Detour Woodworking is a hobby I enjoy and I do things in a rather serendipitous manner. I just do what I feel like doing when I want to do it.

Wood art that is functional. Great work! I don't have any tool in my shop as accurate as yours, and I'm shaky. Normally I'm A to Z. I aim for perfect and then hope for poor eyesight.

A-Z for me. I enjoy working through my builds in the order planned. Sometimes order of operations is really important (like you adding finish to the insides of the cubbies before attaching them)!

A-Z if I have a plan. However without a plan, which is usually the case, I tend to ad lib and detour, back up, or change directions completely. Nice folding desk. The inlay is beautiful. I hope the strut screws continue to hold up to the weight of people leaning on the desk top.

Thanks! 👍 I’m hoping they’ll hold on. I have a few less than ideal ideas how to reinforce it if they don’t.

Detour or A-Z...well, I'm more of a YYZ guy as a Rush fan. It was a wonderful build, and refreshing to see a realistic take on how things go in the shop. Too many perfect woodworkers on KZbin these days. While we are on that subject, be a little easier on yourself. It is a hard lesson, and one I am just learning myself. Your original inlay looked good. If you don't point out such small errors, nobody else will notice. Before long, you won't remember them either. Then next time you try to do one, you'll improve rather than going for perfection from your first try. I've done a lot of segmentation and intarsia on scroll saws. Same basic skillset. Perfection just isn't realistic by hand.

A-Z. Those gas pistons and small screws are not weight bearing. This is a really great example of what not to do for a flip down desk.

Squirrel! I mean detour! Seems I get halfway through a project, think of something else I want to build (or see a video on KZbin and have to build it) and work on that, and then come back to the original project.

At 1:14. Don't do that. It's fine to use your fence as a stop block, but before you cut have a firm grip on your workpiece you should push your fence away to remove any resistance.
@windfirewoodwork
@windfirewoodwork 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for your concern. With the thin mitred edge against the fence and the mitre gauge on the right side of the blade, everything went very smoothly. But yes, there are situations where this would be a bad decision!

Blue tape works just as good or better than those band clamps, I've used those band clamps in the past, never cared for them. Blue painters tape is actually very strong and holds so well, give it a try. Blue not green lol.
@windfirewoodwork
@windfirewoodwork 5 ай бұрын
Why blue over green? I find the green tape to be cheaper and to stretch more.
@Monkey_Snot
@Monkey_Snot 5 ай бұрын
@@windfirewoodwork blue grips a bit better, the colors are to indicate stick strength (when painting) so blue will stick better with less stretch, green has more stretch but less stick, I'm not saying don't use green, but blue works better as a clamp imo.

If you want to use your fence as a stop, you should have a block of wood attached to it, so the wood clears the fence during the cut. That is a dangerous procedure using the fence alone as a stop and is incorrect. I would point out that you have a _miter saw_ and can use it to cut...miters or 45*s A-Z, Batch, Detour, Same Setup. It depends.
@windfirewoodwork
@windfirewoodwork 5 ай бұрын
I hear you. I don't actually consider the fence all that dangerous as a stop in this case. The mitered edge is vary slim and the mitre gauge is on the same side of the blade. There isn't any offcut to get caught up here. When my mitre gauge is on the left side of the blade, I agree that there should be a block of wood on the fence. As for the mitre saw, I could...but I like my table saw better for these cuts. Thanks for watching! 👍
