I absolutely love foot sweeps but can’t really get the timing on a lot of them. Great video.

They are hard to do when someone has a good stance. It works when they are upright, like a judo or greco stance. And since you can’t block or sweep feet in greco, it won’t be that often that you can get a clean one…especially with a shoe that is designed to grip the mat. Not that you can’t, because we had two judokas on my college wrestling team who did it to everyone. The only “sweeps” are deashi hari and okuriashi harai. The rest are not sweeps, but blocks. We make a distinction in judo. Ouchi gari, ko uchi gari, sasae, osoto gari, are not sweeps. Osoto in no way resembles a sweep. It’s essentially a backwards direction head and arm. Ko soto gari could be a sweep, depending on the kuzushi. So while they can be useful, they can be countered easily with leg attack if not careful. For example, the counter to sasae back when we had leg attacks (like single legs) in judo was to literally grab his leg. That’s why the technique evolved to have a straight leg and block low, because a higher block will result in a leg grab. Put in a good wrestling stance and shoes, and the success rate plummets. Again, you can, I know people who have, but I was D1 and had excellent judokas on my team and never developed them in wrestling.

So many wrestlers I know would watch like two of these sweeps, then proceed to kick somebody's ankles so hard 😭

Thanks for this video. I'm on technique number 3, and this is the most common trip I face against my pool of opponents/training partners. Is the best defence to step over the tripping leg and trip back? Is that true for all of these?
