Lada VFTS had special doors and hood/trunk lid that were made of aluminum. This helped to keep weight just above 900 kg. Soviet Union had also few extremely modified Group B prototypes(Lada Samara EVA, AZLK 2141KR, ZAZ-1102 Tavria ERF-Mobile), but the development was cancelled because of the FIA Group B ban.
@林振华-t4v7 жыл бұрын
v6ileib It is strange why they would consider putting a such weak engine for Group B competition. Group B machine during early 80s have engine power swells up to over 500ps. Since I recall it is almost anything goes in group B, why the Soviet manufacturer don't come up with a purpose modified engine to compete... you can reduce weight as much as possible. But it is going to be tough luck to pit a 100ps car against a 500+ps one...
@v6ileib7 жыл бұрын
Within the Group B there were separate classes with different engine displacement limits. BTW Lada samara had 1.9L 16v turbo engine with 300hp, so they started to catch up eventually.

Visio, thanks for all your high quality videos. p.s. the USSR never prioritized the production of private vehicles as they had one of the world's greatest railway systems. They also had hard times and limited funds after WWII, as Hitler destroyed about 1/3 of the nation, especially the modern industrialized sectors. So trying to build different cars every year with minor differences (larger tail fins, different grill, etc.) was a concept they never embraced for good reason. Planned obsolescence has always been silly and wasteful. The Moscow Metro is also truly awesome. I was fortunate to take the Trans-Siberian from Moscow thru Mongolia to China. Cost the wife and I four bucks apiece for the 7 day trip, as the ruble had lost almost all of its value. Even tho this was 1991 and the country had already broken into 1,000 pieces, the people were super friendly, and the rail systems were still excellent and efficient. The Moscow Metro had a big digital clock at every platform, always counting down from 2 minutes. And every two minutes or less, another classy and classic car/cars pulled into the station. 3 rides for a nickel. No cheap plastic, no graffiti, and smooth powerful acceleration from the electric engines. Most of Russia's rail was electrically powered, including the Trans-Sib. Russia is a Vast Nation, so trains just made sense. Ask anyone who's lived in Europe about trains. A good rail system is wonderful and comfortable to boot.

One thing that always surprises me about Eastern European two-stroke sports cars like the Melkus and Syrena Sport is that they are not equipped with proper expansion chambers even though these were invented in East Germany by MZ. Skoda 130s were briefly sold in Canada where they quickly gained a reputation for being even less reliable than Ladas. I'm sure they were great when used in their native land, but they just couldn't cope with Canadian conditions.

Fantastic video with one miss. FSO Syrena was beautiful, but it was only a prototype. The only one was produced, and destroyed becouse of propaganda. It wasn't a car for people, only for rich westerns. But, like somebody written here, we had a famous sports car, Stratopolonez, aka FSO Polonez 2500 Racing. In 1977 A. Jaroszewicz, a son of a prime minister crahed his Lancia Stratos on "Rally of Poland". He gave his wrecked car to a engineers, who put engine to a rally Polonez. With extra modifications, like truck radiator, they build a fastest Polish sports car. Officialy, this car beated a Audi Quattro. Yes. THIS B group Audi Quattro. It was becouse of transmission failture but who cares :p

The Gaz GL1 is like a commentary on communism - total inability to see anything outside of one perspective. It actually looks fairly good at first glance, but the design is dangerously flawed. Imagine driving in traffic with no side or back windows. Now imagine doing it at race speeds. Probably designed by an "expert" without consulting drivers.
@林振华-t4v7 жыл бұрын
Terrace Thornhill The GL1 is more like a track only car. Lot of contemporary LMP car have side window is more or less reg compliance. Your visibility is just a bit more than nothing from these side window.
@terracethornhill7 жыл бұрын
Have you ever driven a car? Being able to see what's going on around you is important, and even more important when you are on a track, running the ragged edge with a bunch of other cars, and ESPECIALLY open wheel cars where even incidental contact can be catastrophic.
@林振华-t4v7 жыл бұрын
Terrace Thornhill I have 3 cars, and have driven lot of others. When you are on the track, all you need to look is your front and your dash. If you really believe looking side and rear is as importance as road driving. You are greatly mistaken, especially when you're in competitive environment. Looking around is the luxury you don't have when you are in the middle of competition. The face is, competition application rear view mirrors have less FOV compare to its road going counterpart.
