No Roland. We wonder why people put old aero engines into cars! Then many of us wonder how we can get one and do the same... As for wondering why Americans put unnecessarily large engines in their cars, we don't do that. What we DO do is look at the capacity and then the power output and laugh our tits off when compared to what OUR engines produce half the size of yours!

It's funny how at some point in the history someone said: "Let's attach a big-ass engine to a bathtub" and it was one of the best ideas ever.

Okay so it's not the T80, but at 7:59 at the bottom of the screen there is some kind of streamlined speed record car with some kind of giant forced induction aero engine running on a science fiction formula of synthetic liquids, generating thousands of horsepower and capable of running at hundreds of miles per hour. And at the top of the screen, there is a cart being pulled by a horse. The '30s must have been incredibly weird.

Funny huh... The T80 could do over 400 mph using a Messerschmitt Bf 109 engine... That's probably very close to the top speeds a late Bf 109 could do.
@argh1989
@argh1989 7 жыл бұрын
The Bf 109 used DB 601 and later DB 605 engines, they weren't as big or powerful as the 603. 400 mph is about right for a late 109, but that's at something like 20,000 ft altitude, where the air drag is of course much lower. I doubt they reached more than 320 mph at sea level.

the T80 never run due to WWII. Ironically Hitler wanted to show up who is the best mechanic/engineer, by creating this vehicle with the intention to run in the area of 700km/h. Hitler suicided, but this masterpiece of 0,18 Cd survived.
@andyharman3022
@andyharman3022 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was going to say something about that. The sound going along with the footage of the T80 definitely didn't sound like a 2000 rpm aircraft engine. It sounded more like a Mercedes Grand Prix auto racing engine from the same era. The speed record cars were basically their racing cars with more aerodynamic bodies. But they did run on exotic mixtures of nitrobenzene and alcohol.

The Napier lion was referred to as a “broad arrow” engine, not a W12 even though other later engines of similar configuration were often called W12’s. Just for your information, I happen to know the guy who built the Napier Bentley and I believe has now sold it on. Keep up the good work mate! Yes, it was still just called Gran Prix then. Yes, the "mighty" Brits held most land speed records then. Yes, that engine normally used in a Messerschmitt was build by Daimler-Benz. Yes, that car isn't the T80. The video poster already left a comment correcting that. It doesn't change the fact that racing was very popular in pre-war Nazi Germany and that Mercedes and Auto-Union basically had government backing. You're quite the multi-tasker. The Darracq is water cooled as well. The V on the front is the radiator, and the brass torpedo atop the engine is the coolant header tank. As I recall he said the engine came from a Hawker Hurricane, which was another of many many aircraft that utilized the Merllin. He said he got hold of 2 engines and using the best pieces from both built the engine that's in the car. I can't remember the timescale but it was in the order of 10 years or longer in the making.

Better forward visibility (in single-engined aircraft) and they were easier to access for service.

The 1905 Darraq is supposed to be the first V8, but it was not a production line engine. The frame is pretty minimal & you can see the torque reaction twist the thing when the driver opens the throttle. Brutus is an absolute beast and so is the Handlye Special. The British Bulldog vs the evil Hun. I would love to drive that Fiat S76 through central London dressed like Biggles & let the blast from the exhaust ports break shop windows. The driver of Brutus cooks frankfurters with the exhaust flames. With the Fiat one could roast an entire lamb.
