I'm wondering if frogs will have bug preferences, like rare frogs only eating expensive/hard to find bugs. Again with the rare frogs, I think unique interactions with rarer frog varieties would be pretty cool.

For sure! I think the special frogs (rarer than rare frogs) will definitely have unique interactions/bug tastes, will just have to see if there's enough unique bugs/interactions I can add for some rare frogs :)

A little suggestion: you could make see philosophical quotes pop up in frog thoughts with a little chance. Pressing on a frog and knowing it's thinking smth along the lines of "was everything produced by reason it's own excuse for being?" would be kinda funny if it happens very rarely

Yea!! That was my original plan, but I realized that I would basically need to draw double the amount of frog poses, since the positioning of the eyes/mouth for a smiling frog is different. I'd still love to implement this, so hopefully there's an easier way that requires less work :)

​@@realdevfrog I would recommend making the face a separate overlay, instead of switching the entire body. Basically a second sprite, parented to the original frog body, that moves with them. The face itself can be then repositioned to match your frog's body pose. A simple controller for expression then swaps this sprite to the frog's current mood. At this point, "sleepy pose" just gets it's own sleeping expression override. You can even make this sprite pure white, and tint it with the frog's outline color; this way you can just have one set of frog expressions for most of the frogs (and just make a different set of expressions for the frogs that are unique, such as the gloomy frog. )

I absolutely adore that frog reward "ticket" screen! It's 10/10 in animation and is just overall very pleasing to look at. I think it's my favorite screen lmao. I can't wait to play the game and it's been really fun hanging out in the discord channel.

hiii great video, i love where this game is going! idea: to make the frogs have more personality, you could maybe make them have ''dislike items or actions'' example one of the frog can hate the spam squish , after a certain amount of clicks on the frog they can have like lil angry eyebrows appearing on their face and decreasing their happiness (maybe broken hearts on top of them instead of the normal hearts from when theyre happy) or also exemple; they all have a bug or meal that they dont like but we kinda have to discover it (same animation and happiness decrease when you give them food/bugs they dont like) and they can even have a favorite too! i think this will make the type of frogs have more personality

Rather than having the toy disappear when placed while red, having the item make a buzz sound and flash red again, while staying up, while re-instate to the player that the item can't be placed and to move on to placing it elsewhere. I also wont need to then go into my inventory to find the same item again. Feels less "punished" for accidentally clicking where I dont mean to as well.

Loving this game so far! I've got a small suggestion, make the frog gift slips in the gifts menu swing according to how much you scroll too, it would give it a bit more atmosphere I feel.

this game is shaping up to be so god damn adorable! cant wait to try it out once its released! Not sure if its something thats already a thing but maybe with the feeding frogs system every frog species could have their own food preferences and there could be a a note on which foods a certain frog likes in the compendium. That might add a little bit of a unique personality to each of the adorable frog types!

Thank you so much! I think I forgot to mention in the video, but yes, each frog has their own food preferences :) Players are free to feed whatever they wish to the frog, but feeding something a frog likes will greatly increase their happiness

Just a suggestion, but maybe you could add a way to completely customize the forest, like have purely asthetic things you can buy, like pathing, potted plants or outdoor lighting, etc. If it's not purely asthetic the way you decorate the forest might add a bit to the frogs happiness. Also, I feel like the mini games with the frogs could benefit from being zoomed in a bit more, theyre so small and i want to see them in all their glory! So excited to play this game!

Thanks for the suggestion! I plan on making the forest completely customizable, as in players can cut down trees, break rocks, collect foliage, etc, as well as plant them back and place other nature/scenic decorations and objects. And yes, toys and interactions won't be the only ways to increase a frog's happiness: Other factors such as weather, time, if other frogs are nearby, and decorations will all increase or decrease a frog's happiness :)

I think it would be cool to have unique minigame interactions for higher rarity frogs. It could be a cool bonus incentive for players to collect the rare ones to find out which minigames they'll have. And of course, great additions as always! This is so cool ive watched since the first dev vlog... you should add personalities to the frogs like maybe the lava frog gets mad easily and has an animation where he lets off steam or a skiddish frog that randomly hides orr a giggly frog that randomly ribbit giggles! just t to add some personality to each frog type !!

I agree :) Unfortunately this would take an unfathomable amount of time to accomplish if I decide to make a unique pose for each frog, since there will probably be around 80+ frogs in the final game. However, each frog will have different poses for each unique toy that its on!

I could definitely add the option for cosmetics such as hats and other accessories! However at the moment, I was planning on designing themed frogs that already come with cosmetics (i.e. cowboy frog). I'll have to make a poll sometime in the future to ask what people think :)

Not changing him completely, but maybe his cloud would rain less, or maybe his expression changes into a tired smile once in a while? That's exactly what I had in mind as well! Like you mentioned, since poor gloomy frog is so gloomy all the time, as you increase his friendship, gloomy frog will get less and less gloomy, and maybe eventually turn into "happy" or "sunny" frog!

Now that ive watched it all through, my froggy friend HERES THE FEEDBACK 1 Very interesting gameplay mechanics for frogs and i love how it turned out. But some extra things to make it maybe more interesting is an engagement or happiness meter for frogs, while frogs will always be happy maybe making them happier could have a perk. Like maybe giving extra gifts. 2 Cosmetics ✨. Cosmetics would be like costumes and hats to make frogs look cuter. I'll definitely be adding a happiness meter, and incorporating happiness as an important factor for frogs :) Not only will interactions increase happiness, but indirect things as well such as weather, toy placement, time of day, etc! 2. Happy to see another devlog! Interaction ideas: could I eat something with a frog, or play a small game with a frog? It'd be nice if I could learn something about a frog's preferences or personality through talking with them...like a favorite color or interest or even just a special way they like to croak (like animal crossing villagers' catchphrases). It would be nice to talk with multiple frogs, like weigh in on a disagreement or debate. Or just listen and see if a frog becomes sleepy or sad. User-experience question: Would you consider playing a sound-alert on invalid position and allowing users to right-click (or some other input) to have the object disappear (into their inventory) instead?? I thought users might not want to have a toy disappear when attempting to place it in an invalid position---users might not understand, or be frustrated trying to precisely place objects.

When I saw a frog eat some food, it ate the bowl with it. I imagine the bowl being made of the shell of a coconut, a cantaloupe, or a watermelon. This is a great video!

Okay, okay, hear me out: Bodypainting with frogs Basically I'm just imagining an overlay where you can choose out of a few colors and drag them over the frogs body. (Making the paint a seperate sprite to massively reduce the work you would have to put into it!) The paint then stays on the frog a bit and then fades away. Petting a frog could make it fade away faster (or the gloomy frogs cloud "washing" it off faster) Scrubbing a frog can make the paint dissappear instantly. Frogs could have favourite colours too that way :D (Yes, I do realise it's probably endless amounts of work, but I'm just giving inspiration :) Also, I am so happy to hear the game's gonna be free :D

Small suggestion: in invalid placement of toys, just give a feedback animation of the click and don't do anything. It would be annoying to try and align a toy, only to misclick, now having to open the menu and start over.

I do plan on adding a friendship system for each frog! When players max out friendship with a frog, they'll get a unique souvenir just like in Neko Atsume, as well as some other rewards :)

I will say, for the bath one the water texture is a little out of place. If you wanted, you could draw small water droplets in the same style, I think it would make it a little more cohesive. And since the frogs are like Neko Atsume, does that mean that there will be a backlog of frogs when the game isn't running, or will they just not show up, or perhaps theres a limited amount that can show up when the game isn't running? All in all, very excited to play this when it releases! its nice to see you care not only about the game but also your players/audience as well :)

I'm glad you enjoyed :) You're totally right about the water droplets, I think they're just a single colored pixel, and I'll update the textures to fit the frog island art style in the future :D I haven't finalized my decision yet, but I'll have to choose between a real-time frog system, or one where frogs will only spawn when the game is open. This is because the game will need to be playable and enjoyable on both pc and mobile, so I'm not sure which one would be a better fit

I'll definitely be changing up the environments for all the areas, the trees n stuff you see are just placeholders to make the area look nice while I develop the game :) And yes, I have plans to add a frog king to the game!

I love how the frogs look on the toys, but I've been thinking, wouldn't they look better to be walking around?, if they stay sitting all the time they would look kinda dead, maybe having then walk around at different times based on their types would be best to make the player want to go back to find his frogs, maybe a 3 frame animation would do, like finding villagers on animal crossing, so they only stay on their toys at night or based in their " schedules ", (not very complicated schedules mind you, maybe just a active and sleeping time for all of them).

I like the idea of frogs walking around or idling when they aren't on their "schedules", and on toys when they are! Although I would have to animate frogs walking, and figure out a way for frogs to cohesively go from walking to using a toy, which I'm not sure how to do at the moment. But yes, this could definitely make the game a lot more interesting :)

@@realdevfrog maybe just set boundaries on the borders of the island, setting a 2-4 frame animation would work if you give it the stretch property to look smoother than making lotsa frames, no clue how to make toys work but maybe just set them to stand nearby them and just appear onto them, but that's just an idea, love the progress on these past devlogs, lots of love

3:48 is this the most user friendly decision though? if the player tried to place something in a tight spot between two objects and fails at the first attempt, they then have to move their mouse back to the inventory icon, click, back to the item icon, click, and then align it on the spot where they wanted to place it again. this is a lot more effort. what you could do instead is let the item wiggle or zoom in and out to show "nope i cant go here" but leave it on the cursor in case the player needs a second attempt to place it. and if they no longer want to try placing it, they could cancel the placement by right-clickng to bring it back to the inventory.

i think frogs shouldn't be able to have interactions when sleeping, or maybe it can have some special interactions for that. an maybe it will be cool if the gift is left in the toy when the frog leaves.

I know this is a bit elaborate, but it could be cool if frogs could play with each other (ex. hit a ball back and forth). I also think it would be cool if you could name your frogs like in pokémon. The game is looking really great, and i can’t wait for march 20th!

That's a great idea! I think for some toys where 2+ frogs can use the toy, I could have certain animations where frogs are playing with each other :) And yea, I'll either give frogs some unique names, or let players custom name the frogs themselves

Oops I forgot to clarify in the video, but players can only buy 1 of each toy! The reason there are multiple is just for testing purposes, so in the final game, it'll be lots of different ones :)
