Also Dr. Mark's, I am happy to report that I have finally reached out to my doctor and gotten help for my depression. I knew I needed the help but had a hard time understanding it and wondering if I should bother trying medication for it. I am already being treated for the anxiety but could still feel the effects of the depression. Watching your videos helped me understand things better and gave me the confidence to reach out for help. I'm feeling positive about the coming year because if I continue to do well I will be able to accomplish much!! Thanks!

I’m almost 55 and have thought this way my whole life. I learned it from my mom. She took anything and turned it into the worst possible thing. Like she would have panic attacks when I was a child or gas and say she was dying and where to find her bank book. Now I do this. If my child is sick = cancer or if my husband is late coming home= he’s cheating. I hate living this way. I had a therapist tell me it’s anxious thoughts but that’s it. I don’t think I can ever stop thinking this way. I hate being like this. Now with menopause I have panic attacks over my catastrophe thoughts.

Dr.Marks, you’re the best! I drew a labeled diagram of the 8 Cognitive Distortions and hung it in my room so that I’m more cognizant of these negative thought patterns! For example, if I’m feeling symptoms of panic from agoraphobia, I’ll know it’s simply that the “catastrophizing” and “overgeneralization” distortions are in play. Being more aware of what’s happening in my brain really allows me to feel more in control. Thank you and I look forward to your next video!

I am so glad that you mentioned that “emotions are not facts.” I have such issue with the idea that all feelings are valid. People have a tendency to project so much of their trauma unto the facts of a situation and then react to that trauma instead of the objective reality. Then, they are enabled by society by being told that their feelings are “valid.” I really think that is one of the main issues with the world today.
@birdtopaz5627
@birdtopaz5627 3 жыл бұрын
Emotions are always valid insofar as 1) they have the right to exist and 2) they are frequently intuitive clues to things in the outside world that your conscious mind does not have immediate access to, i.e. an inexplicale rise of heart-pounding fear at high noon as you're walking into a convenenience store for some reason--and you are NOT prone to panic attacks! I have had sudden intuitions like that about people, places, and things, and ***believe me,*** they are lifesavers! My biggest mistakes in life were not listening to my intuitions signaled by emotions. Emotions are NOT, however, valid as facts. An emotion, at best, should be considered a tipoff that "something's great," "something's up," or "something's wrong"--a motivating springboard for investigating or observing a person, place, thing, or self! It can NEVER take the place of hard, logical, fact-based decisionmaking, EVER. I have also discovered that these "functional emotions," i.e. intuitions, are generally subtle and low-key, unless it's signalizing threats. They can be hard to pay attention to, as they're frequently subtle, except in extreme cases involving immediate survival--such as the convenience store example I provided earlier. A highly emotional, traumatized person in fact (I think) generally can't take advantage of the subtle but real signaling that the intuitive emotions can give. Ever notice how the highly traumatized act dingy, always stepping into bad situations? IMHO, that's why.

I can relate to all of these...that illustration is literally my head. I find it really hard to stay positive & keep my thoughts from drifting out of proportion. I often worry about something for weeks on end and become depressed over what ifs and regrets...but the reality is none of it's effecting my life at present. But I keep it alive by thinking about it.

Practicing mindfulness ( _on the present moment;_ there's a lot of mindfulenesses out there. It's a fad now.) helped me a lot. It's a practice of being aware of your thoughts, that you're highly-identified with them, letting them be more real than they are (too definitive of the moment than the moment would justify; living in the past or future). It starts with practicing a guided meditation (1st video in my playlist is what worked for me. It's not my video. I'm sure there's others out there that are good). Over time, you become familiar with "me in the moment" and "me thinking in the moment." You develop an observer of the thinker, and that becomes more familiar, easier to "get there" anytime, not just formal meditation. I think of it as: you've practiced explaining your experience, identifying with thoughts as they emerge from the subconcious, running with them as if they're real (without considering the possibility they're not, or not related to this moment). You've practiced that for years/decades. You've got nothing to compare it to. It's natural to run with whatever thoughts are in your head at the moment (not even consider that you're not your thoughts; there's a you that transcends that). So, it takes practice to develop a different habit. But, it really works. It might take 3-9 months of practice, but you'll see that you can "get there" (the observer) anytime (walking, working, shopping). It takes time to know the difference "this is me" and "this is me thinking." It's really powerful and liberating to know you're not your inner narration. But, it takes time to familiarize with something that's gone unused (because the narration gives us a sense of control of our experience). You can't recognize good or bad control until you can step back and observe it as "there's me in the moment" and "me thinking, narrating, confabulating in the moment" (the default mode until you develop a different, more present & aware mode).

Oh wow!!! I just love Dr. Mark’s Videos. They are straight to the point, and easy to understand. The way she delivers her message is phenomenal and inspiring... I wish I can study medicine and help people like she does... she has a gift of knowledge and communication. Very few people has this sort gift. What really inspires me about her how despite being blessed those gifts she seems to be a very down to earth and humble lady...Usuall I have experienced many physicians to be very pompous and arrogant when they consult their patients... at the same time My Doctor is very much like her...

Over generalization, emotional reasoning, mind reading. I always assume what people think based off of how they act towards me. I am a highly sensitive person so maybe that has something to do with it. I think it may also have to do with a lot of PTSD from past relationships of someone lying, or being deceitful so I try to catch it before it happens. Looking forward to the next video and how to address them! Thank you Dr. Tracey

I consider prejudice to be an example of wrongly trusting your gut.

I have bipolar disorder and Complex PTSD and I’m finally at a point in my life where I can listen, and absorb information clearly for the first time really and so I want to get to work on myself. I take my meds religiously but I would also like to master mindfulness! My negative and repeating thoughts are the worst part of my illness. My mind tells me everyday that I’m kidding myself into believing I’m a good person basically. I am a pretty darn good person and I need to work on this. You mentioned worksheets we could print out and I can’t seem to find where to do so. So if you could direct me to those it would be awesome! I wish I could find a therapist like you. Thanks!!

Filtering: ying-yang principle, no bad thought without a good one.. B/W Thinking: picking the extremes and coloring the in-between in steps.. Overgeneralization: actively training the "world knowledge" or trivial knowledge.. Mind reading: socialising about the topic itself.. Emotional reasoning: close time focus with respects to mood-elevating, self-caring rituals.. should statements: conversion to wanted statements, expressing wishes only.. Catastrophising: something so challenging, that it needs all attention to keep up.. personalization: socialing with respects to the life story listening parts..

And sometimes you have to do all at once and it becomes a program.. like.. writing down the thoughts for later, listening to cute and happy music, playing a certain game for the challenge part, expressing the wishes, learning about this topic.. And finally.. i'm able to cook something delicious.

Filtering and catastrophizing are the two that I commonly struggle with. Our therapist for couples counseling last year gave me a lot of help in dealing with catastrophizing.

Waiting eagerly for the next video!!!! I had a few of them but they went away after I talked to a friend. Some things happen for the best. We don't realise them sometimes. Like doc said facts remain the same but we have to view them from some other prism. Keep up the good work. Thank you.

Good morning doctor Tracy! I think I needed to hear this because I am facing a problem at this time. Several years ago I was on a plane that almost went down. It didn't, but I was so traumatized that I will never get on a plane again! I've suffered with panic attacks all my life and in fact have been on medicine for them all my life. It was hard for me to get on the plane and when that happened, it was very terrifying! Okay oh, so this is my problem. 2 months ago I had to go to a dentist 2 get a new set of dentures. I've had my top dentures for 15 years but my bottom teeth on my own. When I went into the clinic the waiting room was very nice and very comfortable, however when I had to go bat to where they do all the dental work I was led down a hallway that was the shape of a maze which unnerved me and I was noticing a lot of stainless steel which I associate with a plane. It seemed we were walking for an hour until we got to this little room which literally look like a tiny cockpit of an airplane and I began to tremble but I managed to get through the process of the dentist taking impressions of the top of my mouth for the new dentures. I thought that would be all and then I would go back and get my new dentures, however it didn't turn out so well so the doctor tells me to come back the following week. Long story short---
