I had a fiat Uno turbo, the predecessor of the Punto. It was even lighter and had the same 1.4l engine. It was a blast to drive. Few remain today.

I remember hooning around in my friends Uno Turbo. But on a straight strip between Quintral Downs coming into St Columb Minor, we tried to overtake a normal Uno ... doing around 65-70 mph, but the Turbo had no midrange power, and we couldn't do it .... shocking. The car blew up the next day! www.google.com/maps/dir/Quintrell+Downs,+Newquay+TR8+4WE/St+Columb+Minor,+Newquay+TR7+3HT/@50.4096388,-5.0454696,15z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x486b120880c53103:0x25bf6c60c3a78f6c!2m2!1d-5.029306!2d50.401493!1m5!1m1!1s0x486b0e10313cf043:0x17164103b28e8b17!2m2!1d-5.045908!2d50.417808!3e0

Totally agree though the title was "European Hot Hatches". I like to proceed: Escort XR3i and RS2000, Astra GSI, R19 16v, 106 GTI, ZX volcane and 16v, Lupo GTI - And even it's just a few year out of production: Twinge RS - which is to me one of the last old school affordable hot hatches.

Great vid as usual; thank you :-) I'll nominate a pair of Peugeot 306s: the GTI-6, and the Dturbo. Arguably the Dturbo was the car that proved diesel hot-hatches were viable - the 1.9 litre XUD turbo unit was superb and the 306 chassis had a very rare blend of excellent dynamics and comfortable ride. Also maybe the Focus ST170; and the Ford Racing Puma despite its very harsh ride.

Literally anything French that isn't a 205 GTi or a modern Renault Sport is very underrated. Any sporty Peugeot has an amazing chassis (don't even need a sporty one tbh, 206 owners know how fun they are, same goes for 106s and even bigger and less sporty cars like the 607 and 407s have very good handling) Same goes for Renault Sport, the Mk2 Clio RS is now one of the best and also cheapest hot hatches you can find.

That the "french bmw" chassis wise. Had a couple Peugeot myself, sporty and non-sporty, and they were all great. Precise front end and oversteery at the limits make them a hell of a weapon on b-roads.

The Rotorboi Remember the AMC Renaults? Back in '98 dad paid 75 bucks for my first car, a black 86 Renault Alliance 2 door 4 speed with the grille busted out and the hood latch broken lol. Citroën ZX Vocane is one of my lesser-known hothatch favourites. About 150 bhp and 1150 kg, and the design has held time very well compared to the earlier boxier Citroën's from the 1980's. There was also a diesel version, which some consider one of the first diesel hothatches.

Maybe you could make a part two and include the Fiat Tipo Sedicivalvole? No one seems to remember this car even though it was faster than the Golf mk2 GTI which was its rival at the time.
@zoufmalade
@zoufmalade 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe faster than the normal 8v GTi but with 200kg more it was certainly not faster than the GTi mk2 16v nor the g60
@markojanjic7341
@markojanjic7341 6 жыл бұрын
The g80 was obviously faster but the Tipo Sedicivalvole competed with the GTI mk2 16v and as far as I know it the Tipo had a better drag co-efficiency and therefore a bigger top speed. I don't know about the 0-60 time(The Golf might have beaten it there) but I also remember articles in magazines about the two and the Tipo beat the Golf in handling too since it was better in the corners.
@zoufmalade
@zoufmalade 6 жыл бұрын
Marko Janjic Well it was nothing exceptional, i mean you had a 0-60 time of about 8 to 9 seconds, and a weight figure around 1100kg. Although it was stable on long curves, it didn't do really great on twisty roads. That maybe the reason why i've never seen one on a rally stage (amateur or pro), whereas i've seen one or two gti mk2's. Heck, I've even seen a Uno turbo ie that as a chassis as precise as a shed

Hey Renault twingo RS. I'm owning one of this. It's a more modern Renault hot hatch : It's not incredibly powerful but it's so much fun to drive and the good thing is it was sold just 15000€. Very nice for low budget petrolheads

In Brazil we have the Fiat Marea, a sedan version of the Bravo. The Marea is no longer produced, but it is quite an infamous car here: powerful 5 cilinder engine with a turbocharged option - this one is known for it's "explosive" potential due to lack of user knowledge back in the production day combined to Fiat tech

Mini JCW is quite annoying, sadly. Backfire is programmed in the ECU unit and not "natural". You will always get the same 3 backfires when you let off the gas. Every. Single. Time. But Kudos to the Williams Clio. Although I would still prefer the Renault Sport Clio V6 . BTW: Wasn't the Fiat Bravo HGT Engine the same one as in the Fiat Coupé?

Interesting... Are the JCW and non-JCW models different? I don't know about the former but the latter seems to do whatever the hell it pleases (sometimes not even a pop, sometimes one or two of varying intensity, sometimes a blast of them). In all cases due to the thimble-sized exhaust they're not particularly loud anyway, most of the time. -_-

The Mini r53 Cooper S, JCW and JCW GP are not programmed to backfire. we've owned multiple of all of these cars and it was only in the R56 and other models with the turbo engine that have the popping ECU.

Worth mentioning is the Toyota Starlet (ep82) GT Turbo with 133bhp (using jdm fuel)/ later version Glanza V (ep91). Came with low/high boost switch, 0-60mph 8.1secs, intercooled and would beat most european/us hot hatches/sports cars. Fast little pocket rocket.

OK so it's not exactly a production model, but for my money the ultimate forgotten hot hatch is one I used to own... A 1989 civic base model (no power anything) with a ZC motor & tranny swap with a tune and magnaflow exhaust. Sounds mean for a 4 banger, and will pull a 5.0 Mustang out of the hole! Mine made in the neighborhood of 175hp (without the Turbo) and weighed about 1700 lbs soaking wet. It surprised more than a handful of hatches out there 😊

Hi, what about Peugeot 206 RC ? The hotter and sharper edition of GTI. I owned one couple of years ago and it was a lot of fun. 2 litre NA motor from 306 S16. From factory 180 Hp and very easy to tune. I ended on 230 Hp and still NA (without any boost). But it was too stiff on city roads... but on country roads, hell yeah ... a lot of fun.

I know its an older video, but still, I do have to shout out to the somewhat obscure (it seems) European Hot-Hatch we got here in the USA: 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit 2.5 liter 5 cylinder. Ok, no, it was not exactly fast, but it had torque everywhere and I think had more potential. I am sure the car was available else where in the world as such, and I am not sure how popular the setup is to be honest. I am not exactly a European car expert or fan despite having worked for a VW dealership as a mechanic for a short time. I am more of a old Japanese car/ old American car guy.

People still remember the Saxo Cup and the 106 GTI a bit (the same for the Civic VTI). I could even say the same for the Williams, but there are still a lot of projects with the 106 GTI / Saxo Cup. I would say however the 205 GTI is as much forgotten as the Williams and it is also considered one of the best hot hatches ever made. :)

i own a Saxo VTS 1.6 8v and it's awesome, even full stock you really don't need anything like coilovers etc... to have fun and scare yourself in it (lol). I live in France, wich is where they come from obviously... and where they are getting expensive now. The price for a good example is getting higher now (3500-5000€) and it's not over. A "future classic" becoming a classic

Pierre G. I'm French too, and yeah the prices are starting to go up but it's still relatively correct. For the performance and the experience that's a really fair price bracket imo. Hopefully it can stay like that so i can pick one up when i lose the young driver status.

The same is happening in Portugal for the Saxo Cup and 106 GTi as well as the Punto GT and the Clio 16S (1.8 16v). The Williams normally is "off the scale". Just too much expensive. (Seen them above the 10.000 €)
