Very helpful tips. I'm curious what your favorite medium is. That bee is amazing. I like it because it's realistic, but not to the point where it's like a photograph. Personally I prefer a more painterly look vs. ultra realistic.

This painting is absolutely stunning, I watched the real-time video over on patreon and found it so fascinating as I’ve never used oils before! One day I’d like to but I’m nervous about painting in the same room as my guinea pigs (aka my art studio / bedroom) - I know there are odourless solvents and such but I still worry about the safety with my piggies. One day though I will try them out, it’ll be a future treat for myself when I have the space!
@Lachri
@Lachri 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks!! I'm not sure how sensitive the piggies are so I can't offer advice there. I can say for my birds and frogs no one has had issues, but I wouldn't let a bird in the room while I've got wet paint in there that is for sure. You could also keep oils for painting outdoors when weather permits :D They make some pretty cool travel type set ups.

I really liked your video! I was wondering, if I wanted to make a painting that cracks with oil how long would it take and which type of oil medium do I use? I saw your video in which you made a painting with acrylics in which you made it crack by doing lean over fat and drying it with the Mr. Bean method! Do you work in oil pastels?

6:05 I can relate... The magentas, violets, blues look very similar in masstone straight out the tube. I get confused to which is which. Also when blending with titanium white, it overpowers the rest of the colours, and its harder to lay down darker colours on top of blended area that it done with White

Beautiful bee! Does Liquin yellow over time? When I painted in oils several years ago, we used Chroma Archival Lean Medium, and the whites eventually yellowed. I used Winsor and Newton Titanium white. Thinking about starting up again...
@Lachri
@Lachri 3 жыл бұрын
They say it is non yellowing. In 20 years of using it I've seen no yellowing at all. Someone commented recently claiming it did, but I don't know if there is any truth to that at all. So far there isn't in my experience and there were paintings years ago where I used the liquin as a top coat to even out the gloss (not advisable, just use a proper varnish). Nothing yellowed.

Thank you! I've always heard the biggest mistake beginner oil painters make is they don't put out enough paint on their palette. I put small amounts out, because I paint thinly and a little goes a long way! I also was told that blue shop towels are the only ones you can use with oils, but they are expensive.

Try the Viva, they are awesome! If you're painting in a more impressionistic style or with a palette knife where you have heavier brush strokes you will use more paint, but for my style, I don't need that much compared to how much I use in acrylics.

@@starvingartistscollective i resisted the allure of the oil paint aisle! Im not sure how but I ended up with yet another watercolour block in a long skinny shape (that i could totally have cut from a half or quarter sheet 😅) maybe once when we've bought a house and I have a dedicated studio space with more room instead of a combined office and studio.
@Morticia147
@Morticia147 3 жыл бұрын
Do you take any precautions when it comes to the fumes of Liquin and the paint thinner? I have to work in a normal room and yes, I can open a window (in January thats not fun at all) And therefore I don't know how to tackle oils. I tried it without fast drying mediums and it just took way to long for my taste. After a week I still left finger prints in the paint....
@Lachri
@Lachri 3 жыл бұрын
The only thing I do different is to keep the birds out of the room and leave the room door open to the rest of the house so the paint smells can air out. The scent itself I really like so it doesn't bother me at all. Usually the worst oil paint odors come from using turpentines or non odorless mineral spirits. The only ones I can go near are the Mona Lisa Odorless Paint Thinner or the Gamsol by Gamblin. The rest give me a near instant headache.
@loati94
@loati94 3 жыл бұрын
They might not work as fast as liquin, but there's products like gamblin's solvent free gel and solvent free fluid that make the paint dry faster and are safe to use. The gel works similar to liquin and the fluid I have yet to try but I've seen a lot of oil painters use it and looks pretty good. Then personal taste does the rest haha

How do you clean your brush after varnishing? I have ended up ruining so many brushes because of varnish :/
@Lachri

I clean them in Mona Lisa Odorless Paint Thinner just like I do my regular oil painting brushes, then I wash it with water and "the masters" (in the video description if you need the link) brush cleaner :) Treat the varnish just like you do cleaning regular brushes and you should be good :D
