I’ve come to this and similar KZbin channels as owner of Maschine mk3 (plus Jam) and an aging MacBook Pro. Getting a bit tired of waiting for the new M1x MBP so started looking at drum machines then MPC One. I have a Korg Wavestate and a Moog Subphatty to interested in sequencing, of which I have no experience.. Given that I am retired and spending a lot of time travelling in a motor home, the MPC Live2 is looking like the best fit. More then anything else, after 50 plus years playing guitar, 20 plus doing music on computer and 3 with Maschine mk3, I’m feeling more than ready for a paradime shift. Not ready for modular but a dedicated DAW in a box sounds about right. Plus I still get to keep my old mbp and mk3. Just got to say thanks for this channel. I appreciate Both sides. The “You don’t need new shit” and the “ You need new shit”. You know what they say, all things in moderation, including moderation.

I am a 4x Grammy Award winning producer in the genres of Hip Hop & R&B. I started off with FL Studio 3 in grammar school and at that time an Akai MPC 2000XL was my dream. I've gotten many placements with compositions done in FL Studio HOWEVER my drum sequences as often as possible come from my MPC. That analog vs digital debate I know gets a lot of fuel BUT here the MPC proves that there's some tricky voodoo in analog.

I just bought a new MPC One. Before I did, I enquired about the MPC software, firmware et al if I bought a used device. Akai told me that everything was included with a USED MPC. ?(I decided to buy new for the warranty and it was only $100 more.) I'm told that all of the above would NOT be so had I went with a Maschine +. (Sound like the Apple business model.) In order to afford the One, I traded three synthesizers BUT got SEVEN in the MPC. I've already punched out several of the most professional sounding songs on the One and I've been making music for over 50 years! I keep on discovering more depth and power in this beast and I honestly can't imagine making music without it! (P.S. Good video Bud)

Being direct, the MPC shits all over most of the competition. Seriously. It's leaps and bounds beyond in all the ways. Maybe someone doesn't sync with the workflow, or the touch screen, and fine... I wouldn't argue that. But compare it feature for feature to other things (like an Octatrack!) and it smokes them all.

Wellll... You cannot even compare the Electron sequencer with MPC. As great as the MPCs are, their sequencer is linear, pedestrian and plain boring. The LFOs are from 1994, envelopes can only increase the filter cut-off - no negative values, many parameters of FX cannot be automated... The do win the usability for sure, but ^^^

@LousyFacelift
@LousyFacelift 3 жыл бұрын
So much praise for the Octatrack for being so VERY powerful when in fact its only strength is its sound mangling capabilities, NOT as a sequencer... not even close to an MPC! It is an eight part monophonic concept with a very limited key range for samples, no velocity, no pressure sensitivity, limited to 64 steps per pattern and its audio converters are rather weak. They just recently introduced the possibility to assign the tempo to a pattern, which was only possible in arranger mode before or used as a global setting. Yes, it handles parameter locks in a very cool way but I don't feel this makes up for all the annoying limitations that no one seems to talk about... In the end these two concepts are not even comparable, I just do so in reaction to others, trying to make clear the Octatrack is NOT EVEN CLOSE to a standalone DAW, unlike the MPC.
@leftmono1016
@leftmono1016 3 жыл бұрын
LousyFacelift - 64 steps per track, but it takes a couple of seconds to increase to 128 by halving the resolution. Then use trig conditions to double or quadruple this. It's impossible to compare the two, you either love the Elektron sequencer or loath it. To me personally, the MPC sequencer is a recorder whereas the Elektron sequencer is an additional creative process. After getting used to the so called Electron workflow I couldn't use anything else. But of course it's a completely personal preference. You hit the nail on the head when you say the OT is nothing like a standalone DAW. Having used Cubase since the Atari days and almost everything in between I say thank christ for that!

This was the video that (re-)triggered my interest in the MPC One that made me buy it this week. @MichaalHell
@MichaalHell 3 жыл бұрын
PRO tip. Get a midi splitter and merger send both midi in and out from Digitone, digitakt to the MPC. Set up your digis to send knob cc data. Make a midi track on the MPC for each track of the digis. Hit record on the mpc, jam out on the digis. Congratulations you now have song mode for your digis with midi cc automation for every knob and note and mute data..
@sinewaymusic
@sinewaymusic 3 жыл бұрын
@@MichaalHell That's excellent advice! Personally, I think the MPC can already do 90% of what the Digitakt can do for me, so that machine still feels superfluous to me (and keeping all three is outside of my budget). But this is a great tip for automating stuff on the Digitone. I still wish that the Digitone could do that by itself, some sort of song mode in a form of a sequence of patterns along with knob and mute automations layered on top of it, but maybe I'm having unrealistic expectations. 😊

It’s the heart of my studio and the starting place for almost every experimental jam or music making session. The last update 2.8 was game changing for me and saved me from needing to buy a seperate drum machine because of the drum synth plugin. The latest update completely took me by surprise and I’m so happy they have integrated better use of the Audio recording and sequencing features (outside of normal sampling and chopping of course). Can’t wait to dig in and hook up my interface and see how far I can take a track from start to finish using nothing but the device itself.

The timing on the MPC when slaved is really really bad. That's my argument for not needing one and why I returned mine. And yes, I used a sync box with it. I am a Maschine User for 6 years now, but I still didnt switch to an MK3 so far. Still had my old MK2. But after a lot of Searching for a standalone option I decided to go with the MPC One. But it died on me after just 3 weeks (this was just last week) =( I was disappointed, since I had quite a good time until that point. But I have to confess.. the Maschine world feels a bit more "coherent" to me. inside the MPC software everything feels so isolated from another, arranging of a complex track took me way longer and making quick pattern changes was a mess in comparison to the Maschine Software. SO after getting my money back for the broken one, I reinvested it into the Maschine+ and the device is just sensationally good. The build quality, the setup of all things and I was surprised that I didnt even missed the touchscreen as much as I expected. coming from the MK2 model, the Maschine+ is just flat out amazing upgrade (maybe I'd feel different coming from a mk3). The MPC Update sounds very very good tho. I love the competition of the brands, hope they will strive for more greatness.

So my MPC One arrived the day after the firmware update 2.10, it came out the box and I was straight online to see how to update it. I'm blown away by the device, I mean to all intents and purposes, the MPC One is a studio in a box, as you rightly said, you could take it on a long train journey or a flight and write an album from start to finish. The workflow is absolutely fantastic, the controls are beautifully tactile, and the layout perfectly logical. I've had it just under a week now, and I've already got items listed on eBay to buy an MPC X for the studio, whereupon I think I might simply remove the PC completely. The MPC One was definitely the DAW-in-a-box(and-more) that I was looking for - so thank you TMS, this and a couple of your other videos really steered me this way! Thank you!

I’ve been on maschine since the MK1 back in early 2010. I own 3 maschines & just purchased an MPC4000. Long story short, maschine wanted to be akai & ran with the computerized MPC idea before akai ever thought about it. If akai had taken the leap earlier, they would still be hailed as King. My take on it is that Maschine had the head start to advance on the computerized MPC, they’re playing catch up to native instruments. I still don’t doubt Akai’s sound though, it is what inspired a lot of us home beatmakers when we heard all the crazy beats they were making during the 90s. Peace & love to all

The simple fact that their latest MPC's are capable to function both with or without a computer was a thoughtful decision giving the user a choice of deployment and feel. You do not need to turn on or plug into a computer... with the Live/Live II you don't even need to be near a wall socket. Even though it is obvious that laptops/DAW's is where it's at today I still find certain tools outside-the-box are useful and, for some, essential. Whether people had a X or Live since 2017 up to a person with a Live II or One last year are pretty much in 7th heaven right now... solid updates.

The killer argument for buying the MPC is that since I've owned it, I feel less of an urge to buy more synths, because it's helping me get so much more out of the synths I already own, and it's making the process of getting everything synced up, and talking to each other, mixed, processed, and recorded so much easier, because all of that is just right there a couple of screentaps away in one dedicated unit. The workflow now is often literally: get inspired, turn on the MPC, start making music, and sort out everything I need as I go. MIDI and audio routing, FX, mixing, organising my projects for later recall and performance, I just do it all on the fly. The only format I could get working like that before I had the MPC was using a PC and a DAW. Resulting in a clear break between studiobased productions made using DAW and PC, and jam/live based stuff done on hardware, trying to find a balance between living in the moment and just recording to a stereomix, and saving presets in those cases where it would be hard to replicate later if necessary. The MPC has integrated those 2 workflows together into a single continuous process from rough sketchy jamming/experimenting, to finished project.

Honestly I have a hardcore Maschine background from the start of my journey with the Maschine Mikro MK2 and then I upgraded to the Maschine Mikro MK3 but it wasn't until I met the workflow of the Mikro MK3 that I truly appreciated what Maschine has too offer us, and it was with the help of Sanjay C's tutorials that I quickly became obbsesed and locked in to the ability and functionality of the Maschine for a hardware controller. Also Komplete 13 standard edition is damn near lit AF! that's just a fact of life which I love to be honest with you. But I picked up a MPC Touch and found that I more quickly caught on to the workflow with the MPC Touch and I have been focusing on DAW-LESS of recent with me picking up a habit of trying to work outside the DAW. I have laybuyed the MPC ONE RETRO, personally I would have went with the MPC LIVE II or even the Maschine+ but I am talking a whole different league where those things are in the price of the OP-1 by teenage engineering. Great work as always though mate keep it up lots of love and support from AUSTRALIA!

Plus you have a touch screen that lets you physically edit your audio. No one else provides all of this in a stand-alone that is completely battery powered. And here is my final reason why MPC destroys everything else. MPC is owned by InMusic Brands. NI cannot compete because of what inmusic brands owns. If you don’t know who inmusic brands is. Look them up and you will understand. Be blessed. Oh did I forget to mention that the Live, Live II and the MPC One all have awesome batteries, WiFi and Bluetooth.

+1, I'd love to see an Elektron vs MPC video. As a new user of the Digitakt and Digitone combo, I'm looking at the new 2.10 update and starting to think I may have been right from the very beginning - I started the "perfect groovebox" search back in January and had almost made up my mind to get the MPC One. While I find the Elektron combo to be super fun to jam with, I end up with a lot of patterns and no simple way of turning them into a final song. I think I'd be ready to sacrifice some of the performance fun of the Elektron machines in favor of getting closer to the finish line in the creative process. From two to just one single box greatly simplifies the setup (from a pair of line cables, a midi cable and two power cables down to just a single power cable), allowing me to more easily move around the house with the box (typically to a room where the kids aren't 😂). The ability to export a song idea to a wav file greatly simplifies the process of sharing a work in progress with my friends (the Digitakt/Digitone forces me to record it live into the DAW or a field recorder). Finally, the ability to explode tracks and bounce to wav is a killer feature for the final mixing and editing in the DAW (with Elektron, this can be done with Overbridge, but you have to perform perfectly or do lots of takes - on the MPC, you can record all automation curves and play then back or bounce them to stems). All in all, I'm leaning towards the MPC after all!

@@sinewaymusic I've been down that road of groove box / song creation...and probably always will be. Where I am at now is using software instruments with a midi controller and a DAW. I resisted software instruments but have really been enjoying Arturia's Pigments and their V Collection. It meets my needs for lots of quality sounds, ease of transport and recording / arranging for a song. I've tried a pile of hardware instruments, eurorack, grooveboxes and the problem I face is ease to capture an idea and develop the idea into a song. I have to capture the sounds someway and I have to arrange the sounds somehow. In the early stages of an idea or song, its best for me to capture and manipulate right away. And if/when a song part needs a hardware instrument, then I can capture it on the daw. Last, I've avoided the MPCs, Machine + and Octa because its not enjoyable to arrange layers into a song.

@@blindianajones Yeah, I guess we are all on our own unique journey. 😊 I've made music in a DAW for the past 2-3 years but I've found it much more inspirational to explore sounds and loops when getting absorbed with all the sound parameter settings and knobs of the Digitone (as an example). There's no doubt that software/VSTs will be the most versatile and cost-effective way to produce music so if you are happy with that kind of setup, all the power to you. You can compare it with meditation: some people are disciplined enough that they can meditate with open eyes in the middle of a hectic subway ride, while others need a calm environment, closed eyes and some soothing music. To me, I find that hardware makes the music making experience more immersive, plus it opens up more opportunities for me to jam out (somehow I resist opening up my laptop on a Saturday morning because I immediately get reminded of work). All of this is just to say that I'm still determined to get some hardware in my studio. 😂 But I feel I need something that gets me more to like 0-80% of the song creation process rather than just 0-25%, which is where I'm at with the Digitone/Digitakt combo. It's lots of creative fun, but it's like trying to write a book without an outline.

This update is excellent. I have a Live 2 retro and this makes working in standalone just that much better. I also use it in controller mode on the PC since it came with a ton of other free AIR instruments plugins for the desktop version of MPC 2 software but I am so glad we have these new ones in standalone. The synths they added sound great and are super versatile. As far as standalone drum machines/samplers go I think it's MPC for the win. I am glad AKAI is listening to their customers and adding many features we wanted. I have also been wanting to get a Native instruments keyboard and the Komplete control software because they do have an amazing amount of virtual instruments that would go along great with the MPC workflow. Splice even has virtual instrument patches you can download for NI's software which is really cool.

My two biggest issues coming from Maschine to MPC - the previous lack of “instant chromatic pad mode” and the seeming inability to assign “whatever you want” to any pad, within any group, regardless of “program type” - did they fix the latter? I was always floored at how difficult it was to use all 16 pads on multiple groups with the MPC, vs the Maschine workflow - tap a pad, browse/sample/etc… and now that pad is whatever you want… move to the next pad? Whatever you want? done! Any luck there?

Really like your vids, but what was it now that put the MPC above the Maschine+? Most things you mentioned that are new to the MPC were in the M+ already right? Just curious why MPC owners are always trying to bash the M+.
@LousyFacelift
@LousyFacelift 3 жыл бұрын
I'll try my best not to bash the M+ too much (like I may have done before) BUT... I think most of it has to do with the price. For the price of the M+ I think you should be able to expect so many things it doesn't have, most importantly a battery (but also a touchscreen and more i/os...) Without a battery I don't see a real advantage of the the M+ over a Maschine controller. A controller that's connected to a laptop running on battery can be picked up and carried to another room without the need to turn everything off and is a lot cheaper. So with the M+ you get a standalone device but you lose portability and processing power at a much higher price, I think that's the most important point in all the crticism.
@basgoossen
@basgoossen 3 жыл бұрын
@@LousyFacelift i can follow along with your thinking here. I use my maschine+ often on a €25,- powerbank which is able to power it for over 12 hours. It whould be nice if that had been built in indeed. On the other hand i'm actually glad it doesn't have a touchscreen, with the Maschine workflow you really hardly ever need it, you don't even need to look at the device 99% of the time. The MPC Live II is the first of the MPC's to come with a battery (and is the same price as the M+). However from a hardware perspective withe the MPC you get half the RAM, half the buttons and encoders (probably why a touchscreen is needed), and the device is 1kg heavier so imho less portable (ram is more expensive than a battery btw, so the price argument?). I don't have anything against either device, the thing i'm seeing though is that there is many bashing mainly from the MPC community, and this does have impact. The community around the M+ is new and young and needs to grow and i would like to see it get a chance. That would also benefit MPC users. The M+ has endless options when it comes to extendability and things like Reactor and Kontakt plugins, but they need the community to create them. And of course a controller with build in laptop (like the MPC and M+) is more expensive than a controller without. I don't see any difference here in price point between the two. Except the cheaper onboarding option MPC has in the form of the ONE. But hey Akai is producing their devices for a community that is already 10 times bigger. I'd cheer at the effort NI is putting in, having created a worthy compattitor with depending on your liking also a big list of pro's over the MPC. And already you see Akai also needs to step up, benefitting all.

@@basgoossen I agree competition is beneficial for all of us. Native Instruments have built a good reputation around their products and I don't mean to argue on the quality of their plug ins. Someone who is familiar and happy with them will surely prefer the Maschine. But when looking at another type of customer, someone who is looking for a more "open" DAW concept that comes with more i/o connections, with better options for controlling and recording external sources like the autosampler and the XY controller for effects, I think the MPC is clearly the better option for less money. I see the MPC more like a hardware DAW, the Maschine+ more like a powerful groovebox. A battery was already included in the Live MK l btw. Of course you can use a powerbank for the M+ but that also means less of a difference to a controller with a laptop. The touchscreen on the MPC is awesome imho, it's very responsive and speeds up the workflow where it makes sense and for all the other applications you still have the buttons and knobs. I understand the scepticism I also often felt that "I hate touchscreens...!" for example when trying to withdraw money from a horrible ATM but these things need to be experienced and evaluated individually.
@basgoossen
@basgoossen 3 жыл бұрын
@@LousyFacelift it's funny you mention the DAW groovebox comparison, i've used it before but in the other way around. The MPC has imho many limitations when used as a DAW that the M+ has not. The "extra IO" on the MPC boils down to 4 CV/Gate ports, which i actually whould not use in the studio since most of my gear is USB capable. If it comes to DAW functions like arranging, recording anything other than samples (vocals, accoustics) the M+ really stands out. Also controlling external synths is actually not a hassle at all on the M+ as midi settings are available on every "sound" (pad per group). The M+ does not limit the user to things like 4 layers per sound or 4 effects.per sound/group but instead gives you unlimited options like a DAW. The M+ has been the centerpiece of my studio now for quite a while, connecting over 8 external devices over both USB and MIDI. But hey we're probably not gonna consolidate on this, and everybody can have its own opinion.
@LousyFacelift
@LousyFacelift 3 жыл бұрын
@@basgoossen It's not just the CVs, only when comparing to the One which is half the price of the M+... But does it matter? No. And you're right with agreeing to disagree on this. Back then reasoning was that it had audio interface support, linear arrangement vs seq chaining, disk streaming audio for long samples and much better plugins. Its cool to see they bring all this stuff but people have been asking stuff like disk streaming in current mpc line, having ssd options and all. Mainly to not fill the ram too quick for live sets or what not. I dont know, i wouldnt get one now, perhaps a better ipad. It has all the features, better touch screen and can watch youtube with it. Its great drum machine too, hooking it with a usb to model cycles to get the sound to mixer. Mpc workflow building tracks, kind of made it feel like inferior daw.

I've been buying MPC units since 1991, still have my 60ii, 2000xl and ASQ-10, - never felt the need for anymore until I started using Logic in 2015, yeah that was my first dive into DAWs, but having got lost in the endless options available ITB, - this year I've been working completely OTB, - only using the MacBook for dragging WAV and MIDI onto a thumb drive for use in my new MPC. So, in January I finally decided to dip my toe in the water, with regards to the new MPC devices, so I started with the ONE, - and now, I rarely turn my other units on at all and, although I'm still considering the X, I feel I might wait and see what the next MPC looks like, because it was only the limited outs that made me yearn for the X, and the LIVE is unnecessary for someone like me, as I don't require the battery or speakers... For anyone into breakbeats, I honestly feel the new MPC units are the best standalone option, one can slice a sample, manually edit points, create program and extract midi sequence data within 5 minutes, or less. Hopefully Akai will follow up the ONE with something like a ONE-XL, inc - full sized pads - sloping, but fixed screen like 60ii or 2000, I personally don't like my screens movable, - but that's just me. - few more control butons - more dedicated ins and outs, - so i don't need to buy another device just to expand outputs, although that is a nice update. CONS currently - I'm not a big fan of the AIR plugins, the new instruments are usable, but having quite a few hardware alternatives, including vintage, I don't use them personally. Also the AIR effects for me, aren't as good as Akai's own, - again that's just personal taste, but having used outboard fx and processors since 1986, and still owning a lot, I really don't feel the AIR effects are worthy of the current MPC units... I would have much prefered some AIRWINDOWS saturation and drive plugins myself. - No disrespect to the clever people at AIR, I personally just don't find them very inspiring effects. - can you tell I've got mild autism...

Great video. I have both the MPC Live II and M+. I like them both especially with their latest firmware updates, but I notice the workflow on the MPC is not there yet. So much homework to do before actually starting making a beat on the MPC. I mean : create/name seq, create/name track, create/name program, select type, add assets to the projects... On the M+ you just load groups and go. Also strange performance workflow as you need to go through different screens to get arpegios/scales or FX. Akai should have an optional alt workflow that creates the seq/track/program in a snap. You can use templates but then you spend time getting rid of what you don't need in them. I hope Akai will now focus on that in next firmware, it's quite frustrating they stuck with the same type of song structure for 30 years, adding features has made this paradigm quite complicated.

As much as I absolutely love and will defend to the death my mpc live I have to admit the workflow was excruciatingly painful to learn as someone who was new to the mpc world. However in my personal experience once you get some muscle memory going it’s pretty cruisy to live jam/make beats on.

@@JUNO-69 i believe they aren’t that far before removing lots of workflow frustration. Two main areas : 1. As an alternative to the track and program creation, bring a « browse to track » button that would combine 5 actions : track creation, track type selection, plugin selection and naming of both track and program (same name). Of course you should still be able to do it the old way, especially if you want to share programs between tracks/sequences. 2. Let the multi/scales/arp pad performance modes and fx mode work on the selected track wherever you are in the UI and allow quick active track/target selection through the pads. Ideally it would be cool to have the sequences inside tracks rather than the opposite but I guess that would need some bug revamp not every legacy user wants to see. Though I’m sure even legacy users are still annoyed even if used to with the current workflow. Just those two improvements could bring it way closer to Maschine’s workflow convenience. As Maschine is basing its song tracks creation on the browse to group action and its performance workflow on the currently active group.

@@steventaylor3789 I don’t know the Akai Force very much but from what I’ve seen the workflow still is like a computer daw more or less. Akai definitely needs to have specific workflow for the hardware, not trying to mimic computer daw behavior otherwise, I mean people will prefer working directly on the laptop. As for the MPC, the update is really bringing a lot of power, it’s great to see that Akai can compete on the built-in plugins Vs NI. For me they now really need to focus on making MPC and Force users day to day life better by enhancing if not rethinking completely the workflow. Akai looks to be a company that listens to its users, so I believe they’re already on it for maybe what will actually called the V3.0 update 😉

Got both the + and the MPC Live. Prefer the workflow on Maschine but the MPC is much better with my external hardware and lets me use my own sample folders without any 2 folder restriction. Ableton, though, with my Push 2 blows both away. Did the Dawless stuff for the past year and decided to go back to Ableton with a hybrid setup. So much better. I do like sitting on the couch though with the Maschine and the MPC.

Mpc has become the center of my music making process. So much gear became redundant and thankfully sold off once the mpc hardware and software entered the equation, so much value imo

With the addition of a Mellotron VST the MPC One is a third the price of the M4000D Mini. The MPC One is a steal for that alone.

As luck will have it. I came out of a 3 dayz studio sesh mixing writing, arranging one song. 3 dayz of mpc. In that’ night when I turn off my mpc and pick up the phone. The update appeared out of nowhere. The update I been thinking about since before the mpc one even exited. Since mpc1000 been trying to work it that way and finally is here tracking out to a digital mixer. :)

I just got my first MPC and a week later 2.10 came out - very lucky. Being able to go back to retrieve any melody is great, but Squid has implemented that in a super claver way, where the last 16 bars of noodling are available on the 16 pads - yum! One thing I find annoying about the MPC is how easy it goes into the crunchy "red". I feel like I'm spending lots of time fiddling with levels as the clipping is harsh and nasty - something that never happened to me on the Octatrack... different DAC, different design?

I have modular and a couple of drum machines. I don’t like computers/software so feel I need something like this but there is so much choice, I don’t really understand these boxes and their capabilities and so watch KZbin videos but they’re not helping as they all assume prior knowledge! Any suggestions as to idiots guides to , erm, whatever these things are generically known as ?

I completely understand. In essence, the MPC is something like a DAW and a midi controller all in one box. It can sequence external gear through midi, it has it’s own internal synths and can chop and mangle audio samples as well. It has a looper but I don’t use it much for that. With the new features, it’s really a centerpiece for music production as well as controlling external gear. Hope that helps in any way! Cheers!

@@MidlifeSynthesist So I would still need an audio interface and computer if I wanted to record my work? Sorry if this question sounds stupid!
