The Cuphead one doesn’t actually happen- yes, Studio MDHR *did* make the creepy tune, but it’s only accessible through digging through the files. So it isn’t an anti-piracy measure, just a regular easter egg for people who look through files.

Fun fact: if you get the bad ending in Cuphead, returning to the title screen would give you the anti-piracy theme. However, unlike with pirated copies, this would not be permanent.

Fun fact about the Ooga Booga anti-piracy measure from the developers: "...we actually created a unintended piracy deterrent when we added that “piracy detected!” screen. Smarter hackers later found our boot file logic and after showing the dancing pirate screen (for bragging rights), would let the game continue on to the title screen. Turns out, we unintentionally never freed the memory used by the dancing pirate and with so little memory on that system, the heap became over-allocated soon after during gameplay. Our code was as written as fault tolerant as possible so you could typically get into a match and start playing and everything would appear normal. After a few minutes, graphics would start glitching out, framerate would start to hitch, and the experience would degrade often time until it was totally unplayable."

Auto accelrate Bad engine damage Can't store Silver Blista in Clean Getaway After kill Vlad, the game softlock Can't take Stevie's comet LC Bank locked after robbery Bernie's meter in Hating The Haters, are messed up Can't use PC and Police Computer, thus some missions using this feature are unwinnable. And, final mission objective (dish serve cold) are not triggered.

If we are talking about extra anti-piracy measures, then Serious Sam 3: BFE has a few more. tcrf.net/Serious_Sam_3:_BFE#Anti-Piracy One level will force your character to have their view locked skyward and they will start walking in circles. The Ending will crash on a pirated copy.

The most hilarious anti piracy that failed successfully Serious sam 3 Everyone knows how pirated versions of the game will have a scorpion monster chase you across the entire game. You cant kill it. You cant despawn it with console commands. You cant so anything about it What the devs didnt expect though, is that players would not only accept the challenge of beating the game while chased by an overpowered monster, they would dedicate an entire speedrun category to it (serious sam pirate%)

If you pirated the original Donkey Kong, the game will crash after 4 seconds. This is caused due to the game doing a copyright check every time a barrel is destroyed, and since Donkey Kong always throws the first barrel downwards to ignite the oil can at the bottom, this causes the crash to happen.

Serious Sam 3 has other interesting things in store as anti piracy measures if you get past that part in the game. I found out the hard way when instead of the game closing when my brother disabled family share, by playing another game in his library, SS3 will keep running, but will trigger anti piracy measures. I have no idea if this has been patched out in the several years since I experienced it. But the stage will refuse to load, and another blue unkillable monster will be spawned in. I went on the steam forum and posted some screen shots of what I thought was a glitch... Then about an hour later I found out my brother had just played another game and family share got disabled mid way through the 2nd area. The devs said I had to be a master hacker screw up to bypass the first anti cheat but miss the other obvious code to bypass. Later once I found out the reason they at first didn't belive me, but later got back to me after testing it out themselves. (Lol) they apologized by giving me a free SS3 wallpaper. I haven't played the game since. Because I didn't want to get my save data corrupted by family share bugs.

I have never seen that blue enemy, tho there is also another mesure : during level 5, the camera will get stuck looking upward and spinning very fast, making the level pretty much impossible to complete. Tho console commands are not disabled so you can always skip to other levels.

I think Batman: Arkham Asylum had a pretty good anti-piracy system. Everything ran fine, aside from the fact that gliding was disabled. Players went to the developer's forum, thinking it was a glitch, only to be called out for their piracy by the staff.

It's probably because the measures were removed. No one actually activated the measures because the copies emulate Steam, which is the game's method of checking for piracy. The only person who has recorded the measures had to hack an older version of the game and force it to not recognize the Steam account they were using. The measures and the related files were removed in an update. Edit Jan 6 2021: also it's featured in an earlier video.

It isn't 100% the same as what you wrote, but Spyro 3: Year of the Dragon has something like that. I'm not sure if it's like that now, but pirated copies of the game would make the game a lot harder, eggs that go towards your total would go missing, levels would change etc., but when getting to the main boss you'd be allowed to play for about 10 seconds before the loading screen shows up and you end up back in the first home world with all your progress wiped. Pretty rough!

My favorite example is from Game Dev Tycoon. The developers Greenheart Games themselves brought a modified version without DRM into circulation on torrent sites. In that version your in-game development company would go bankrupt because people kept pirating your games and you wouldn't make any money.

Here's an interesting thing. Universe Sandbox 2 doesn't have an anti-piracy measure. If the game detects it's been pirated, it just shows a message basically saying "Hey, you pirated our game. That's fine, but we'd really appreciate it if you bought it" then lets you play the game normally.

I own a copy of _Maniac Mansion_ on the "Classic Collection" Adventure CD-ROM. The massive, steel security door always puzzled me because it was always open, and aside from selecting it, I couldn't interact with the door or the keypad in any way. I only later found out about the self-destruct sequence much later on. Funny enough, the same thing happens during several game over events, like draining the pool without refilling it or turning all power to the house off.

To all of the people saying that there’s no scenario in which pirating is ok, just consider this for a minute. Imagine you played a game as a kid (which you paid for) and really enjoyed it. Now, 15 years later, you decide to play that game again. You try to find your original copy of the game and the console that you played it on for ages and you can’t find either, so you decide to just purchase it again somewhere else. After an hour of searching, you find out that it isn’t being sold on any platform. You try for another hour to find anywhere selling the game legitimately, but you find nothing. Suddenly, you find a website that allows you to pirate the game. Is it morally wrong, in this scenario, to pirate a game which has most likely been unavailable for purchase for over a decade or should you just give up wanting to relive a game that you loved as a kid simply because nobody is selling it? I agree that people pirating a product that they could just as easily buy is bad, but sometimes pirating a game is legitimately the only option that is given.

As a person who lives in a country with crippling economy and many other problems, playing pirated games are the reason why I haven't gone insane, I completely understand why devs hate pirated copies of their games and I'm not saying they should collab on making them easier to pirate. Something similar to the Gungeon anti-piracy is the Nitrox launcher used to play Subnautica in a fanmade multiplayer mode. When you add a pirated game directory, it just gives you a link to the You Are a Pirate video. It's pretty great.

depends, those in the video try to at least do some minor annoyance to pirates. Also if you pirate the game just to try the thing, but you bought it, there is no problem. The thing is, pirates will pirate, if you can't pirate it they just won't play it. At least that is my experience, I probably buy many games for a pirate (hell, half the games I played are bought) usually I pirate games before buying them, if they are good and worth the money, and aren't just another uber expensive AAA game just like the other 20 you've already seen, then I buy them. (also I don't buy games from companies I don't support, like bethesda, because yeah, skyrim is fun, but only when you mod it, the game itself is too bland)

Heh, fun move on the gungeon mods. Similar thing happened with mods on Satisfactory, albeit not in the game. The community's mod manager tool used the EGS launcher to find the game, and couldn't find the pirated version. On their discord, they had an announcement in the FAQ to the effect of "If you're having difficulty installing mods on a cracked version of the game, ping @Moderator for help." Said help was, of course, a swift banhammer strike.

There's a very cool Anti-Piracy method in a lesser known survival-horror game called "Forgotten Memories: Alternate Realities". Pirated versions of the game contain a very nasty exclusive surprise: an invincible minster that will relentlessly pursue the player throughout the entirety of the game. It can appear anywhere and anytime, even in places where enemies don't usually spawn, like in save rooms and even DURING cutscenes. To top it off, it can teleport across long distances , and with its absurd hitbox, escaping it is almost impossible. The best part is, pirates who are not well-informed about the game will think that this is a feature; they will often complain about how broken is, unwittingly calling themselves out as the stealers that they are. Mad genius! This monster is custom-made specifically for the purpose of trolling people who steal their game. It's got it's own model, sounds, the works -- and none of this shows up in the legitimate copies! Something tells me that the devs must really hate pirates with a passion to do something like this. @@dominikspieler5308 Most people who pirate a game won't buy it even if they are told to do so as long as there is way to bypass the piracy prevention. In almost all of these the patches probably took week or two to come out from the time the piracy prevention was noticed. Or in the older ones you can just search up from the google what was in the manual. Preventing piracy is almost completely pointless anyways since everything gets cracked. Only the normal end users suffer from the semi effective DRM's like denuvo while people who pirate it will just need to wait for little longer. Some developers publish their games in GOG which is basically saying that anyone is free to download this game and share it as much as they can.

Great video! But the Earthbound one that you mentioned at #4 (before talking about the Mr. Gimmick one) is actually a little worse than you said. It also generates significantly more enemy sprites than you would normally run into, to the point of being extremely annoying, extremely difficult to beat, and making the game lag. Then it lets you fight half of the final boss fight (which is pretty difficult and lengthy) before it crashes and deletes your save file.

Idk if anyone knows about this but Spyro Year of the Dragon (PS1) has one of the best anti piracy measure too! - first, the fairy will inform you that the game you play is pirated - you can continue playing it normally until world 2 - in world 3, your dragonfly can't be upgraded into the golden one (stays green). This basically makes the game harder. - in world 4, everytime your dragonfly eats a butterfly, it will disappear. This makes the game even harder to play. - in the last boss battle, if you still play the pirated copy, the game will crash and forces you to go to World 1. All of your saved files will be deleted.
