I am one of those people who believe that age shouldn't influence makeup. Each to their own, if you have the confidence at 50 flaunt it girl. However as I got older I realised my taste has become more refined and understated. Now I simply concentrate on my skin to make it look flawless while keeping my eyes and lips very natural and nude. I only use concealer with peptides and powder foundation with retinol. I have extremely oily skin and depending on the weather I can give my powder foundation a glowy look or a matte look. Thank you for the tips. They are very useful ❤️

At 48, with dry, gradually sagging skin, I have definitely changed my makeup look. Less is more, prepping the skin first is a must, including SPF, and I prefer tinted moisturizer over an actual foundation, unless it is a foundation balm like the L’Oréal one. Recently, I also rarely cover my whole face, I have seen these videos on Instagram and Tik Tok, that look like stripes or dots all around the face. Middle of the forehead, down the nose, on the chin and just above the jawline is a light concealer, then on the corners of the forehead, sides of the nose and down half each jawline is a cream contour and a cream blush high up on the cheekbones, then a quick spritz with a mist or spray all over the face and then blend the products into the skin going from lightest to darkest. It’s quick and easy and provides a more natural look, seamless look than 3 different over, aping layers do. My eye makeup is also a lot softer and I don’t use powder shimmer anymore because it emphasizes my eyelid texture, but I can get away with a lightweight, cream eyeshadow with some sheen to it and then a matte shadow in the crease to pull it all together. We gotta work with what we are given, am I right? 😉

Mixing foundation with moisturizer is a great idea, but my favorite tip here is putting serum on under concealer. My under eye area is where I see aging occurring most and I think that will help overcome it, including the fact that serums are good for anti-aging anyway. Thank you so much, Lisa, for all your evolving ideas and products. I try to duplicate them as much as possible. 💖💖

At 60, I completely agree on the black liner around the eyes! I see friends still doing this and it's so harsh! I have so much drooping of my eyelids now that I don't even line the top; I tightline with bronze or brown only. Less really is more as we age 🥰

I’m just a year younger than you, but totally agree that makeup techniques had to be adjusted as I get older too. Used to love matte full coverage only foundations (liked glowy too but had to be decent coverage for me), now gravitating more towards more glowy, medium-high medium coverage bases. I even like tinted moisturizers now, as long as they fade gracefully. But I still love my black liquid liner, hard to go thin with it for me.😅 when I 1st started makeup back at age 17, I used only brown black pencil liner for a long time, then the black pencil liner from Mac for several years. But now once in a while will wear a brown pencil liner smudged out if I’m short on time/too lazy to do dedicated black liquid liner. Love your recs!!

Sometimes we have to work with our face shape too. Like I looked at your eye look and love it, but I have hooded eyes, so I can't really achieve that. And I know you mentioned about keeping the eyeliner really thin - which makes complete sense and I could really go without with my hooded eyes, but I'm so fair, I need the color and dimension lol. Oh make-up - an adventurous learning experience.

Since I am older the big change is in my eye makeup & blush. I have large eyes and they are starting to droop so the application of eyeshadow is a little different. I also find that now that my hair is completely white blush is very important. Not only the color but the placement. I still use bronzer but only on my hollows and lightly around the bottom of my face. I never went for all that baking under the eyes because it just didn’t work, but I do always set my concealer. Great tips! Thanks 😊

Turned 38 this year and about 4 months ago changed my skin care routine and have loved what it is doing for my skin my skin is no long as dry and at the surface and is much less red and in even in tone, but that said because my skin has changed my makeup application and prep has changed too, my skin used to be dry and dehydrated, and i have mild rosacea… all of which has improved but I still have to be mindful if dehydrated skin and rosacea reactivity…. For my dehydrated textured skin I started using a hydrating smoothing primer … my favorite is the milk hydro grip… I used to go nowhere near powder, now i find that my skin is more combo so I do use light powdering in the t zone…. I have found that prefer baked pressed powder very lightly applied with an almost dry sponge because I have found that gives me the lightest, smoothest, most seamless and most set finish to the powder application. Also, due to expression lines around the eyes as my face moves I do not use concealer outside of the inner part of my eyes. However, due to darkness in that area I do use a corrector and a full coverage thin constancy concealer there after I prep with a moisturizer and hydrating smoothing primer

I stopped using bright colors on my eyes in my 40’s. Instead of looking like I was having fun with my makeup, it looked like I didn’t know what I was doing. Now, I can add a touch of color but a colorful eye just looks silly. I started using a soft, shimmery eyeliner for my lower lash line at about the same time. I made a mistake one day and put a light (not white) shimmer liner on my waterline. It looked great and became a standard practice.

So great to read all the comments from older women here! I'm sixty, with super oily skin with lots of tiny red veins, so lately I've been sampling full coverage foundations at Sephora. I used to only wear SPF and powder because every foundation slid off my skin. I haven't yet found the perfect combination of primer and foundation. One thing that I think looks terrible on older women is really dark lipstick or brown toned lipstick. It just drags down the face. Thankfully, the full matte lip look is out. I recently have been enjoying adding those sheer shimmer shadows you mentioned because I used to use only matte shadows. But as you said, the formulations have changed so much in the last twenty years. Brows are the hardest to manage now. Trying to cover greys when you have dark brows is a challenge. Thanks Lisa!

Great tips, Lisa! I'm 59. I, too, am using a more light to medium coverage foundation that looks more natural. I have eliminated sparkly facial highlighter and blush. I prefer something that looks like it gleams without the sparkle. Another technique I've dropped is lining the lower lashline at all, unless I'm going for a more sultry look. I have dark, undereye circles with fair, reflective skin. I find that the lower liner undoes all of the good of my brightening concealer and also makes me look more tired.

I loved the positive and realistic tone you set with this video and thought your advice was so well-reasoned. Nothing looks more “aging” than when someone-as the years go by-clings to their old products/techniques rather than making the adjustments that will enhance their changing appearance. That doesn’t mean someone has to give up the things they love, but they probably need a bit of adjustment to suit things like the inevitable changes in texture, skin tone, skin laxity, the size/shape of features , etc. A friend of mine (who is a retired makeup artist) once told me he could usually tell how old women were just by looking at the way they had applied their makeup when they’d come to see him. They had gotten older, but their makeup routine was the same old same old. They obviously realized that something was off about their look, but they didn’t know how or what to adjust. Helping women of all ages was his “mission”, but he actually preferred working on older women (50+) because they had so much untapped beauty. He said beautiful younger women were a dime a dozen, but a stunning older woman was like a fine diamond. She could take your breath away.

Hi sweet Lisa. At 63, my make-up techniques have definitely changed. Gone are the days of heavy foundation. You are so right. Skincare is the most important step followed by daily sunscreen. Great suggestion for applying undereye concealer. I'm loving Angie's concealer brush. The little bumps under your eyes are called milia. Your esthetician can easily remedy them. I avoid black eyeliner and stick with brown. I'm so glad that the baking trend is over. I never did it. You look younger now than when I 1st started watching you more than 5 years ago! I love the DIOR quint pallets. I have the pallet called Organza. So flattering on mature lids. I use far less powder than I used to by far. Lighter on the brows too. I tried but Never liked black eyeliner. I am fair neutral skin and blue-green eyes. Black liner is harsh and just shouts "black liner" on me. In fact I didn't start wearing liner until my late 40s because it made my lashes look fake. I am blessed with long curled lashes but you can only see them when I wear mascara. But ai also was influenced by the Cheryl Tiegs era of minimal makeup. I will be 64 this month and just tight line the upper lid with medium shades of gray, brown, blue, green or plum for a bit of definition.

At 55, and completely in menopause, my skin has definitely changed and my makeup look has also. Less is more, I use cream bronzers and blush, and use dark liner sparingly, prepping the skin first is a must, if you're not already, incorporate a great skin care routine, (including every day use of SPF, Vitamin C in the am, Retinol or Retin A in the PM), I prefer tinted moisturizer vs. foundation, and I use powder strategically. I didn't throw out my foundations, but I dilute it with SPF (after I've already applied my final layer of SPF). It's a funny dynamic, I still feel and think like a 30 y.o., but the second I add too much makeup, it is very aging and not flattering. I'd add, proper hydration (inside and out) and good nutrition, every day (I follow the 90/10 rule, eat healthy 90% of the time and you can splurge occasionally), and watching sugar goes a long way to feeling and looking better.

I'm just getting on the cream products train with blushes! I love them in the summer when it's so hot I'm not wearing foundation.

I do use less powder but I still powder my whole face. I still have very oily skin all over. Im curious about not powdering the cheek area, but I get very oily there as well. Ill try it!

While I'd like to use less heavy coverage foundation, at 48 I'm still almost as oily as I was during my teens & 20s. What would be your suggestion for "lightening" the coverage while maintaining the oil control that several fuller coverage foundations provide? I do use a couple of different primers (depending on what I'm doing or how my skin is behaving), but sheer foundation does pretty much nothing for me, as would not powdering 80% of my face.

Hey VAwitch, have you checked on Nikkias account? She is an "oily girl" and keeps on testing different foundation. Maybe this is where you could find some tips!

Definitely have much dryer skin than I did up until even five years ago. I only use cream blush as well and also dilute the foundation with moisturizer to get a more natural look. I actually don't use powder except a few times a year because my skin is so dry.

I always had decent skin, thick lashes and the only makeup I wore was a red lip and mascara. Now I find I feel better with a light foundation, fiber brow gel, and blush/bronzer. I have to say, I miss my mat dark red or berry lipstick, but it doesn't look good anymore. Than goodness for improvement in lip glosses!

Three things I do now that I didn't do before I started watching YT are : 1 ■ Bronzing - I didn't even know it was a thing - 2 ■ Using specific makeup brushes (or makeup brushes period!). I did practically everything with my fingers - I don't think I could do it now tho 😂 3 ■ Concealing and colour correcting. These were by far the most amazing things for me, they made such an immediate impact. Isn't makeup fantastic 😊 Love you lots 🧚‍♀️💜🧚‍♀️💜🧚‍♀️💜🧚‍♀️ Thankfully, I never got into the "block eyebrows" as I just didn't like how they looked and undereye baking. I tried to "bake" a couple of times and I looked terrible - I thought there was something wrong with me because everyone on YT was doing it and looked great.

Thank you for these tips, all are very helpful and I find that I am doing many already. For me less is more, I try to be mindful of how much foundation and powder I use. And for eyeliner I am using a thin brush and darker color shadows instead of eyeliner pencils. I find it actually looks better. I guess better to learn late then never.

Im 53 and i still wear what I did but little change. it is more glowy and not matte skin. I like a bronze glow look. I love cream products and use them daily. I still like highlighter on cheek bones and shimmers on the eyes but not any thick or chunky glitters. Foundation i still need full coverage to cover dark spots n pigment, but i add a glow to the skin and cant do heavy foundation just one i can build up with a sheen is nice. I like glowy skin then matte powdered skin. Still use the Hourglass ambient powder to give the soft focus not looking too dry. Brows i do softer too and lips less matte n more glossy and rarely use a deep lip unless a warm red once in a while.

I love your tutorials/videos. Your makeup is so flawless yet natural looking. What liner pencil/stick do you recommend for the bottom lash line? I am trying yo get away from black and love the look of just using the eyeshadow stick. Have a blessed day. I am also in Texas and am so over this heat!

What I can do, if I have dry skin but every now and then I have oil in my T zone? I have noticed that the less full coverage , better I look. But I don’t feel comfortable because I have rosacea and some texture. I want more cover because of that , but it looks bad… look older. I’m 41

Love your videos, Lisa J! I grew up also being a MAC girl and used to pack on the makeup with heavy foundation and eyes. I'm around your age so I resonated with everything you said about how you used to do your makeup back in the day. Question: What brushes are you using for your bronzer and blush? Not sure if it's the same brush or 2 different ones, but I would love to get them as I still have my old MAC brushes. Also, what eyeliner are you using for your water line? Thanks!

I’m finding as I get older.. that I prefer to have simpler and lighter looking makeup. For example.. for eyeshadows I prefer to have a wash of color look than having it look so made up-less is more. I find it more youthful looking not to mention it takes less time to apply
