WHY IS HIP STRENGTH IMPORTANT?
Much of the knee, hip, and back pain that I treat as a physical therapist can be attributed to one thing - HIP WEAKNESS.
You see - your hips need to be very mobile, but they also need to be very strong.
Because weakness in the hips doesn’t always manifest itself as pain in the hips. In fact, in the majority of cases it will come across first as KNEE PAIN and LOWER BACK PAIN.
You see - your hips are what control the mechanical motion at your knees and back. They need to be very strong so that your knees can function properly and your back can be supported/stabilized through movement.
WHAT ARE THE BEST EXERCISES TO STRENGTHEN MY HIPS?
The best exercise to increase hip strength are compound motions that are easily progressed with weights. Squats, deadlifts, hip thrusts, and lunges are the best exercises for this purpose.
But what do you do if your legs are too weak for these motions? Or if hip or knee pain is limiting your ability to perform these compound exercises?
Never fear! I’ve got your back (err… hips I guess!)!
In this video I wanted to share with you 8 of the BEST exercises to strengthen your hips at home. You can do these anytime, anywhere, with very little equipment required!
I’ll present them to you today in 2 routines… one for beginners and one for those who are more intermediate.
The beginner routine is completely equipment-free while the intermediate routine requires some resistance bands (links to resistance bands are included above).

Not going to lie. Just got back from the gym, leg day, lots of volume. Lot of sets and rep variations doing barbell squats, leg press, and leg extensions. But through all that, my right hip been feeling funny. While making breakfast, I hop onto YT and first vid I see is this. Felt like “Divine intervention” 😂😂😂😂

Found your video as to whether hips are weak or tight. I have been trying to stretch my hips for years and now just have discovered how actually weak they are. I can hardly do the strengthening exercises as they are so weak. I am really hoping after awhile of doing the strengthening exercises my pain when walking uphill or even walking at times will decrease Thank you for your videos

So glad I found this. I just started having pain in my hips when I walk. Are there exercises like this (beginner) without lying down? I do find when I walk if I just stop briefly, the pain is relieved. It does come back eventually. Thank you!

I have definite differences in range of motion between my hips. My left hip is very mobile. My right not so much. Oddly my left hip/glutes give me grief. Would these help? Or another video. I have minimal OA and the pain is actually on the side and in the deep glute area.

Thanks so much for your all your exercises - I've been following your ones for knees. I'm not sure about the hip adduction exercise ( at 7.06 on your video - isn't this just going to stretch the muscles on the side of your hips. I have been told to prevent bursitis you should avoid side stretching - soif you sleep on your side you should avoid allowing your upper leg to cross over the lower leg- sleeping with a pillow helps to avoid this. Or am I doing something wrong!

I experience pain while doing heavy squats (>60kgs), not matter how much hip external rotation widening of legs I do... but I proceed anyways and the pain goes away after two reps. Do you think I'm damaging my hips further..?

sir i have very hard ankle sprain 8 months ago, after 15 days it starts swelling,and during this i can't use full foot because of pain, so I used only heel full 1month after 1 month my knee,hip starts paining so I consulted ortho but in xray of knee, ankle it show nothing so I used braces knee cap for 1month then after 4 months my ankle sprain pain complete gone but my knee,hip not so I then I consulted neurology doctor they advised to do ls spine mri, so in mri there mild herniated l5s1 but report say it's normal then I used advise tablet for 2 months but my knee pain is so painfully back hip pain is mild

Every other day would be a great starting point, but you can probably work up to everyday pretty quickly. Your hips are big, strong muscles and where we're not using any weights or much resistance with these they're safer to do more regularly. Hope that helps and good luck with your recovery!

What about eventually adding weight to your thighs, like ankle weight, to make clamshells harder? Is it a good idea?

Knock knee is linked to weakness in the hip musculature and for most people with genu valgum, exercise can help realign and stabilize their knees

Friendly suggestion: your content is awesome and the picture quality is great, but your audio frankly... sucks. Please invest in an external mic and stop relying on the tinny or boomy sounding on-board camera mic. That would take you to a whole other level. Most video content creators don't realize this, but audio quality is actually more important than video quality.

It's something I think about every single video, Mike. Look closely - I'm actually wearing a lavalier microphone. I have acoustic panels on all my walls. I have blankets covering every large piece of equipment in my gym and on the floor. I've dubbed the audio it in post. If you have ANY other suggestions that would help me, I'm all ears.

It's certainly not cured in a day! It requires consistency, time, and patience. Also - I always recommend you go get it looked at by a local professional who can make recommendation for your specific needs. Good luck!

sir i have very hard ankle sprain 8 months ago, after 15 days it starts swelling,and during this i can't use full foot because of pain, so I used only heel full 1month after 1 month my knee,hip starts paining so I consulted ortho but in xray of knee, ankle it show nothing so I used braces knee cap for 1month then after 4 months my ankle sprain pain complete gone but my knee,hip not so I then I consulted neurology doctor they advised to do ls spine mri, so in mri there mild herniated l5s1 but report say it's normal then I used advise tablet for 2 months but my knee pain is so painfully back hip pain is mild
