Everything she is saying is 100% true. I find when I wash my hair once a week it feels lighter and more fluffy and it’s fuller. If I go more than 2 weeks- cuz ya know life is life-ing- my hair feels flat scratchy and it just looks lifeless. So I try to wash my hair at least 2-3 x per month. Also a tip is to dilute your shampoo with distilled water even if it’s low suds because even rinsing for 20 min or more you can have shampoos residue in your hair. I wet my hair first then use a spray bottle to shampoo my roots first and then let the shampoo run down the length of my locs to get those clean.putting undiluted shampoo on your lots - you will never be able to rinse it out completely. As far as rety- for me waiting too long will result in breakage because just moving your hair around will distress those little hairs that are at the root. Now I have gone up to 3 months of not retightening my hair and I have regretted it as you have to be very meticulous about how you rety- mainly to make sure you don’t leave holes in your locs. Plus I feel just doing one or two turns on your roots after a month or 6 weeks is better than having to do a lot of separating and multiple turns after months. I have also noticed too that it depends on the hair texture my texture is somewhat loose and if there is a lot of loose hair at the roots it tangles and invariably it will break. I do my own retys but I’ve been locd since 2008 and I’ve learned a lot lessons lol

I agree with the retightening i use to go every six weeks now I go every eight weeks. I did suffer damaged follicles tension, hair thinning, soreness on my crown and aolpecia. My grid was a four now I switched to a 3. Went to see a trichologist about my hair thinning working to get my scalp back to its natural healthy scalp.

Our hair does not need oil when it is short. What we know about our hair generationally has led most black women to have short, slow growing, hair for CENTURIES as they chased a European sleekness and grease or oil helped straighten the hair. This has been inculcated to the point that EVEN NOW as we embrace our natural hair we still hang onto paradigms instilled in us under colonial oppression. Not all women are the same but the biggest pet peeve for many loctitians is the insistence of clients to use oil and then the upsetness of these same clients when their hair slips and their consultants start charging to correct that. The number 2 failure in microlocks is thinking slippage is cute ( it often is at first) and not understanding when those cute loose ends leads to knots and bunching. Then they want it "fixed" and expect to pay the minimum for their actions. This is one of the main reasons that over time I let over 80% of my clients go..I now only consult and repair but with bunching and slippage if the client keeps using oil and conditioner after repairs they are sent on their way. Waste of my time and their money. I make more money advising than repairing because people do not want to pay to undo their exploits. Occassionally people who have not yet fully locked want to get their locks taken out. To do this, I start by soaking their hair in deep conditioner and oil..why? Because it causes massive slippage. After it is rinsed out and dried I use oil again to tease the lock apart. Oil causes slippage and attracts and holds dirt. That is a fact no matter what else one thinks about oil use Oil also softens hair and can help slow moisture loss. BUT oil cannot moisturize..that is a different process and action from oil which softens and coats/protects the scalp and hair enamel. We have to be careful with touting use of products. For the first 5 years, my hair was shiny and soft/silky with not a drop of oil and other sisterlock wearers wanted to know what I used on my hair Distilled water. Occasionally I put red thyme in my water or soaked mint leaves in water and used that. It is not what I used it is jow I treated my hair. I stroked my locks from scalp to root to tip. That is called preening As I age I seem to produce less oils so I started using oils on my ends. I oil my scalp about 1x every 3 months. I prefer no products. My hair is shiny, very long, supple and shines..but I do draw down the oil applied from root to tip. IT cannot go as far as my hair is long now. After I do this, I wash it all out..BUT I use Tunisia's old super oily recipe for shampoo so I must say I still use oil. But straight greasing my scalp and hair? Never and my hair is extremely healthy almost 9 years in Sisterlocks Often it is not what we do or not do it is the way we do or not do that determines the condition of our hair. OIL IS NOT A MOISTURIZER. Water is the only moisturizer...oils and conditioners aid in retention of water or slow release of water to slow evaporation. I have very fine hair. I have sisterlocks. For the first 5 years of having SL I used no oil or conditioner. None. Not a dtop. I watered my hair and did add herbs to my water ( red thyme, and mint and at times rose water) My hair was glossier and silkier with no oil and cleaner rhan it has been since I started to oil my scalp. I still do not oil my hair exceot the ends and about the last 10 inches. So why did I return to using oil ?( I use it in my shampoo) Because I am older now and seem to not produce enough sebum to run down the length of my locks which are below my butt. So I augment by using oil in my shampoo then a tiny bit on my ends which are open coiled to this day. I also no longer water daily or even weekly. I hate having a wet head in the winter and don't want a wet head at night or wet work clothes in the morning. It is now so long that piling up on the head like Marge Simpson it gets lint from brushing the roof of my car. We need to be careful that during our growth and learning we are not going forward but still pushing and fitting old paradigms in this new process.

My loctitian advised me not to put water or oil my hair or I'll continue to have this problem. My scalp is so itchy and dry :( I'm trying to trust this process.

So glad you did this video. Can you talk about thin/ fine hair vs. Low density. I talk to some folks and some don't understand the difference. I have fine hair strands and I'm on the lower end of average density. In the sun sometimes you can see thru my hair, it's not dense. I use your oil (need to place another order for your oil cause I'm running low) and I see a improvement with my hair strength and thickness. Good things. My loctition always says my scalp looks real good. Love the channel 💚💚💚

Thin is not synonymous with fine. Thin hair is thinning aka balding hair. Fine hair relates to the diameter of the individual strand being smaller than thicker strand diameter. Fine hair is not thin hair.

This is hands down the BEST hair care video I’ve seen so far👍🏾 On the subject of oil, there’s no one size fits all… I’m 3c curly so it “appears” like I have more, but it’s low density… I need oil, I use oil… I’m spreading the retwist further apart, the goal is 4 times a year. I’m also pushing a 3 week wash schedule, I refreshen my hair with a cloth I saturate with with hazel in between washes… I’m 8 months into the loc journey; so far, it appears to be doing well and getting fuller. New subbie as of today✌🏾

I don’t know where you are from but it’s as if God dropped an angel on to my phone screen. I have fine, thinning and low density hair in the crown of my head. I am strongly considering the Locke journey, but am unsure of which locks to get. More importantly, I am concerned about obtaining a Loctician, who is not only knowledgeable, but will be concerned with the state of my hair as it is. I must admit I am a bit afraid but I am more afraid of doing nothing and contending with all the various methods that I use to feed my beauty esteem that are not working. I am ready to take the leap of faith. Thank you for your inspiring and knowledgeable video.

20:10 Thank you...thank you and thank you. I suspected it for long. Hmmm...have not heard of knotted locks before. I've had my locks over ten years..and I love them. I specifically kept my hair at shoulder length because I saw others that had long locks and thinning at the top and I didn't want to experience that. (Your locks are beautiful btw) Then, my hair started thinning at the top (I admit I made some slacking choices temporarily)...I watched countless videos, tried different hair routines like cloves/water, funnelgreek/water, deep conditioning, scalp detox, growth oils, and etc. I was at the point of taking my locks to get a style with very minimum hair manipulation. I took the official retighening class, and can do it fine, as I asked a certified lockticians to double check me, at first. Then, I noticed the longer I waited to retighen my hair, the better it was doing and my top started growing and filling back in. Now, I retighen in sections...maybe the sides this time. Then, weeks later the back and weeks after the back, I'll retighen the top (and not to scalp). Doing It this way has made a huge difference.

I do discuss this in the course. Perhaps consider the course or a consult, but the course may be more suitable. Sisterlocks may not be your first choice. You will likely need a larger size loc to proactively plan for future issues that can be naturally occurring with small locs.

I am 11 months into my start loc journey. I can’t wait until my locs mature. Currently I only retwist 5-6 weeks. But when they mature I’m going to try to extend to 8-10 weeks. I have small locs and took inspo from micro locs when I started them but I knew I didn’t want too many locs where I felt like it was a job bc I self maintain. I want to make sure I keep my locs strong and healthy. I’d hate to have thinning and breakage! My hair isn’t very thin but it can get weak and brittle. Thanks for the video!

Be mindful of adding hair as it adds more weight. Those areas are already fatigued and likely have less hair integrity. They are weakened. You might want to wait and get those areas health first or avoid it altogether. A Google search my yield some valuable info on extensions or perhaps Instagram.

Are you balding? If so your hair is not thin, it is fine in diameter.

Can hair loss around the Edges and crown grow back by itself once you stop wearing doing the wrong things to your hair ie wearing caps and retighting too often?

It's possible, but supporting the follicles and supplementing is likely what the hair needs since it's been traumatized.

Question 🤚🏾 So I’m getting sister locs installed soon and I have less than 5 inches of hair. Wearing a satin/silk lined cap on my head will hinder my growth or affect the outcome of my locs?

Personally, I think that is a great idea. I wish I had been more consistent. I don't see how it will hurt at all. I SEE AND EXPERIENCED ONLY BENEFITS.

Just be sure to only do it b4 going to bed. Your Hair needs sunlight and oxygen.
