Once, I smashed a potion of feather fall and it covered everyone except Wyll, I toggled on turn-based mode and then jumped, planning to have Wyll swig a potion of feather fall on his turn. Apparently, the cutscene canceled the turn-based mode and I saw three characters land safely at the bottom and Wyll just kinda splats. I like Wyll, but I laughed so hard when this happened.

Volo doesn't talk about afterlife, he's just being poetic about the fact he's dead. With Speak With Dead, the target only knows what it knew in life - and you're technically not talking to the soul, only the memories that remain.

In “Wilds Beyond the Witchlight” campaign, I played a wholesome bugbear named “Mouse”who was raised by a halfling and protected everyone who was smaller than he. Agreed. Speak to dead is amazing. The dead don't lie and combined with disguise you can find a lot of hidden dialogue. Some of their answers are heartbreaking and some are just disturbing. Like how many cultists are still brainwashed after death, hinting at the main conflict of the story.
@Lernos1Ай бұрын
According to D&D: "The corpse knows only what it knew in life... This spell doesn’t return the creature’s soul to its body, only its animating spirit. Thus, the corpse can’t learn new information, doesn’t comprehend anything that has happened since it died, and can’t speculate about future events." So asking a corpse about the afterlife is pointless with this spell. It's unable to know. I guess you could learn how they felt up to the very moment of death, but not a millisecond later.
@dyslexicLLMАй бұрын
@@Lernos1 Interesting, but irrelevant. Death should break the spell of mindcontrol, which in the case of the absolute it doesn't. Withers has a whole monologue about it, because it's part of the main plot.

@agirlnamedmichael1670Ай бұрын
@@dyslexicLLM I believe it does. Just because a corpse says it was doing something for the Absolute doesn't mean the mind control wasn't broken. "Serving the Absolute" is a neutral statement of fact. The people we can hire via Withers were clearly not in agreement with the Absolute and their minds were freed once they died. =)
@dyslexicLLMАй бұрын
@@agirlnamedmichael1670 Yes, your quote is neutral. Does that reflect all 'speak to dead' dialogue? No. Npcs who were killed in an instant have shown to change their mind after death; "Nothing matters anymore...", while others answer questions about their current state aka dead. Fact that they refuse to talk to their killer even when they never saw them and then can be fooled by a disguise proves they learn after death. If these were 'recordings' of the soul they wouldn't do any of these things. Remember BG3 took some liberty with the D&D rulebook. These are not 100% the same.

RE: "My mother's son". I'm not sure how true it is in the Forgotten Realms, but in real European history, and in much else of the world, people would usually call themselves by their father's name. I.e. Simon, son of Joseph, Halfdan Ragnarsson, etc. Using the name of your mother, or calling her out first, would often imply you either don't know who your father is, or you don't particularly care about the person they were. Which could be a source of great shame in those times, or it could be turned around, like being the son of a known criminal and proclaiming yourself "your mother's son", trying to imply you did not follow in your father's footsteps. And IIRC, Volo did have some daddy issues.
@kylevanderwolf4446Ай бұрын
In patronomic cultures if your mother was exceptional your name could reflect that as well , actually.

I constantly forget that not everybody plays drow constantly like I do, so seeing the Under Elf convo be treated like a "not many players know this" was a disappointing surprise. In the early game, you also have a bunch of other unique interactions as a drow: *Aaron's greeting is slightly different, adding "and now even a drow!" *If Zevlor wasn't knocked out after his argument with Aradin, he mentions that it's brave of you not to hide your heritage and promises to let everyone else know you helped at the gate. *Aradin's conversation in the grove can also be different (if he didn't leave, I know this happens specifically if you defused tensions with him and Zevlor), where he'll remark "Well if it ain't the friendly drow!" and just be an ass about things. You can remark that people like him less than they like you, and even tell him to "feck off." *When you speak to Sazza, she assumes Minthara sent you to come collect her. *Mattis' greeting is a little different upon meeting you, where he's a little wary but curious, asking if the stories are true that drow drag kids away. *Volo is surprised to see you, since drow aren't often seen outside the Underdark. *A few of the druids sound more suspicious towards you too, namely the druid that tells you you can't enter the grove and Nettie. *Kalga takes the fact that a drow is here in her grove as a sign. "Who better to understand a watchful brood mother than a beloved child of Lolth?" If you're a seladrine drow, you can tell her you have no love for the Queen of Spiders. TL;DR if you wanted a lot of race specific dialogue, drow and tiefling are your best bets.

That's literally the entrance to the Underdark I always use because I like to hurl myself down there as soon as I'm done dealing with Khaga to go pick up better items and level myself a bit before heading to Ethel and the gobs... Because I sneak around a lot I've always heard those convos from the people in the crypt. I spoke with the dead to Volo in an early playthrough when I didn't think about the fact that he was strapped to a mountain of smokepowder with a trail of fire creeping towards it 😬. Didn't matter much since I wasn't playing as Durge anyway and it was balanced so his knowledge of the slayer buff or his endgame buff weren't really necessary. I do like the idea of jumping into the blighted village to try to be sneaky just to immediately be caught anyway. I wouldn't exactly call that recruiting Halsin. It's like adding Jaheira to your party for the siege on Moonrise. A nice meat shield and extra set of hands but oh man if you let them die you can't rez them.

idk how a normal drow gameplay count as a "secret discovery" tbh, or that feather fall can save you when jumping into the hole, or cursed reactions when in reality they happen in every playthrough, the stuff with bandits i personally hear every playthrough too since i am choosing to shoot the stone basically killing 2 and then starting fight, bugbear part also didnt show anything aside from goblin mentioning him..., about Volo - others already said its a corpse so what he can know are only the things up to his death point - still it was mildly interesting to hear it, about Halsin - honestly not surprising that there are no reactions, after all many things are scripted. all that being said, out of those 8 SECRET DISCOVERIES, there are maybe 1-2 things at most at least for me. I mean talk with Volo corpse and mention of the bugbear by the goblin, sorry but the rest are either obvious, or are happening in every playthrough

It's not really an early recruitment so much as breaking the game a bit.
