Open the lid, get a length of parchment paper and do it to fit the bottom and the top plate as one piece then put bread and filling in, no mess at all on the plates or in between the toastie maker 😉

I used to have a sandwich toaster like that, but I never liked the way British sliced bread doesn't fit. These toasters must be designed for continental breads, which have smaller slices. So now I use a double-sided clamshell style grill which has a much larger cooking area. And British slices work a treat. One way you could maybe improve results with the Prolex toaster is to trim the bread slices to fit prior to toasting. But then you have the crusts/edges left over and I don't like wasting anything with the cost of food being what it is.

I had one of those toasted sandwich makers. Ended up giving it to a charity shop. Only used the thing once and found out more trouble than it was worth. £8 was cheap though. Mine cost more than that. Push the bread down into the bottom plates and only fill in the well parts to avoid overflow and burning where it cuts it in the middle. Tuck the top slice of bread under the back then close to make a better seal there which helps stop the leaking there. Works for me. Bargain price that
@stevev3664

Use a toasted sandwich to make a template. Buy some ham slices that are in a flat plastic tray container that supermarkets sell. Take out the ham. Place the sandwich on the empty plastic tray that the ham was in. Using a sharp craft knife carefully cut the tray around the sandwich to make the template. Wash the template. Then eat the sandwich. Then place the template on the bread and carefully cut the bread around the template to cut the bread to size before putting it in the machine. Then there is no excess bread to hinder the closing and latching. Otherwise there is a danger of breaking the latch. After use the template can be washed and reused. Make some toasted ham sandwiches. Enjoy! 😎
