For anyone that has a hard time with their pinky, i have never struggled with my pinky because i play violin. My violin students strugle with their pinky a lot, so i recomend them doing "pinky push ups". Ypu just put your hands on your knees so that they curve, and keep that same shape (like if you were holding a ball) and move it to a flat surface (like a table) and only touch it with the tips of your fingers (but keep the curved hand) and lift your pinky up and down several times. Make sure your pinky stays curved when you lift it, you are lifting it up, not making it straight. This is for your left hand, and you can do this anywhere and anytime. I assign that for a week and for the next lesson they are ready to use their fourth finger. Playing power chords with the third and fourth finger (ring and pinky) also help, make sure you arpegiate the power chord to make sure it sounds clean. Your pinky will be strong in no time! Disclaimer: i am not a guitarist and i am barely teaching mysel, but i have progressed decently fast due to my background on violin. I also teach piano and this is an excercize i apply both to my violin students and my piano students and it works great!

@logotrikes Жыл бұрын
Great comment dude. So it's not just me then? I thought the spaces impossibly small, how could I ever play clean chords with so little room? But then I thought back to my very first car driving experience 60 years ago. It was a stick shift, or manual, and I was convinced I would never be able to co-ordinate everything. Of course, within weeks it all became second nature...

To all of you who are starting guitar, here are some quick pointers that are commonly asked on this video. ~~~~~~~~~~ The guitar and Strings ~~~~~~~~~~ There is a noticeable difference in sound when it comes to the guitar you use. I use an Ovation CP 247 and I personally love the way it sounds, but my friends don't as it sounds a bit off to them. Another thing when it comes to an acoustic guitar is it's strings. The better the strings, the better the quality. Also there are guitars that are made specifically for steel strings, and specifically for nylon (It doesn't matter what type you have, both have different sounds.) So if you are starting guitar, you may find yourself starting with a cheap 30$ nylon string guitar. You don't want to spend big on your first guitar as you may end up not using it because you find it "to hard". ~~~~~~~~~~ Chords Help/ Finger position ~~~~~~~~~~ Now for the chord part. When it comes to chords, it can be a pain starting off. After a couple of chords your fingers start to hurt, if your new, from pressing down the strings. Don't worry, it happened to every guitar player. You will get calluses after a while of playing guitar and it will hurt less. Now you also may not reach some chords, which is fine. There are a couple things that you can do to help you get to those chords. The main one that I found that helped the most is to re-position your thumb. This can also change the sound of the chord depending where you have it, like if you have your thumb slightly over the top of the guitar when you're playing the Chord "c" it will mute the top string. Another option to improve the reach of your fingers onto the chords is to try new fingers (if possible) as you may find it a bit easier. One last thing i'll add is to try and stretch your fingers, find tutorials on youtube, as they will lead to you being able to play different chords easier like Bar Chords. ~~~~~~~~~~ How to become better at chords ~~~~~~~~~~ You may struggle swap from chord to chord fluently when you start, trust me its normal! To swap chord to chord just takes a small amount of practice, as in 10 minutes a night for about 1-2 weeks. Just set up a sheet of chords and run through them, but mix it up every night. This was a really quick run down on some basic points people have asked!!! If you have any questions just reply to my comment on this and i'll try and help you :)

This is great stuff Nate. I've just started learning at 75 and although I have good flexibility and strength in my fingers and no arthritis, I struggle using my fingertips. It hurts, and I'm told I need to build up callouses. Once callouses build up I'm expecting to not need as much pressure, making it easier to not muffle adjacent strings, which happens a lot. Plus I need MUCH more flexibility, G is impossible at the moment, I just can't get the pinky/high E fingering to work. Not even close. I can do E major and E minor reasonably well, but then they are quite easy... Having watched this video several times I applaud you for your patient and thorough teaching method, Nate. I expect to gain much from this and your other videos. I'm a left hander but told myself I was going to learn right handed from the off. Playing left handed didn't seem to make any sense whatsoever, so right handed it is. I should prepare myself for a long slog even getting through these basic chords. Well, so be it... This tutorial surprisingly really helped me compared to other guitar tutorials! I am still trying to remember 5 more chords (already memorized 3) and I actually didn't have much of a problem with my fingers not fitting between strings. The transitioning was also great practice! THANK YOU sir SO much!

+Deneb Ryan ive been doing it since i was 8, but its only now that ive moved to chords. my top tip: learn classical music/guitar pieces. if you start with chords then you can only really get to a point before it can get VERY HARD. learning classical gives you skill, and helps you progress hope this helped :)

Minor chords seem to be my favorites. Theh just add more of a spice, mellow, emotional sound to them. G and E seems to be good chords to end a verse or song on. Like Time of your life by Greenday

Do you see any disadvantage to learning E major, E minor, A major, and A minor using fingers 2, 3, and 4 from the very beginning, instead of 1, 2, and 3, in preparation for bar chords later?

I'm going to be doing this for a month straight (or until I finally know how to do it) as a complete beginner so here is my progress: Day 1: My fingers are crying but then again I didn't expect it to be easy. Today, I just strummed the 8 chords on my guitar to see if it sounded close to being right and it did. If somebody told me to recite all 8 chords from this video rn for 1 mil, I would still have $0 in my bank account. Day 2: I'm now committed to learning these 8 chords so I'm first starting off with G Major.

After watching this video, now you can play Knocking on Heaven's door by Guns N' Roses. Which is an easy song to play if you are new to guitar.

@MusoraMedia7 жыл бұрын
Try making a chord shape on the fretboard, then removing it, put it back on, take it off, etc. over and over, making sure you place all your fingers down at once and not one at a time. Do this with all the different chord shapes you know. Eventually the muscle memory will kick in, and when you start going from one chord to another it will be a lot easier. :)

Do some hand stretching exercises and buy a soft rubber ball. squeeze the ball, release, squeeze etc. It'll build up the strength in your fingers.

Hi Princess - It will definitely feel uncomfortable in the beginning, so don't worry about that. Unless you have little tiny baby hands, you should be fine :). It's all about positioning! I just realized that your comment is 3 years old, so maybe you've figured it out by now, lol.

This is a nice video- but why is it on all guitar videos hardly ever does anyone tell the student what notes they are playing to form the chord.. it’s all about shapes.. seems like it’s not really about teaching music just the instrument. In my opinion it would greatly help to learn the chords and the fret board by knowing what notes form the chord.. am I wrong?

what do the black and white dots on the top of the fret tablature mean?

I believe it indicates the root note of the chord being played. In E Major there were black dots above both E strings and there was one over the A String for A Major

Are you supposed to press really hard on the strings? Or lightly cause my fingers hurt😭
@joanneac767 жыл бұрын
hi, you need to press hard enough so that it sounds nice, It does hurt at first BUT the good news is that our bodies are aaaamazing and your fingers will start to harden up on the tips quickly and it won't hurt anymore. You must play every day, even if it's just for 10 mins so that they harden up. i have had my guitar for 1 week now, and I played for about 10-15 mins everyday, and my fingers were sore, but today i played for about 45 mins and although they hurt and are throbbing a bit now, i managed to play for a lot longer and i can feel the skin is hardening up nicely. So just suffer the pain for a short while and it will be sooooo worth it . All the best
