How Tywin Lannister Commands Respect in Game of Thrones
Tywin Lannister is a beast. He effectively served as king for many years under Aerys and wielded massive influence over Robert and Joffrey. He would have continued to be the power behind the thrones had he not been so horrible to Tyrion - more on that later - but that’s not the point.
In this video I want to explore why Tywin was able to command so much respect, breaking down everything from his body language to his strategy.

He's a stage actor, not a film star. There is a huge difference between the two. Charles Dance isn't a chameleon like Christian Bale or Jared Leto. He can, however, command power and presence with his stance and use of his voice. This is an example of stage acting at it's best. It's incredible, really. See Diana Rigg - who is also on Game of Thrones - do the same thing. They are so much better than Kit Harington.

Carlu Yabut You kiddin` me? I could watch this guy read phone book, and pay money to see it. There is only a handful of actors i think of that way: Anthony Hopkins, Crispin Freeman(voice of Alucard from "Hellsing"), Liam Neeson(granted many of his films are shitty, but he still is awesome), Mark Strong, Mads Mikkelsen, and Charles Dance of course. There are two guys from my own country but you didn`t even hear about them, so there is no point. Anyway- when i hear these guys talking, or see them acting, i`m feeling so freaking gay. I mean, i love women, but the minute i see Tywin bossing people around, or hear Alucard laughing mockingly, i get shivers down my spine :)

I don't think Kit Harington's character is supposed to have a strong presence. He's a bastard, insecure about his leadership, and worried about the white walkers. Tywin had already proved himself, John Snow is very young.

Fear is a powerful tool, but when you're dealing with someone who has no fear, the loss of such a great tool leave you with few options, back away, or go to war. Since animals aren't self-aware as we are, and have no deep notion of their actual physical power, the gorilla's response was entirely reasonable, it's only logical to back away if you're facing someone who's power you don't know, and who also does not fear you.

seemed to me that the guy was just stunned it's pretty common.. when people get shocked/surprised in fear, they'll freeze in place momentarily the reason i think this is being stunned and not self control, is because you can clearly see him move backward away from the gorilla while he's trying to figure out wtf is happening and what to do about it
@aluskn
@aluskn 6 жыл бұрын
@@vugarfataliyev6544 This would not work with all animals. This is due to motivation - Gorillas are not predators, they are herbivores. Fighting for them is a social activity, to determine dominance. If that does not work, the Gorilla will not usually kill a human, in the same way that they do not kill each other when fighting. A hunting polar bear, on the other hand, does not have any interest in dominance - it sees a human (or anything else it encounters) as a mobile bag of calories, and the 'assert dominance by not reacting' technique would not work. Of course Humans as a species are the 'planetary apex predator' but that does not always apply down to the individual scale - go up against a hunting polar bear in the Arctic Circle, or a large crocodile or alligator ambushing from the water's edge, and no strategy of posturing or 'asserting dominance' will cut it.

One thing that people rarely address when it comes to Tywin is that he also knew his place in the pecking order. When the Mad King decided to humiliate him in front of the whole court and even insulted his wife, Tywin took the king's slights like a champ and was strategically silent. He was never impulsive, never became emotional, he bid his time and waited for the right opportunity to end the Targaryen dynasty. Once again, you don't tell people anything, you show them. Words are wind. Tywin was brilliant!

Excellent video! One thing you missed though is how Tywin positions himself in the throne room. When he is named hand of the king he rides in on a horse, so the king doesn’t look down on him, their eye line is even. Later, when he lectures the king, he walks up the stairs so that he is looking down on him. This plays into how he positions himself in ways that convey power, like how he invades the personal space of Jamie and looks down on Tyrion.

I agree, killing Tywin created the dismay amongst the Lannister family. In fact I recall him breaking down the strengths and weaknesses to each of his children reminding them their not as smart as they think they are. I think Cerci will screw everything up for the Lannister. She does not have alliances on her own, only enemies. She has acted only on her emotion rather than strategy and tactics like like her father. However, if Cerci, Jammie, and Tyron did not have such dysfunctional relationships they could rule together with the collective insights of Tywin.

Tywin wanted to "make a man" outta Tyrion and punished him for marrying the commoner by making him witness a (pardon my choice of words) "gang bang". Tywin had no one but himself to blame for much of what Tyrion became afterwards. The thing is, all Tywin had to do was the bare minimum of being kind to Tyrion, regardless of his hatred. I think something important about the silence is control too. It shows that, while others are angry and emotional, and speaking in outbursts, he's controlled. He's calculating and he's powerful in this moment because he's in control of the conversation.

Don't forget to consider, the quiet types are always thinking, so when they need to act they may be reasonable, but if the circumstances don't fall into what they're expecting, they hesitate. Emotional may be often unreasonable but emotions don't make you hesitate, reason and logic does, or rather your idea of which logic and reason should be applied to a certain scenario

Silence also often makes other people very uncomfortable, so if you are comfortable with silence, using it to make other people nervous or twitchy is not that difficult. When someone says something to you, and you just stare at them without responding, they almost never know what to do, and will start babbling nervously just to fill the space.

It is not. Read the comment above the former one. First, it's a fictional character. Second, Tywin is easily the most powerful character on GoT. Everyone else is just an upstart, he's the guy pulling all the strings for years. He has the most information, the most money, the best alliances and the most powerful army. It takes the series a full 4 seasons to finally kill him, when he's easily the most hated dude everywhere. He could put on a clowns nose, do jumping jacks and still get to command everyone around. The only lesson to be learned from his character is, even if you are the most powerful man in the world, the smallest guy still could get you. Stop watching shit like this, especially when you're young. It'll twist reality and you'll have a rather bad wake up call when trying to apply all the shit you can see on this channel in real life. It just doesn't work like that.

Encrypted Ronin Not at all true for Dany, she isn't some stereotypical woman who gets thrown into power and is like "Oh no! What would a man do?" She does things the way SHE would. She's already watched her husband, and brother, fall out of their power because they acted dominant and arrogant and, most importantly, MANLY. She acts dominant, because she understands she's in power, just the same in scenarios where she is in danger or threatened you often see her shooken, or worried.
@erentheca
@erentheca 6 жыл бұрын
Agreed. Dany is constantly trying to pretend she asserts actual authority, but in reality can only appeal to lineage, threaten, and make demands. The characters around her are forced by the writers to pretend she wields some kind of special authority, but she really doesn't and it's painfully obvious. She's a wish-fulfillment character through and through.

In a male dominated world, any woman has first to make the men she's dealing with take her seriously. Daenerys didn't grow up in what could be called a normal situation - indeed her own brother treated her more as property than as a sister - so maybe she overcompensates at times.

I always found it interesting that when Joffrey makes Tywin hand of the Kind and gives him the badge, he enters on a horse. The throne is positioned so that his subjects look up at him. Whereas when Tywin enters on a horse he is pretty much level with Joffrey, showing symbolically that he is of equal power with the crown and not a subject.

- less words - comfortable with silence - doesn't care about words but action - downward inflections shows power; but not useful in most occasion if you want to be friendly - make others wait creates tension and nervousness; also power. (and time to ponder) - physicality: leaning forward, sort of looking down. Big posture, invading other's space. Touch the other if necessary - leave as soon as he closed his term. Speaking last conveys authority

I agree with the observations of the more subtle displays of power to manipulate situations, but there are some key points to add: Tywin commands fear because he actually can (and will) have you and your whole family killed, so all the weight of his actions are backed up by that terrifying knowledge. Tywin has control of the military and guard, not Joffrey, so Joffrey's rage is impotent when challenging Tywin. The intonations are a reflection of the power they do or don't have. Tywin is head of a rich and powerful household and has taken advantage of his position to live a lifetime of scheming to create the situation he's now in. Any average person acting like him, without the fear of violence to protect them, is likely to get punched in the face. He lives a friendless life unloved by his children and eventually he's killed because it's the only way to stop him.

Exactly... What these videos never tell you, is that, for you to pull off these 'displays of power' at everyday environments like the workplace, and not immediately get called out for it, you would also need to actually own the damn company.. Imagine being a simple shift lead at a department store and constantly 'boom' at your charges.. Yeah, that's a sure way to not last long in that job..

The communication techniques and body language are good points. But the inherent power vested in Tywin is what made him so powerful. He ruled the richest and most powerful military force in the 7 kingdoms at the time. Imagine the following two scenarios: A homeless man using the same techniques to intimidate and achieve the upper hand. It would laughable if not for the desperate situation that the person is in. The second scenario is a US army general commanding an expeditionary force that is marching into enemy territory. He has subordinates who are head strong and very stubborn. They are loyal but want to see the logic behind everything. These techniques will definitely help him achieve greater persuasive authority. Obviously its easy to just order people but you want people to not only follow orders but to take ownership of your orders such that they will give life and limb to achieve it. In order to use these techniques there must already be a power dynamic built in. Tywin was always a powerful individual but he used body language to his advantage.

A Lannister never pays his debts. If any of them did, they'd all have been long dead. A Lannister will have his revenge, though. You see, a debt YOU pay is what you owe to someone else, not what you think they owe to you. And Lannisters, by and large, reject the notion that they could ever owe other people anything. They do embrace the idea that they are entitled to everything they want, and that everyone who impedes their acquisition of their desires is committing a mortal crime. So, perhaps more accurately, a Lannister always collects his due.

You missed the part where he hovers over Joffrey while Joffrey is sitting on the throne... You touched on the subject with the scene where Joffrey asked about why he isn't apart of the council meetings... Tywinn offers for Joffrey to be carried by servants because he complains about the new location. Joffrey then gets a little louder trying to display his power. Tywinn then stays silent and approaches the throne and hovers over Joffrey giving him a solution he knows Joffrey has no choice but to take... That scene says everything about who really ran the kingdom.

Possibly the most powerful aspect of conversation is silence. The second most powerful aspect of conversation is your selection of words. The third is your tone. I’ve heard men with high pitched voices, who would otherwise sound weak, control conversations better than Stalin controlled his most trusted advisors. Being tall and having a deep voice have little to nothing to do with conversation. Your competence, intelligence, and confidence have more to do with conversation than how you look. If you remain silent for long enough and simply observe others, no one will take you for a fool until you open your mouth. However, if you’re smart enough, you’ll let others reveal their intentions before you utter a word…

The best thing about Tywin, that he kept Cirsy in line like the rest of them, but he couldn't do the same for Jaime for how much he loves his son and that shows greatness in his fatherly love and wisdom. As for what he does to keep in power, ethically speaking, it's too much, but if it weren't for his crazy grandson or crazier daughter, he would have kept ruling calmly.
