part of the state. Chickadees are our state bird! My husband and I love how gentlemanly the chickadees are at the feeders. They wait their turn, and unlike the sparrows who sit at the feeders for extended periods, hogging all the spaces so no one else can get at the seed, the chickadees will stop by quickly, help themselves to one sunflower seed at a time and leave. They go flitting off to hide their food, then wait their turns again. Such nice little cuties. I really enjoy your bird videos and learn so much about the different bird visitors!

When I was younger I used to go deer hunting with my dad. These cute little birds would follow me and other hunters around. They would wait patiently or maybe impatiently for me to get a deer. When I got one, they would always get fat from the gut pile. This must have been a special treat because they would go out of their way to get it. They always seem like a happy bird but I'm sure they were happy when we got a deer.

Hi Leslie. This was fabulous and you've put so much information about these gorgeous birds into this; learning about their call was so interesting..it must be second nature for you hearing the birds' calls now..and being able to associate them to the particular bird. I think they're about the same size as our robins..maybe even smaller and I didn't know they would eat spiders and several kinds of insects too.You presented this so well Leslie in that wonderful unique style of yours and this is a fun way to learn about birds.Thumbs up any friend~~
